22.01.2022 Artist Wallpapers - www.michaelreid.com.au - the practice of unique artist wallpapers has as its panoramic roots, the voyages of exploration and travel one finds in the 18th century. Captain James Cook first sailed from England to the South Seas in 1769 and his adventures captured the imaginations of many Europeans at a time. In 1806 Joseph Dufour et Cie, in collaboration with the designer Jean-Gabriel Charvet, produced a twenty-panel set of scenic wallpaper entitled Sauvage...s de la Mer du Pacifique. The wallpaper was printed in colour from multiple woodblocks. The technology of today allows talented contemporary artists, drawing on this 18th century tradition, to explore large scale images & room panoramas hung with commissioned wallpaper. Wallpaper as well as fabric panelling cocoons a space and has wonderful acoustic qualities. Wallpaper can be playful or powerful, subtle and flexible. If you have the imagination, collaborating with a significant contemporary artist to execute and produce an important work of original wall art may be of great interest. With artist wallpapers, you can after all, walk through and around your art. illustrated: images from the opening night of the National Gallery of Victorias survey exhibition, Petrina Hicks: Bleached Gothic, October 2019, NGV Federation Square, Melbourne - photographer Tom Ross, and tagging @NGVMelbourne.#michaelreidsydney #artistwallpaper #petrinahicks

20.01.2022 Even more incredible shots of The 2020 Tree which has blossomed this week at THE QVB in Sydney. "This project is a celebration of the mundane, the mediocre and the low brow. It responds to 2020s barrage of unwanted gifts by making something magical from our collective mess. Of course, if you want to make magic at the moment youve got to be nimble, resourceful and work with your surrounds, which is all too often of late our own homes.... In this project, unassuming icons of the Australian suburban landscape are woken from their monotony. Everyday objects are distorted, twisted and warped, playfully modifying the all too familiar to create sculptures and ornaments that glisten, shimmer and shine. This spectacle of a tree upends tradition - if we really are living in unprecedented times then we need symbols absurd enough to live up to that." - @ger.wyn @theqvb photos with thanks to @terencechinphotography #gerwyndavies #qvb #queenvictoriabuilding #chasclarkson #christmas2020 #the2020tree #qvbchristmastree #australianartist #moveover2020 #michaelreidberlin #michaelreidsydney

17.01.2022 Michael Reid Object, coming soon Schulim Krimper (1893-1971) Furniture Designer... Schulim Krimper bucked the post-war trend for mass-produced furniture. He created custom-made pieces, fashioned so that light caught their surfaces and edges to reveal the grain and colour of his favoured Australian, New Guinean and African woods. Krimpers intricately designed work together with his self-belief in his artistry- with beret, smock, monocle and atelier-style workshop to emphasize the point raised the status of furniture-making to an art form. Object Object will be a curated spotlight on the diverse collecting and decorating fields of antiques, furniture and design. The pieces presented in Object have been selected by the newly minted creative triumvirate of David Cook, art consultant, gallerist and former specialist of Christies Australia; Michael Reid, art gallery director and past specialist with Christies in London & Australia; and a third partner, a tastemaker with a deep passion for, and knowledge of, the decorative arts. The identity of our third partner, will be announced shortly. Object presents an opportunity for those who are interested in the applied arts, furniture and design to experience and acquire unusual, beautiful, significant and practical pieces for their homes. Object is populated with inherently interesting & valuable decorative artworks which have stood the test of time. Objects that bear the marks and carry the patina of many lives. Objects with a story to tell that will become part of your history. Art is within each object, of itself. Items presented on Object are not mass-produced and flat-packed they are not replicated into the homes of millions. Object is about finding the individual, the important and the timeless. www.michaelreidobject.com.au

15.01.2022 CATHERINE NELSON talks us through some of the environments she selected to shoot her new body of work Future Memories 2020, on view now at Michael Reid Sydney. Open Wednesday to Saturday from 11am. "Most of the new works were shot in Costa Rica and the others in Greenland. the Azores and Australia. I began collaborating with a climate change foundation made up of UN climate change lawyers, activists and biologists. Most members of the group are Costa Rican and when trying t...o create a work for their foundation, I realised I had no jungle material to work with so I decided to go there. It wasnt a hard decision to make! Landing in Costa Rica was like stepping into an eternal spring. Its a tropical hotbed supporting 5% of the worlds biodiversity. The staggering variety of flora and fauna meant I came home with an abundance of material to work with." --- @cathnelsonart To find out more, email: [email protected] #catherinenelson #catherinenelsonartist #futurememories #futurememories2020 #australianphotography #contemporaryphotography #comingsoon #michaelreidberlin #michaelreidsydney

09.01.2022 Art World Trends & Habit-Breaking During a Time of Crisis During a time of crisis, change in social and business practice occurs in two distinct yet interrelated ways, with these twin transformations occurring separately and in lockstep. The first great change is that a deep crisis accelerates trends that are already taking place. The second significant alteration being that a crisis can be habit breaking. Let me first explain the notion of trend acceleration....Continue reading

09.01.2022 Banks Florilegium comprises an astonishing 743 botanical engravings of plants collected by Sir Joseph Banks and Dr Daniel Solander in Maderia, Brazil, Tierra del Fuego, the Society Islands, New Zealand, Australia and Java on Captain Cooks first voyage round the world in His Majestys Bark Endeavour, 17681771. On his return to London in 1771, Banks determined to publish a grand scientific record of his botanical collection. Over thirteen years, while Daniel Solander prepare...d the accompanying botanical texts, Banks employed five artists to complete the field sketches drawn on board ship from the fresh specimens by Sydney Parkinson, and eighteen engravers to create exquisite copperplate line engravings from the drawings. All of the plants included for publication were new to European botany. By 1784 all of the plates had been completed but, for a variety of reasons, Banks delayed publication. On his death in 1820, having served as President of the Royal Society for forty years and recognized as the great panjandrum of European science, Banks bequeathed his library and herbarium, together with the Florilegium plates, to the British Museum. Posted @withregram @wilamina_russo In 2016 @lukeshadbolt held his first exhibition titled Maelstrom. This is one of my favourite images of the series. The way the waves curl back up on each other, it looks almost like a flamenco dancers dress ... I liken Luke to part storm chaser, part stunt man, part photographic artist. The watching of weather patterns, the planing of trips, the guts to be out in the crazy weather and then the patience and dedication to capture these exact moments, its a pretty extraordinary combination. Hence the extraordinary result. Luke joined me for this weeks Interview With An Artist. Tune in Thursday. See more

02.01.2022 Coming at the end of the month to Michael Reid Sydney: JOHN HONEYWILL When asked about the isolated presentation of objects in his paintings in an Artist Profile interview with @owen_craven, John responded: "Well, the paintings are not naturalistic paintings in any way they’re not a still-life of a domestic scene. That hasn’t been something that’s ever interested me. What I’m interested in is the act of looking, perceiving an object and trying to capture more its presence..., and also the relationship to the space around it. That’s the most important thing really, and that’s why when I paint I do all the background first because that seems to be the most critical part for me."
