18.01.2022 What not to do..... A rental tenant in Queensland recently became fed up with the cockroach infestation in their rental property. Their solution to the problem was to make a hole in the wall and fill it with cockroach spray, and then of course to light it. The resulting explosion caused the exterior wall to blow out and the tenant then had a costly asbestos removal and repair job to pay for.... Thanks to John and Rodney for the photo.

17.01.2022 Thank you Allona Lahn for this piece and the fantastic photos. I wonder where all those asbestos baby suits and socks are today?

12.01.2022 H-Class industrial strength vacuums are specified in the NT WorkSafe Code of Practice How to Safely Remove Asbestos as the recommended method for the removal of asbestos containing dusts and small pieces of debris. However, it is important that these vacuums are regularly maintained, inspected and tested. Vacuum cleaners used for asbestos need to comply with the Class H requirements in AS/NZS 60335.2.69 Particular requirements for wet and dry vacuum cleaners, including power ...brush, for industrial and commercial use or its international equivalents. In addition, HEPA filters used in H-Class vacuums also need to comply with AS 4260-1997 High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters Classification, construction and performance or its international equivalent. While the Standards documents are not free, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland has produced a new guide covering maintenance requirements and tips; which national standards apply; a range of testing issues; as well as information on what a WHSQ inspector will look for. Please follow the link to the guide which is available in PDF format from the following link: http://www.deir.qld.gov.au//maintenance-inspection-and-tes

04.01.2022 Low density asbestos fibre boards (LDB) are lightly compressed boards which looks similar to asbestos cement sheeting or plaster board and are often used as a fire retardant. Analysis of LDB samples has shown it contains up to 70 per cent (by volume) asbestos fibres and is generally composed of brown asbestos (amosite) and white asbestos (chrysotile) in a calcium silicate plaster. Brand names for common types of LDB include Asbestolux and Duralux. When installed, painted, dec...orated and in good condition, it is visually very difficult (virtually impossible) to tell the difference between LDB and any other flat profile construction sheeting. Many asbestos registers fail to distinguish between LDB and other asbestos cement products. The following video shows the ease with which LDB can be damaged by hand pressure alone. Note the large asbestos fibres protruding from the sample, and the small particles of dust released each time the sample is broken. *This was filmed under very strict hygiene conditions. Please do not try this at home, or anywhere else for that matter.
