25.01.2022 The Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia would like to extend their gratitude and congratulations to Christine Parkin and her family for their bravery and commitment to justice for victims of asbestos related diseases. It is interesting to note that James Hardie Industries defended the first asbestosis case in Sydney in 1938... 82 years later they are still fighting victims. Christine joins a unique group of fighters following in the distinguished footsteps of early asbesto...s disease campaigners like Peter Heys and Tim Barrow who battled CSR in the 1980s with the knowledge that it has been known since the beginning of the 20th Century that asbestos dust is capable of manifesting crippling asbestos diseases amongst those working with asbestos. 19.01.2022 In 1985, the Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia Inc (ADSA) launched the first Asbestos Awareness Week. For 35 years, our organisation has been urging all Australians to be aware that asbestos is still present in millions of Australian homes; if a house was built or renovated before 1990, there's a good chance it contains some asbestos. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Australians have increased their love of DIY and are using the extra time at home to do some home improvements and maintenance. As such, ADSA would like to remind DIYers to take care and seek advice, as asbestos can be easily disturbed when doing renovations, home improvements and maintenance. Asbestos materials are still commonly found in bathrooms, laundries, kitchens, under tiles and flooring, as well as the usual outdoor suspects i.e. aging roofs, fences and sheds.

17.01.2022 It’s time to save lives. Let's commit to dedicated funding for our world leading mesothelioma research team NCARD based at The University of Western Australia. Let’s give hope to those exposed in the past and those being exposed everyday through renovating pre-1990 homes... those innocently living next door to poorly-managed asbestos demolition... or those washing their partner's asbestos-covered work clothes... tradies like electricians and plumbers having to provide services through existing asbestos products... and teachers and students in ageing schools and buildings. 14.01.2022 ASBESTOS WARNING Clean up crews have been called in, after asbestos was discovered, scattered along a 16 kilometre stretch of South Western Highway. Locals believe it may have fallen off the back of a truck. Main Roads says it should be cleared within a week.
12.01.2022 In 2014, the Asbestos Response Taskforce recommended that the ACT Government mandate that the contract of sale for any home built before 1980 include a full asbestos assessment. But that hasn't happened.
10.01.2022 We are delighted to announce the 2020 recipient of the PROFESSOR ERIC G. SAINT MEMORIAL AWARD... Dr Sue Ulreich MBBS, FRANZCR, FAICD, CEO SKG Radiology, in recognition of her dedicated leadership providing leading-edge diagnostic screening services for those affected by asbestos diseases. "When I started at SKG Radiology back in late 1993, I was rostered to regular radiologist working days at what was then Mercy Hospital in Mt Lawley (now SJOG Mt Lawley Hospital). The late Dr... John Glancy (chest radiologist) and I were frequently at Mt Lawley reporting together. I recall during my first week, John asked - did I know the history of asbestos in this state? I was trained in medicine in Adelaide and I had seen a few patients suffering from the effects of asbestos before. John explained the detailed background pertaining to Western Australia and how important is the work of ADSA on behalf of their members. Thus I was well inducted right from the start that ADSA plays a very meaningful role. I’ve done my best to make sure that SKG always strives to provide excellent imaging services for diagnosis, monitoring, detection of complications and imaging-guided procedures. I have a better appreciation these days of what life is like on the other side of medicine having recently gone through breast cancer treatment myself. I am very honoured to be this year’s Dr Eric Saint award recipient. Thank you to ADSA for their truly caring work on behalf of their members. 08.01.2022 In 1988, ABC’s Four Corners and reporter Paul Barry exposed the scandalous impact of blue asbestos mining at Wittenoom in WA. Mining had stopped in the 1960s, but locals were now dying of mesothelioma and asbestosis. 03.01.2022 Dear Members and Friends, After 30+ years of fighting for fair and just standards, we have excellent news today of the new government regulations to protect workers from silica dust. We congratulate the McGowan Government and the Honourable Bill Johnson MLA for listening to the concerns of workers, unions, our organisation and other stakeholders. Over the years, we've seen the effects silicosis has had on some of our members and indeed the loss of life from the development o...f lung cancer from this incurable disease. Prevention is key to saving lives. Kind Regards, Robert Vojakovic AM JP President # # # "Workplace exposure standard for respirable crystalline silica halved to 0.05 milligrams per cubic metre effective today and respirable coal dust halved to 1.5 milligrams per cubic metre effective October 27, 2021. The McGowan Government has taken steps to reduce the risk of workers contracting potentially deadly lung diseases by halving the workplace exposure standards for respirable crystalline silica (which causes silicosis) and respirable coal dust. Respirable crystalline silica may be generated by a range of work activities, including: * fabrication and installation of composite (engineered or manufactured) stone countertops; * brick, concrete or stone cutting (angle grinding, jackhammering and chiselling); * excavation, tunnelling, earthmoving and drilling operations; * mining, quarrying and mineral ore treatment processes; * clay and stone processing machine operations; * paving and surfacing; and * abrasive blasting and foundry casting."
