11.01.2022 Installation of Kazakh yurt Etymology and synonyms The word yurt is originally from a Turkish word that refers to the imprint left in the earth by the yurt tha...t was moved from one place to another, but also means homeland. In Russian, the structure is called "юрта-yurta" from which the word arrived in English. The word Kazakh used for yurt is киз й-kïiz üy and means felted house. In Mongolia it’s called гэр-ger (home). The term kyrgyz is боз й-boz üy which means "gray house", due to the color of the felt. In Turkmen the term is both ak öý and gara öý, literally "white house" and "black house", depending on its luxury and elegance. From Baskyrs it’s called tirmä. Ög in Tuva. The Afghans call them "Kherga" / "Jirga". In Pakistan it is also known as gher. In Hindi, it is called ghar which means home. The Persian yurt is called xeyme in the Tajik names are yurta, xona-i siyoh, xayma. See more
