22.01.2022 Here's some food for thought ... coming up at SMOKE ON THE WATER next week. Presentation Overview: Smoke on the Water, 2017 by Rowley Drysdale. Good folk, its ...time to conduct a viability check, subject - our beloved woodfired ceramics medium. Lets state the obvious who better to do it than makers, collectors, publishers, directors, the younger and the older, all together in one place at one time. Can producing wood fired ceramics remain (if it ever was) financially viable, environmentally viable, socially and creatively viable, or is just too compromising to personal and planetary health, not to mention the bank balance. Just how culturally relevant is wood firing in the 21st century, how sustainable? Always look on the bright side of ... handmade, earthy ceramic things ... da da, dada, dad a. Lets attempt to unearth some clues. Arguably, there is a societal shift valuing objects which encapsulate a non-industrial, lower-tech, organic origin and woodfire ceramics well reflect this. That might be good. And ... maybe there is a deepening awareness concerning provenance of ware to match that expressed in provenance of the food which sits on it, (or in it). Could it be, finally, exit polystyrene coffee cup? And ... perhaps the handmade, woodfired earthy coffee cup does symbolise a hipster-type modern aesthetic. Or will it end up running a close second to the recycled glass jar, vegemite or not? Theres a saying that goes good woodfired ceramics is born old, or alternatively, born humble, but how relevant is that in post-truth Trumpian society? A mate of mine muttered woodfiring is enforced Buddhism to which I hastily agreed it can be materially obstinate and something was said about an emotional roller coaster and low pay, low tech events coordinating. But we got up off the canvas. Troubling observation is that this type of behaviour often precedes a knockout punch. Ultimately, woodfiring is a way of making art. Specifically its a way of creating particular surfaces on objects with particular phenomenal character. Does it communicate enough to enough people? Is it properly tuned and is the volume up loud enough/down low enough? In the context of woodfiring these are relevant questions but actually, equally as important to any ceramic artist who loads work into a kiln, or for that matter into the surf, or a corporate foyer ... Theres no time like now to tackle the hard questions. Now is always the right time. Woodfiring invites collaboration, demands it, unless you are some crazy mountain-man, potter type. Problem solving is somewhat the same. Smoke on the Water 2017 organisers invite all and sundry to the conversation, regardless of whether or not you throw wood into a kiln. Together we solve, or agree theres nothing to solve. At which point we can all retire to the bar, or lounge chairs, smiles on faces. Rowley Drysdale

12.01.2022 An Extraordinary Fairy Tale that seems too good to be true and yet it is !!! A Rare one these days! Introducing Anand Malligavad, our special guest on Opening ...Night of Waning our current exhibition on the topic of vanishing habitats and our emotional reactions to it through the media of clay and photography. He needs a separate post and write up:-) We were both delighted and honoured that he could spend time with us. It made our visual voice stronger. An extraordinary gentleman indeed...his contribution to rejuvenating lakes around Bangalore even more so. Over the course of this journey, the path was not very smooth and straight for him, he had to battle - Administrative hurdles, the land Mafia, the encroachments, Funding support and most importantly he had to win over the mindset of the people. Having fought all the odds, Now, His efforts have paid off. His approach to lake rejuvenation is systematic and scientific. It involves rejuvenation of streams of inter-connected lakes divided into 4 different zones of Bangalore based on the topography and Gravity. Lake rejuvenation, he says is not just focusing on water, but changing the whole ecology surrounding it, making it a self-sustainable eco system representing the natural ecology of ancient times. Here's some extraordinary, even incredible statistics!!!!: It makes total economic sense to be doing this on a national, perhaps a global model... The rejuvenated lakes host 38000 saplings, and 4 miyawaki forests planted with the help of 20000 volunteers in record timing! He employs engineering techniques for lake rejuvenation which is highly cost effective and innovative and proven to be successful!. After the lake rejuvenation, nearly 180+ bore wells have been recharged and the land value around the lakes have shot up drastically and has improved the lives of the farmers. These lakes have become home to 100s of varieties of native trees, and birds. His work has now been studied by many top academic institutions for their research. 11.01.2022 "For those who know Klee as the father of abstract art, this lesson may seem surprising. However, Klee was deeply concerned with creating movement in his compositions. And he asserted that all artworkseven the most abstractshould be inspired by nature. Follow the ways of natural creation, the becoming, the functioning of forms, he taught his students. Then perhaps starting from nature you will achieve formations of your own, and one day you may even become like nature yourself and start creating. Artsy

06.01.2022 It's not about the Artist or even the Art. It's all about the SUBJECT. Anh Do excels in this video, but that seemed besides the point. A must watch.

03.01.2022 An interesting thing we noticed today, was a facebook user saying they were working at Art Weaves. This person is not working with us! How strange! We are waiting on them to rectify this, else we'll be forced to name the person and publish the falsehood.
