23.01.2022 Pigment numbers are a total game changer when it comes to understanding paint. A pigment number is a special code made up of letters and numbers and assigned to a specific pigment. This code always begins with the letter 'P' for pigment, and is followed by a Y (Yellow), O (Orange), R (Red), V (Violet), B (Blue), G (Green), Br (Brown), Bk (Black), or W (White). This combination of letters is followed by a number that identifies the pigment. For example, Ultramarine Blue is alw...ays identifiable as PB29. Prussian Blue is always PB27. Quinacridone Magenta is PR122 (there is no category for pink, so magentas etc. are reds). Bone Black is PBk9. With this information, you can find out what pigments are in your paint. Payne's Grey, for example, is not one pigment, but the combination of PBk9, Bone Black, and PB29, Ultramarine Blue, (depending on brands) Most importantly, however, you can become an informed consumer, and know what is actually in your paint. Or better still create your own paints using pigments.
