25.01.2022 Jenna Lee is a mixed race Larrakia, Wardaman and Karajarri, Asian (Japanese, Chinese, Filipino) and Anglo Australian woman whose contemporary art practice explores the transformation of the colonial printed word. Lee’s work incorporates sculpture, installation, weaving, moving image, photography and projection. For the exhibition, I AM HERE, Lee has created a collection of objects which explore the transformation of the printed word through the ritualistic acts of destruc...tion and reconstruction. The artist states While simultaneously being dispossessed from our land and waters, and having children stolen, our words were served up with no connection to people or place in the form of ‘Aboriginal’ word-list dictionaries. In these works Lee recontextualises these dictionaries breaking them down to their raw materials and reforming them in a reclamation of the agency and authority over the listing of words. Presented in the form of coolamons and dilly bags the works offer a translation of a self-determined language of cultural importance. The full catalogue for I AM HERE is available via the link in our bio. 1. ‘Paper Bark Coolamon’, pages of ‘Aboriginal Words and Place Names’, bookbinding thread and varnish, 14 x 25 x 15 cm 2. 24.01.2022 Arthouse Gallery is thrilled to present 'Flowing Fragrance: Dwelling in the Green Mountains' from acclaimed Australian artist Dean Home. These fine contemporary still life paintings sit confidently in the Baroque and Renaissance traditions of still life genre. The expertly painted ephemeral peonies, counterpoised against ancient ceramic vessels remind us, as the genre should, of the fleeting nature of life. Importantly, Homes luscious paintings prompt us to spend time whi...le we may, embracing poetry, nature, music, art, and life. The exhibition launches tomorrow and continues until the 26th of September. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday so you are more than welcome to stop by and see the show. Stay tuned for our video walkthrough tomorrow. Dean Home, 'Mountains and wind reach out to the petals' (detail), oil on board, 128 x 206 cm (framed) #arttoyou #deanhome See more

23.01.2022 This is an artist who pays homage through detail. Limitless nature is reflected by infinite reply. To reach this point, his surfaces gain depth through a gradual accretion of marks. Dragging lines forward and then peeling them back, staining and then erasing with the drill tip: each painting becomes a palimpsest for the sky, the water and the earth. 23.01.2022 Arthouse Gallery is thrilled to present 'Providence' from acclaimed Australian artist Joshua Yeldham. These are elaborate offerings. The ornamentation on their surface works like a map to a place you already inhabit. And the time the artist takes to paint, draw, carve, sculpt and glaze each piece is rewarded by the time it deserves to know them: To interlock with the vibrational hum between positive and negative space or just stare at a feather. When you are close to the...se works you want to lay your hands upon their furrows and perhaps even lean in, just the same way we place our body on the skin of a forest elder. To touch and to listen. To behold and be held. The exhibition has launched and continues until the 21st of November. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday so you are more than welcome to stop by and see the show. There are a limited number of tickets to our opening celebration with the artist tomorrow (Saturday 7th) available via the link in our bio. Bookings are essential. 21.01.2022 The tragic story of Australian Hospital Ship Centaur, sunk on 14 May 1943, inspired a series of charcoal drawings by celebrated artist Dean Bowen. The beautiful, thought-provoking work underscores the horror of the violation while commemorating the 268 innocent souls lost, and the 64 brave individuals who survived. Dean Bowen has recently been featured on the cover of The Spectrum in The Age. The story profiles Dean's contributions to the exhibition Imagining Centaur at ...The Shrine of Remembrance. Alongside photographs and memorabilia, the exhibition includes many of Bowens works and an animated centrepiece built around earlier drawings responding to the sinking of the Australian Hospital Ship. 16.01.2022 Dean Home, along with his wife Aileen, had the great good fortune (during the halcyon pre-Covid months of 2019) to revisit their favourite European cathedrals and galleries in Rome. The artist recalled that while enjoying Roma with biscotti in hand he stumbled upon flower markets outside the Mercato Trionfale. He was instantly overwhelmed by the sheer quantity, colour and fragrance of magnificent peonies banked in barrows and buckets. Unable to resist their allure he gather...ed arms full of the luminous blooms knowing they would be central to a shift in his work. Home purchased as many as he could physically hold and carried them awkwardly and somewhat self-consciously onto the metro and back to his apartment. 