22.01.2022 To celebrate Brain Awareness Week 2021 here at BBB, we set ourselves a challenge how could learning music help us with everyday tasks. Today’s focus is on how... music learning helps us learn how to read. Many in our BBB community would have had exposure to the concepts and mechanisms connected to music learning and language learning. The most significant understanding from the research is that music and language processing share an overlapping neural network. This means that the brain pathways that process musical sounds and language sounds are very closely connected and, in some cases, the same. This means that our brains understand language as if it was music when we are babies. It also means that when babies are learning how to separate language sounds, they are primarily identifying the different rhythms and melodies of each word or language sound. As children grow, they use their music processing networks to identify tiny changes in language sounds which helps them identify the prosody, or underlying meaning, in speech. In addition, children then come to recognise syntactic rules (which is the order the musical notes or words need to go in to convey a specific meaning) in both musical melodies using expectation and prediction to understand which note should come next melody or which word should come next in a sentence. When it comes to music learning and reading, researchers have identified how the phonological loop, otherwise known as the symbol to sound system, is exactly the same when we read music as when we read words. In a nutshell, our eyes see a symbol (a note or a letter), our brains immediately play an internal audio recording of the sound that they have connected to that symbol, our brains then tell our body how to make that sound (through an instrument or speaking), the sound we make goes straight back into our ears and we check with our brain recording if that sounded right. If it did, our brains say tick! and we do it again, and if it didn’t, we try again to produce the right sound. Music reading and language reading are incredibly similar processes inside our brains, and the more we do both, the broader and faster our sound processing networks can work and grow. Celebrate Brain Awareness Week with us!

09.01.2022 You know a theatre show is going to be great when it begins with a rush of powerful music followed with words uttered long ago by the great Martin Luther King. The Year 11 and 12 drama students were treated to a live One Man Show titled I’Rhetoric, an intense tale of a young political journalist as he navigates the temptations and sabotage of the political trail whilst also fighting his own internal demons. There were moments of laughter as boys were asked to engage on stage physically and through laying bare on the stage their own values, attitudes and beliefs. Thank you to Mashed Theatre for bringing this show to our students.

05.01.2022 A poignant play with a very real story. The Year 10 and 11 drama boys were treated to a live theatre show written by David Burton based on the true story of Toowoomba teenager Kristjan, who passed due to illicit drug use. As an audience we were taken on a stark and confronting journey of love, loss, sadness and touching humour. The performance was expertly delivered by the actors of Grin & Tonic Theatre Company. A perfect example of verbatim theatre, allowing the senior boys to immerse themselves in their current theatre style. A meaningful message delivered to our Men of Saints.
