24.01.2022 Our autumn tour day trip to Yokohama
24.01.2022 Photos from a previous tour that included the 21st Century Museum in Kanazawa. Another "white box" gallery although this one is circular! I must admit I find all white tiring on the eyes! Interesting interactive exhibits including Leandro Erlich's "The Swimming Pool", a crowd favorite. Fortunately the Kenroku-en is nearby and the lush green of this expansive garden gives visual relief.
23.01.2022 We have only two places left for our spring (May) and three for our autumn (November) 2018 tours which will both include a visit to the space-age art museum the Miho Museum. It was designed by the architect I.M.Pei who was also responsible for the extension to the Louvre in Paris. Described by him as Shangri-La its location deep in the mountains of Shigaraki prefecture does give it the appearance of a perfect place isolated from civilisation. Its extensive collection of Asian and Western antiques enhances this mystique. Hope you can join us on one of these art tours!
21.01.2022 Promo for exhibition of Meiji period woodblock-printed frontispieces (kuchi-e) that Gary is curating at the National Library of Australia. We will post more images from the show prior to its opening on 23 May. Let me know if you plan to be in Canberra around that time.
20.01.2022 First day of our Spring Tour. iPad view from our hotel room of Kyoto Station with Kyoto Tower in the background. Looking forward to tomorrow when we are off to Naoshima 'Art Island'.

17.01.2022 We will be visiting the Adachi Museum garden as well as staying at the Akashi-en Minamidera ryokan on our upcoming spring tour. These gardens have been ranked number 1 and 5 in the Sukiya Living garden magazine. Hope you can join us when we visit these sites on one of our tours.
17.01.2022 Highlights of our just completed Autumn tour of Japan - day 1 Kamakura and the Daibustu 'Giant Buddha'. Further highlights to follow.
17.01.2022 I recently purchased this Koishiwara-yaki plate near my home in Australia. It was made in Koishiwara village near Onta village in Fukuoka prefecture which we will be visiting on our upcoming autumn tour. Both pottery villages have produced a similar style of everyday tableware since the Edo period (1600-1868). The simple beauty of these wares can be seen in this plate with its concentric design of incised cuts overlaid with a white slip (finger marked in the center) with two splashes of green and yellow. Looking forward to seeing more!
16.01.2022 We will be seeing this exhibition when we visit the fabulous Miho Museum on our upcoming spring tour.
14.01.2022 Revisited Kurashiki on our recent tour and was able to spend extended time wandering the fascinating town. In the stairway above the main lobby of the Kurashiki Kokusai Hotel is displayed Munakata Shiko’s large woodblock print, ‘The Great Barriers of the Universe’ (Daisekai-no-Saku), a work commissioned in 1963 by Ohara Soichiro for display in the hotel. Originally titled ‘From Men to God’ (Kenko sho) the print, a prayer for the peace and happiness of humankind, was later renamed by the artist. It is one of a pair of works the other being titled ‘The Great Barriers of the Universe: from God to Men’ which was displayed at the 1970 Expo ’70 world’s fair in Osaka.
13.01.2022 In Katsurazaka residential area to visit 1,400 year old burial tombs known as kofun. These kofun consist of over 20 round-shaped tombs in land which is now a park. These tombs were discovered in the 1980s when this area was being developed. The developer had laid trails and opened this area but because they could not upkeep the site it was closed. It is now looked after by local volunteers who open it to the public twice a year in spring and autumn. We were fortunate to visit here during its spring opening.
13.01.2022 About to head off for another exciting Japan tour, this time including trips to Kamakura and Hakone.
12.01.2022 On an early morning walk during our recent Spring Art Tour Japan I was able to get up close to this framed art work mounted on the cliffs of Naoshima Island. Any guesses about who created this work and why?
