11.01.2022 ATO "puts the brakes" on dodgy car claims The ATO is making work-related car expenses a key focus again during Tax Time 2019. Over 3.6 million people made a work-related car expense claim in 2017/18, totalling more than $7.2 billion and there is considerable concern at the ATO that many of these claims are deliberately or inadvertently inflated. One in five car claims are exactly at the maximum limit that doesn’t require receipts. ... Under the cents per kilometre method, taxpayers don’t need to keep receipts, but they do need to be able to demonstrate how they worked out the number of kilometres they travelled for work purposes. Where the ATO identifies questionable claims, they will contact taxpayers and ask them to show how they have calculated their claim, and in some cases the ATO may even contact employers to confirm whether a taxpayer was required to use their own car for work-related travel. 08.01.2022 Supporting Community Radio AS Accounting is a proud supporter of Brisbane community radio station 4ZZZ, and once again we are doing our bit to help out during Radiothon 2019 by putting up some prizes for subscribers. Radiothon is the station’s annual fundraising and subscription drive. It is a vital part of ensuring that the Zeds continues to broadcast. You can learn more about Radiothon (and for that matter, 4ZZZ itself) by visiting the Radiothon webpage at http://www.4zzz...fm.org.au/radiothon. Go on, do it and while you are there, hit the subscribe now link. Even if you don’t win a prize, you can still win in the world of accounting and tax by calling the team at AS Accounting on 07 3325 6555 to discuss how we can assist you, or you could visit us at http://www.asacc.com.au to learn more about our accounting services. 07.01.2022 Low-and-middle-income tax offset Many taxpayers will already be aware that the low and middle income tax offset (LAMITO) has been increased from a maximum amount of $530 to $1,080 per annum, and the base amount has increased from $200 to $255 per annum but did you realise that this is a tax offset rather than a cash refund? Another subtlety that is not widely understood is that the LAMITO is not for everyone. Only taxpayers with a taxable income above $48,000 and less than $90,001 will qualify for the maximum offset of $1,080. Need more information? Call the team at AS Accounting on 07 3325 6555, or drop us an email at [email protected]
