24.01.2022 Thanks, Digital Andamooka, for illustrating social distancing.

23.01.2022 BEN ROBERTS is in a creative mood with these constructions using recycled metal.

23.01.2022 CREATING DURING THE COVID TIME: PART 4 BECK HANOLD, aka Beckles Freckles, lives in Andamooka, in the amazing Outback, South Australia. Beck started her art career with face painting. Initially, she only painted her children's faces for Halloween and dress-ups, but it wasn't long before requests for face painting at birthday parties and other events followed. When Beckles Freckles discovered Instagram, it resulted in new friendships and collaborations with SFX make-up artists.... When Beck was invited to join a small art group in Cowell, she learned that she preferred painting canvases to people. Beck experimented with a range of non-traditional art media including Hair Dye and Vegemite. Word of her stunningly beautiful Vegemite paintings soon spread around the region, leading to interviews on radio and local recognition of Beck’s talent. Early 2020, Beck was invited to illustrate a children's book. Beck was hesitant as this was her first opportunity to illustrate a book project, but she took a big leap and completed eleven graphite and charcoal illustrations of South Australian animals and invertebrates (as well as six sketches for the glossary) for Barossa Nanna and the Outback Camping Adventure. She thoroughly enjoyed this new experience and is looking forward to more art opportunities of this nature. The book is scheduled to be available for Christmas. (It is not available for pre-order.) These framed, A4 landscape, gorgeous illustrations are now available for purchase from Beck via Messenger. See more

22.01.2022 Tarzan is a long term resident in Andamooka. An opal miner since 1964, he has now retired from seeking opal from one of the deepest holes (75 feet) in Hallion Hill. Acrylic painting and water colouring now fills his time. "Tarzan" is Drago Antic (D. Antic). Tarzan celebrated his 88th birthday on 13 April in isolation due to Covid-19. Think of Tarzan and then remember the movie "The Last of the Knucklemen" (1979) filmed in Andamooka. https://tinyurl.com/y8okumny Tarzan stars in "The Sand That Ate The Sea" recently filmed in Andamooka https://vimeo.com/402804307

21.01.2022 After a hard day of labouring in parks and gardens, Beck Hanold (aka Beckles Freckles) is celebrating the licensing of her illustrations for a children’s Ebook Barossa Nanna and the Outback Camping Adventure. The framed illustrations will be for sale during SALA (South Australian Living Artists) Festival, August 2020. Congratulations, Beck!

21.01.2022 CREATING DURING THE COVID TIME: PART 5 TRISH CURNOW is a long-term resident of Andamooka, a local with a recent immersion in mosaic art. During 2018 and 2019 (pre-Covid time), Trish participated in mosaic workshops and exhibited in Andamooka’s SALA (South Australian Living Artists) Festival Exhibition.... Andamooka Boo-teek is an award-winning opportunity shop managed by the CWA (Country Women’s Association) members. The Andamooka Boo-teek offers second-hand clothes, toys and furniture for sale. Also, kitchen utensils, including crockery. Crockery for mosaic! Trish had a chat with the CWA team and struck up a deal for first refusal of incomplete dinner sets or any crockery that was chipped or broken, rather than those chipped items going to landfill. Trish collected and sorted; created piles according to colour/texture and stored her crockery and collected some more. Kitchen and bathroom tiles from the local dump were transported home; cleaned, sorted and stacked. Andamooka is a small community with a population of 316 (according to the 2016 census). Andamooka people are resourceful and resilient and quite used to repurposing and recreating. Trish put the word around that she was looking for glass, tile and crockery and the donations flooded in. This amount of support for Trish’s desire to learn a new skill could be because Trish is always helpful to others. Trish was ready. Winter 2018, after many years of promises, Heather Gordon sat with Trish in the sun porch of an Andamooka House and the Basic Mosaic class commenced. Donna, Debbie, Lily, Summer and Mel joined Trish in the sun porch. Trish demonstrated her passion for this art and the determination to progress her mosaic ambitions. Trish exhibited her mosaics during SALA (South Australian Living Artists) Festival Exhibition at Andamooka during 2018 and 2019 as well as contributing to the art display in the Andamooka Hall for the Governor’s visit on 18 June 2019. Trish had a grouting day recently. Sandy Samuels-Rowan volunteered her assistance. A reminder that old clothes must be worn while grouting. No one ever looks glamorous while grouting. (Thanks for the sneaky photo of Trish grouting, Sandy.) Meet Ashleei the Owl and Sticky Licky the Froggy; grouted and enjoying the views of Andamooka.

20.01.2022 CREATING DURING THE COVID TIME: PART 3 During the Summer, #ChadoThePirate explores the ocean, working with rope on a cray boat. During the Winter, he explores the arid zone, taking photographs and working with metal. A Winter resident of Andamooka for more than 20 years, last Winter Chado provided support to the metal workshops for Andamooka Youth Group and donated his metal Poppy construction to the Andamooka Memorial Park. This year there are Covid19 restrictions; therefore, no group work. Instead, he is collecting resources for a special piece of junk art as well as seeking outback locations to pose the skate decks created by #HannahAndArt. #southaustralia #southaustralianartist

19.01.2022 Congratulations to Andamooka artist BILL ADDINGTON for exhibiting his art works at the Bearded Dragon Gallery. https://beardeddragongallery.com.au/pro/current-exhibition/

