07.01.2022 The story of Guulaangga Green Tree Frog The traditional Aboriginal style of dot painting depicts the travels of our ancestors surrounding the Green Tree Frogs. This beautiful painting has been embedded with 9 stunning genuine Yowah Queensland boulder opals and includes Grace Brown’s hand print on the back. The painting with its genuine Queensland boulder opal is one of Grace Browns identifying symbols of her paintings. The story of painting of Green Tree Frogs in the opal f...ields of Yowah Queensland, is about how the beautiful frogs eggs survive the dry and arid climate. Green Tree Frogs possess its green colour to make it easier to camouflage in bushes and leaves from their predators. The suction-pads on the toes provide stability on the rocks and also in the water. These Green Tree Frogs adapt to their environment easily. They hide in tree holes, under bark, in rotten logs, under leaves and under tree roots when inactive. At night, they search for insects in trees, where they can climb vertically or move horizontally with specially adapted toe pads. During the mating season, the males call from slightly elevated positions close to the still-water sources in which they choose to breed. Clumps of between 200 and 2000 eggs are laid which initially float, but sink within 24 hours. The development of the tadpoles takes about six weeks, after which they undergo metamorphosis and leave the water as juvenile frogs. The frogs journey of life, reminds Grace of her own journey to find her heritage and how her ancestors tried to hide the fact that they were all aboriginal. Grace’s great grandmother was from the stolen generation and had to hide her past and her heritage, just like the frogs eggs in this artwork. Her grandmother later taught Grace to appreciate all creatures great and small, and to protect their place in the natural environment, including her country and her aboriginal heritage. The gorgeous opals in this painting signify real gems amongst the fake ones. Her grandmother was one of the real beautiful gems. 06.01.2022 MICHAEL NELSON JAGAMARA Born: 1946 Pikilyi (Vaughn Springs) NT Language: Warlpiri & Luritja Region: Papunya, Western Desert NT... Michael Nelson began painting some 35 years ago in Papunya, Central Australia, in the classic dot and circle tradition of desert sand painting. Much of his work focuses on stories and imagery from the Mt Singleton area near Yuendumu, and tells of traditional Dreaming stories including Possum, Kangaroo, Emu and Lightning. Michael Nelson was acknowledged nationally and internationally in the mid 1980s through numerous public art commissions including the Sydney Opera House mural, Forecourt Mosaic Design for The New Parliament House in Canberra; and significant art awards including the 1984 Telstra National Aboriginal Art Award. During the late 1990s, he reinvented his approach to painting with a more expressionistic style. Jagamara continues to make the salient point that although his choice of colours, materials and appearance of works are continually being reformatted, his stories have never changed. Michael Nelson’s significant contribution to Aboriginal Art was recognised in 2008, when he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of New South Wales. His works are held in numerous private, corporate and most public collections in Australia including the National Gallery of Australia and the Nationally Museum of Australia; and both Public and Private International collections.
