23.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE: Arthritis Australia, in partnership with the Australian Rheumatology Association, has launched a new online rheumatoid arthritis patient-support website. The free MyRA website (www.myra.org.au) provides individually tailored information designed to help people seize control and become active participants in their journey with the disease.... More than 450,000 Australians live with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease that causes pain and swelling of the joints. The disease can strike at any age, including during childhood, and can greatly impact on a persons wellbeing. However, with early diagnosis and the right treatment, most people with rheumatoid arthritis can lead full and active lives. Everyone's journey with rheumatoid arthritis is different. Some people are at the starting point, while others have been living with arthritis for decades, says Andrew Mills, CEO of Arthritis Australia. Prior to this program, we found many people were either using doctor google to make important decisions based on incorrect, irrelevant or alarming information, joining online forums without independent and trusted moderation, or joining programs that may only be suitable at a particular point in time due to the medication they are using. Responding to what people living with rheumatoid arthritis were telling us, Arthritis Australia embarked on the journey to develop a gold standard patient-support website that could meet each person where they are at on their journey, providing them with relevant, tailored, evidence-based information regardless of what drug they are currently on or how long they have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, continued Mr Mills. The MyRA website was developed in collaboration with state and territory-based arthritis organisations, informed also by respected international arthritis peers. The end result is a digital platform that provides a holistic patient-support system. It covers topics such as symptoms, risks, treatment options, diet, exercise, day to day tips, support services and how to manage pain, mental health and fatigue. It looks at how to build good relationships with healthcare teams and provides updates about COVID-19. The website also links through to the National Arthritis Infoline. A fantastic feature is the way the online patient-support website then links people with arthritis organisations nationwide and relevant local information, educational events, fitness activities, webinars and other support services, including trained health educators, continued Mr Mills... 23.01.2022 Our radio as campaign is well underway, and many of you have asked what it is all about. While we have 6 variations, here is the transcript of one with our Consumer Director, Wendy Favorito: "My name is Wendy. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis when I was 6.... People think I am too young to have arthritis, but RA affects people of all ages. My condition causes a lot of pain, swelling and stiffness in my joints. It can be really exhausting. Whilst there is no cure, it is possible to live well with arthritis. For your free arthritis kit, call the National Arthritis Info Line on 1800 011 041 or Google Arthritis Australia'."
23.01.2022 In a new editorial in Australian Prescriber, Associate Professor Phillip Robinson and Dr Evan Bursle from the University of Queensland advise people with autoimmune diseases to keep taking their medicines as prescribed, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. A healthy immune system helps protect the body from infections including viruses like coronavirus, says Associate Professor Robinson. However, for people with autoimmune diseases, the bodys own immune system attacks itsel...f which is why immunosuppressants are used in treatment. From what we know from currently available studies, people taking immunosuppressants are no more likely than the general population to be hospitalised for COVID-19, to need oxygen in hospital, or to die from the infection."

20.01.2022 June is Scleroderma Awareness Month! Scleroderma (meaning hard skin) affects the connective tissues of the body (tissues that hold together joints, muscles, blood vessels and internal organs). The connective tissues of people with scleroderma have too much of a protein called collagen. Collagen is important to give connective tissue its strength, but excess collagen causes hardening and tightening of the affected area. ... Many different areas of the body can be affected, such as the lungs, heart, kidneys, oesophagus, gastrointestinal tract There are two major types of scleroderma: Localised scleroderma (sometimes called morphea). This form of scleroderma affects only the skin and sometimes the tissues beneath it (for example, muscle). Systemic sclerosis. This form affects the connective tissue throughout the body, including blood vessels, joints, the digestive system (oesophagus, stomach and bowel), and occasionally the lungs, heart, kidneys and muscles. 20.01.2022 Bust the misconception! "Its a common assumption that exercise in older people is difficult and dangerous, so its perhaps best avoided. But this is often not the case even if these ideas are ingrained in society. Research has repeatedly shown that exercise in older adults is linked with lower disease risk, reduced risk of falls, and better overall health. https://theconversation.com/ability-not-age-should-be-the-o

19.01.2022 You may have heard the new reports about dexamethasone, a medicine being tested in the UK for COVID-19 treatment in acute hospital care. Dexamethasone belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids and is used to treat a range of conditions related to inflammation. Most commonly, it is used in acute severe conditions and cancer (e.g. brain cancers) but also severe allergies, some types of nausea and vomiting, severe arthritis, swelling of the brain and spinal cord, ...severe asthma and more. We are monitoring this issue closely. In Australia, dexamethasone is rarely used for rheumatological conditions. The trial evidence suggests it is only beneficial for COVID-19 patients who are experiencing respiratory distress and who are under the supervision of hospital staff. 14.01.2022 Muscle weakness and wasting is very common in arthritis, as a result of pain and difficulty moving. It is common to feel very fatigued and have less stamina. These factors can also contribute to lower levels of activity, poor balance and loss of independence. Research has shown that people with arthritis can safely participate in strength training and can prevent, and even reverse, muscle weakness. Regular strength training, under the supervision of a qualified health or exer...cise professional, is recommended as part of an exercise program for people with arthritis. Strength training can increase the strength, endurance and size of muscles. This can help to: support joints and reduce the amount of strain/stress improve posture improve mobility and balance improve bone density increase your stamina, meaning you can do more without getting as tired lose weight (as you gain more muscle your body burns more calories, even at rest) improve your sense of wellbeing, confidence and mood.