17.01.2022 Pre-COVID Times - a book draft with photographs by Andamooka local, TRISH CURNOW. During COVID times, many restrictions with many roadblocks along the way, especially for book publishing. "Andamooka Bill and the Lights on the Hill" is now available as an Ebook only. Not to have a print book is frustrating for the small team of people who have toiled to get it this far. It is disappointing not to be able to touch the glossy illustrations, to savour the ‘new book’ smell, to phy...sically share it with other readers. I’m deeply disappointed not to be able to lean against a bonnet outside the bottleshop in the sunshine and share in the Bonnet Club’s reactions (more brickbats than bouquets, probably) to the final book while Trish gets credit for her photographs. I’m grateful to the many locals for their contribution to Andamooka Bill and the Lights on the Hill. COVID19 has seen many small businesses close; some temporarily, others forever. Book publishing is an uncertain industry at any time. It has been a difficult road to navigate to get "Andamooka Bill and the Lights on the Hill" out in the world. Let's celebrate and share the news! https://www.booktopia.com.au/andamooka//9780648823933.html See more

16.01.2022 CREATING DURING THE COVID TIME: PART 6 BEN ROBERTS is an Andamooka artist who enjoys recycling metal. He’s branching out into wood and stone.

15.01.2022 I have always loved being creative and experimenting with lots of different art forms. I have tried drawing, sewing, scrapbooking, movie making and mosaics. The year before last I was lucky enough to show my mosaic art in the local SALA exhibition. I have always really enjoyed drawing; particularly dogs and other cute animals. Late last year my Mum and Dad bought me some drawing gear and a set of watercolour paints and brushes for my 11th birthday. Soon after, I was hooked o...n painting. I love that you can set it up quickly and achieve so many different shades with just one colour. I’m still quite new to watercolour painting and am figuring out how to add depth to my work and to find the best surfaces to paint on. I still need to work on not slopping the water all over my work. I love that I can share my love of animals through my painting. Lily Kemenyvary See more

15.01.2022 COMMUNITY CREATIVITY DURING COVID TIMES: PART 1 At the top of Absalom Lane, 3 Sturt Peas squat in their pots in the sun. Crafted by Chado from white galvanised steel mesh (donated by Bushy) with the boss of the peas being the lids cut from the drums. 3 x 44 gallon drums (thanks for the drums, Harley) anchor the planted peas in their place. Rusty barbed wire wraps twisted into submission by Heather and Yvonne (thanks Bill, for the barbed wire logistics from Naomi’s donation near Waikerie and from Liney and Bec’s donation near Sedan). Concept design by Heather, planned over time and distance; created in Ben’s workshop space. Photos by Junita. Click on over to Digital Andamooka for more Andamooka scenery.

09.01.2022 COMMUNITY CREATIVITY DURING COVID TIMES: PART 2 Minnie Berrington was Andamooka’s first female opal miner. Inspired by Minnie’s achievements, local artist Beck Hanold (aka Beckles Freckles) has created a painting of Minnie using Andamooka soils with a hint of opal. Beck has been prepping for this painting for months. The painting itself took almost a month to complete as each layer of soil had to dry before Beck could proceed with the work. Beck has been invited to display ...her unique depiction of Minnie at the launch of the Lapidary Workshop on Saturday 12 September at the Andamooka Community Hall. Join the Andamooka community on Saturday as researcher Stuart Wattinson presents an in-depth and fascinating look at Minnie and her importance in Andamooka’s history. Also, in attendance will be Lorna Cameron (née Brooks) and local opal miners who will talk about Andamooka opal and the future of opal mining. 09.01.2022 Cal the Stoner is a local artist. Andamooka artist Mary Ames used acrylic on canvas to capture Cal’s features. Originally from a tiny Greek island, Mary Ames attended the Athens School of Journalism before studying art in London and attaining the Specialist Techniques in Painting and Decorating City and Guilds Certificate. Mary completed a range of private commissions with London Interior Design. One of Mary’s lovely memories is of wearing painter’s overalls while striding al...ong the streets of London with the other members of the team as they carried ladders and paint to public houses to redecorate the interiors. Mary worked on a mural at a school in Spain and travelled extensively throughout Europe and particularly enjoyed her time in Ireland. Mary came to Semaphore, South Australia, during 2000 and worked as a consultant on private commissions and as a volunteer tutor in Furniture Restoration and Interior Design as well as volunteering at the Port Adelaide Community Arts Centre. In Andamooka, Mary’s unique outback home is made of local stone. It is whitewashed to remind her of her home island. Mary considers living in Andamooka is like living on an island; remote and with limited access. Mary works with a range of art media. She observes the world around her with a keen eye; collecting and sifting. Keeping what matters in her camera, and in her mind. See more

06.01.2022 JUNITA is an Andamooka resident who spends a lot of her time walking around town with her beloved entry-level camera. During 2020, the ABC breakfast show weather presenter, Nate, featured two of Junita’s photos of a sunrise and a sunset during his weather segment. This resulted in many people getting in touch with her from across the country wanting to know more about Andamooka and her photography. Due to this she has started printing and framing one-off signed photographs an...d has plans for 2021 to produce an affordable range for local tourists. Plus, a selection of cards. If you see Junita walking around town don’t hesitate to say hello. During 2021 Junita will also offer a pet photography service to locals. You can see more of Junita’s gorgeous photographs and contact her on Facebook at Digital Andamooka.
