24.01.2022 Its been so wonderful seeing the beauty of the region highlighted through the work of our artist-in-residence Ron McBurnie. Here is Rons final residency update and we cant wait to see the full exhibition of works produced during his residency at Artspace Mackay in 2021..... Yesterday I went back to Slade Point and continued to work on the pen and ink drawing I had begun a few days earlier before a rare mid afternoon bank of sea fog covered the beach by 2.30pm. Yesterdays view from under my pandanas was spectacular with a light breeze blowing from the South east. It ruffled the waves a little as they made the shoreline. My host Ros Jones told me that she had seen two humpback whales that morning from the observation deck, a mother and calf who were as close as a hundred metres from the shore.

23.01.2022 Patricia Piccinini invites audiences to think about their place in a world where advances in biotechnology and digital technologies blur the lines between human, nature and the artificial world. 11.01.2022 Weekend update from our artist-in-residence Ron McBurnie... Eungella is such a wonderful place. So many places to explore. On Saturday I drove along Diggings road to a wonderful park like place near a small river where I looked across to a couple of monumental bone like trees which may have been washed there after flooding. I spent the afternoon drawing them. On the second day morning I worked on a drawing in the Broken River Rainforest of a large tree before driving to Eungella Dam, then taking in a number of rainforest patches closer to the Eungella township. The drawing in not quite complete but well underway.

08.01.2022 First steps towards a refresh of the public artwork True North by established Queensland artist Donna Marcus have commenced and we couldn't be more excited to see the results in the New Year! Originally commissioned by Lendlease and Mackay Regional Council and constructed from marine buoys and lights, the artwork relates to Mackay's buoyant mining community, working port and recreational marina, as well as marking safe passage through the Great Barrier Reef to Matsuura. Coun...cil consulted with Donna Marcus and voted to refresh the artwork by remaking the smaller of the two buoys in white, repainting the poles in white and upgrading the metal elements and fixtures of the larger buoy. Elements of the larger buoy will be allowed to fade to create an effective contrast between the two elements and generate a new, enhanced interpretation of the works. This is in keeping with Donna's practice of working with found objects that "have had quite the life". Donna recalls fondly the practice of adorning Queensland gardens with marine buoys found washed up on the beach.
08.01.2022 #ReflectionOnTheCollection Have you ever stopped to look closely at Artspace Mackay’s permanent public artwork outside the front doors? With a background in visual arts, theology, and a passion for nature, Far North Queensland artist Jill Chism has created The elemental labyrinth 2002. It features eight words standing in for the elements: water, wood, fire, metal, earth, mountain, wind, and sky. The maze-like pattern encourages a ritualistic path of twists and turns into the... centre and then out again. Images: Jill CHISM The elemental labyrinth 2002, marble, slate, aluminium and glass tiles on concrete, 7 metres diam. Mackay Regional Council Art Collection.
