25.01.2022 Looking forward to this one!
24.01.2022 Vanessa spent the last two weeks packing artefacts at the Old Farm Strawberry Hill in Albany. Everything had to be taken to a storage facillity prior to reslating of the roof. The local community was fantastic, with a harpist providing advice on moving the 18th century harp and a clock repairer assisting in the preparation of the clocks. Vanessa also didnt have to look too far for extra assistance with packing duties, with locals Maggie Myers (ex WA Museum conservator) and Ruth Harloe (Strawberry Hill deputy warden) coming to her aid over the long weekend. The team from Grace Removalists also did an amazing job. The project was featured in two local papers.
22.01.2022 Our last project of the year was a definite highlight. Vanessa spent two days in New Norcia, a Spanish style monastery town in the WA countryside. She conserved an architectural model and carried out an emergency repair of a figurine for the Christmas nativity. The model was a proposed cathedral and new monastery for New Norcia designed by the innovative Italian engineer, Nervi back in the late 50s. It was designed on a grand scale with space for 100 monks and a congregation of 1200. There are now just 8 monks in New Norcia and church services often have only a handful of visitors. Two of the monks commented thank god it was never built!
22.01.2022 As you can see, dry ice blasting was extremely effective at removing the various kinds of graffiti. However, due to the sensitive nature of weathering steels patina, some shadowing has remained. This will gradually reduce over time.
21.01.2022 The Wonders of Hot Water Lots of ceramics and glass to take apart and rejoin this week. My early tests showed that they would all come apart using acetone, but once I got into it I found that there were several different adhesives used. They weren't all soluble in acetone or other organic solvents. I found my new favourite method..cheap, non-toxic, environmentally friendly and worked a treat on those stubborn joins!
21.01.2022 Vanessa and new assistant Jerry recently conserved the John Septimus Roe gravesite at East Perth Cemetery. Work involved cleaning and patching the concrete base, repairing and repainting the fence. Some parts of the fence were missing and were recast for us by Metal Ox Ironworks. The Roe family helped fund the conservation work ahead of a ceremony to honour John Septimus Roe.
18.01.2022 The last few weeks Jerry and Vanessa have been back at East Perth Cemetery working on the Explorers Monument. The project involved removing old paint and corrosion, stabilising the monument and repainting. After a short breather, the team will be back at East Perth shortly to work on some smaller projects. Vanessa also visited Old Busselton cemetery this week to advise on future conservation work.

10.01.2022 CRAFTERNOON at ArtWorks Conservation! I have been working on a Lighthorse saddle with an extremely fragile insect eaten felt pad. I have been learning the craft of needle felting in order to create infills for the felt, preventing further tears. Needle felting is surprisingly quick, easy and satisfying. I use prefelt flimsys as my backing fabric, then put on a layer of dyed fleece, stab it with a felting needle to felt them together, cut to shape and glue in place.

07.01.2022 The Art Gallery of Western Australia contacted us recently about removing graffiti from this weathering steel sculpture by Clement Meadmore. Successful testing had been carried out in the US to remove graffiti from architectural weathering steel using dry ice blasting. We were keen to see this technique for ourselves, and the fantastic team from Global Testing Services volunteered to carry out dry ice blasting for us pro bono!