15.01.2022 Ellen Koshland uses a variety of mediums in her practice including photography, screen printing, paint and text. For the exhibition, I AM HERE, Koshland has included a work exploring language. Cultivate is a word appearing in many contexts: cultivate the soil, cultivate respect, to be cultivated, or to be un-cultivated implying sophistication or ignorance. In Australia un-cultivated has particular resonance. White colonists saw the land as uncultivated and used this as a re...ason to deny first nation people the right to country. Yet time has shown how damaging many white European methods of cultivating are tree clearing, hard hooved animal importation, fossil fuel mining and how much, instead, can be learned from indigenous understanding of land and eco management. 06.01.2022 Flowing Fragrance: Dwelling in the Green Mountains continues to reference the artists honest and enduring regard of chinoiserie, but much has altered. While the glazed oriental bowls remain, they are fewer in number and each is critical to the composition of the paintings. Several are adorned by landscapes. These are stylistically removed from Homes previous landscape imagery. Looking closely at the trees, for example, one can detect a certain new stylistic form that is d...arker and more risky than before. The treatment of the background has also evolved. The admixture of sensitively applied washes of brown provides a burnish that adds mystery to the images. The conscious freeing up of the background from distinct subject matter creates critical negative space in the paintings. This, in turn, increases the dimensionality of the peonies and vessels providing prolonged meditative moments for the viewer. These are quieter works, just as the artist intended. 05.01.2022 Developing her ideas through the act of painting, Marlee McMahon creates abstractions that have a likeness to graphic signage or architectural features, both visual qualities that are seen in urban environments. McMahon considers a parallel between the practice of painting and the act of walking. She recognises both as a slowed-down and repetitive act, whereby taking a long walk, or layering a painted surface allows a space for contemplation. 04.01.2022 While peonies have become native to Europe and North America they have their origin in China and are an official emblem of that country. Peonies embody in both Asian and European cultures the essence of romance and happiness. Home has a life-long admiration of the classic techniques of Rembrandt, Vermeer, da Vinci, and Caravaggio. His is no idle observation, indeed we see in Homes work the same impeccable skills of chiaroscuro undertaken by the old masters of Renaissance a...nd Baroque art. 03.01.2022 Some of the more monochrome pieces in this series feature expanses of contemplative space. White and black are used in a deeply meditative almost minimal way. But many more are full to bursting. Brimming with an ambition to expand on a kinetic path of germination. As a counterpoint to all the minutae, massive owls and curving rivers calm the eye. They also help us to anchor somewhere in the rushing tide of lines. Because Yeldham does paint, draw and sculpt in a torrent. Yeldham's 'Providence' continues until Saturday 21 November. 02.01.2022 Arthouse Gallery is delighted to announce that we are now representing Australian artist Nicola Moss. Probing the intersection of politics and ecology Nicola Moss' collaged works highlight the importance of green spaces amid congested urban environments. Relying on an archive of papers coloured using paint, graphite, printmaking and various stains, Moss' materials travel with her as she explores the physical landscape. Impressions from tree bark frottage rubbings, for ex...ample, become collaged elements of her compositions. Framing nature as a source rather than a resource the artist highlights how intrinsic sustainable green spaces are to our well-being, both physical and mental. Nicola Moss has exhibited throughout Australia, Japan, Sweden and the USA since beginning her professional practice in 2006. Moss was awarded the Moreton Bay Region Art Award (2012) and in 2019 was selected to participate in the artist in residence program at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venice. She has been a finalist in numerous awards including the John Leslie Art Prize (2020), Fishers Ghost Art Award (2019), the STILL: National Still Life Award (2019) and the Sunshine Coast Art Prize (2018, 2017, 2014). Her work is held in many important collections including that of the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Moreton Bay Region Art Collection and the Social Securities Appeals Tribunal, Brisbane. Arthouse Gallery is thrilled to be showcasing Nicola Moss' work in her debut solo exhibition with Arthouse Gallery in 2021.
