24.01.2022 A lovely #maroondahmoments post from @sa4mel for NAIDOC week which finished yesterday Regram - Another look at the Mullum Mullum Creek near my house. During lock down this place was a source of mental stability. The word for water in the Woiwurrung language is 'yarra' and 'yarra yarra' means fast flowing water. Story goes that when the British first colonized the Port Phillip area a British leader and an Aboriginal elder were walking along what is now known the Yarra River i...n the city. The British man asked what the Woiwurrung people called it and the elder responded, "yarra" so the British decided to name the river that. They then came to another river and the British man asked what it was called. The elder replied 'yarra' again and at that point the British realized 'yarra' was the word for water. #mullummullumcreek #mullummullum #naidocweek #alwayswasalwayswillbeaboriginalland #maroondahmoments Maroondah City Council https://bit.ly/3lyDsVO

22.01.2022 Putting public art in Maroondah on the map Title: GlowB Artist: Benjamin Gilbert & Playce / 2017 Address: Wyreena Community Arts Centre , 13-23 Hull Road, Croydon GlowB, a collaboration between playspace designers, Playce, and artist Benjamin Gilbert, was awarded best cubby at the 2017 Melbourne Flower and Garden Show - primarily because it is so much more than a cubby. GlowB is interactive public art at its best, standing alone as a sculptural element within Wyreena’s mature... gardens, but happy being climbed over, and into. Maroondah has a diverse and interesting collection of public art. You can enliven your daily walk and bike ride by visiting a public artwork near you. 16.01.2022 Putting public art on the map in Maroondah. Located at the entry to Maroondah Federation Estate, this work from 2012 by Benjamin Gilbert is titled 'Leaf Cubby'. Crafted from stainless steel, the work plays on the way children interact with their environment by creating hiding places from natural materials. The work creates an elegant entry point to this much-loved community meeting place. 15.01.2022 A #maroondahmoments Christmas in Ringwood Town Square Regram - @sa4mel This was taken on the first night that I went out for dinner after restaurants were allowed to open for dine in again after Melbourne's second lockdown. At the start of 2020 I had ideas of being in Europe around this time and seeing the Christmas markets for myself. Instead I found myself appreciating the Christmas decorations of my local shopping centre and feeling a bit surprised that I wasn't more disa...ppointed about not getting to travel overseas and especially to make use of French and German which I speak with reasonable fluency for traveller needs (I remember last year in Brussels telling a waiter 'je suis d'Australie' - I am from Australia - and having him start bouncing like a kangaroo!). Yet there was also a sense of empathy as I knew a lot of my European friends have just gone back into lockdown. So, European friends, this lit Christmas tree in Australia is for you! #maroondahmoments #eastland #christmastree #covidchristmas #ringwood #australia #horsdelisolement #townsquare Maroondah City Council Eastland https://bit.ly/36TCpd1

10.01.2022 We are pleased to welcome a new suite of works by the artist Beric Henderson in the lightboxes at San Carlos Way in Croydon, on display until February 23rd. Based in Port Macquarie in New South Wales, Beric Henderson has a background in art and science and his art explores the connection between humans and nature. Describing the current display, the artist notes that the works are abstract reflections of the intimate connection we have to nature and the planet. Through my art I aim to inspire appreciation of the environment and the need to preserve it!.

07.01.2022 Putting public art in Maroondah on the map Artwork: Spotted Marsh Frog Artist: Ian Bracegirdle / 2019 Address: Near Fred Geale Oval, Croydon Here's the artist, Ian affectionately standing with his delightful creation.... Ian Bracegirdle’s sculpture captures the Spotted Marsh Frog, a species found in the nearby Tarralla Creek Wetlands, as it perches on reeds. The dynamic pose and engaging features of this artwork may endear it to local families, but the subject matter is also a reminder of the fragility of urban ecosystems. The sculptor captures a local species quite literally, in the balance. See more
