22.01.2022 Today is ‘R U OK’ Day. This week our business shout out goes to a company whose work is crucial in addressing mental health and suicide in Aboriginal communitie...s. Indigenous Psychological Services (IPS) delivers a unique range of mental health services and training programs to clients across Australia. IPS also self-funds research to ensure the cultural validity of programs, assessments and tests, believing it is essential that social justice and the addressing of inequity remains a constant focus of their work. IPS have also created a scholarship program to develop the next generation of Indigenous psychologists and focuses on students with remote and rural connections who are eager to continue to work in indigenous communities’ post-study. IPS is founded by Adjunct Professor Tracy Westerman of the Njamal people of the North West of WA. Tracy holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Psychology, a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology and Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Psychology). She is a recognised world leader in Aboriginal mental health, cultural competency and suicide prevention achieving national and international recognition for her work. Tracy receives no funding for any of her scholarships, research or programs from any Government bodies. Her message is that there is nothing we can’t achieve as Aboriginal people if we believe in ourselves. Indigenous plant use In 2019, the University of Melbourne was transformed by the breathtaking influx of 40,000 Kulin Nation plants as part of the Indigenous-led event, The Living Pavilion. These plants were accompanied by signs, carefully researched and curated by Barkandji woman Zena Cumpston, which articulated the plants from an Aboriginal perspective and explored their cultural, nutritional, technological and medicinal use. The plant research was so popular that many participants contacted Zena wanting to access the information. The new 'Indigenous plant use' booklet was created so people could continue learning.
