24.01.2022 Bath time with Errol

24.01.2022 Passive engagements. If I am being honest I just wanted to write about this topic because I love this photo a friend of mine took of a recent session with Charlie. And no matter how many times I tell myself that I will take it easy on Charlie, I can't help but let him work in his favourite way - biting people in bite suits. Back on topic though, there are some people who think that a screaming decoy running around intimidatingly in front of a dog is the hardest scenario to t...rain for. I would say that having a dog that will bite a totally passive and completely still decoy who offers no feedback for a period of time post engagement is the one of the hardest pictures. Why? Because there is no animation, or confirmation in the dog's mind of the target through feedback and movement. This means the dog has to make the fight all on its own, and can't rely on a decoy cueing it into action. On another note, I use passive bites sometimes for my own dog as he is easily over aroused, and passive engagements give him a more relaxed picture he can work with, maintaining a clearer head instead of gassing himself through overexertion early on.

21.01.2022 Errol is almost six months old and as I approach my end of year break I am happy to share his most recent progress. We're now reliably tracking in complex urban environments with intense distractions up to 250. Obedience foundations have been laid, as has his calm and full grip when biting.... Environmentally he's rock solid and I have exposed him a huge variety of different things. 2021 for Errol will focus heavily on play, suspicion, tracking new track layer's, and complex scenarios once he's able to work the bite suit.

19.01.2022 Warmer weather means more swimming! Charlie wasn't able to swim when he first came to me - the first video I received about him was a vid of him struggling to swim. But after years of swimming practice he is a true maligator and a great swimmer!

18.01.2022 Reality based training. Like any skill or trade, there is only so much that can be learnt through reading books or training on a grassy field devoid of real life distractions. Theoretical understanding of dog training and psychology are vital, and so is progressing from a calm non-distracting environment to a more intense one. But running straightforward apprehension or tracking scenarios will only take you so far. There is ALWAYS something new to train with our dogs. I lik...e to add different insertion methods like abseiling, canoeing, quad biking, ute riding, and so on to basic tracking and apprehension training scenarios. This is so that the dogs I train can handle weird circumstances and then roll straight into work. I also like to find odd places to train; storm water tunnels, water parks, farms, buildings, jetties, alleyways, cliffs, roof tops, rivers, boats, airports, hardware stores etc. I like running training everywhere I can so that I don't have a dog that will become stressed out by the environment it is operating in; it will just work on the task at hand.

17.01.2022 Have you been naughty (like Errol) or nice (like Charlie)?

15.01.2022 More enviro training with Errol. It'll all pay off when we start apprehension training and he's engaging threats in canoes and on shopping trolleys

14.01.2022 Dirk and Errol. In this video mash up Dirk is 11 months old and Errol is 5 months old. This was Dirk's last track before flying off to the Army, and this was Errol's last track for 2020.... Errol is (as objectively as I can compare them) 6 months ahead of Dirk in my training progression plan. Can't wait to see just how far I can push him before he moves on to bigger and better things

12.01.2022 Watch out single ladies of Canberra, Errol's dating profile is online and ready to be swiped on

12.01.2022 Can you spot me in this video? Training dogs to a high standard requires a lot of effort. I am always willing to go the extra mile for dogs I help train. Thanks to my experience in the Army, I have learnt how to hide fairly well. Don't ask a sniper's opinion about this though I use a head and shoulders shroud to hide in the bush so that a dog tracking me must literally touch me to bring me to life and locate me. It also helps conceal me from bong smoking kids who were nearby whilst I waited to be found

10.01.2022 Dirk trailing. I experimented a lot with Dirk's trailing/tracking training as I raised him. Some things worked, some things didn't. My handling skills stick out as one of the most jarring skills I've improved upon.... Here Dirk's running an aged track of around 10 minutes in high winds. Miss you Dirk

08.01.2022 Today marks 102 years since the end of World War One. Today I wanted to share a story which moved me when I first read it some years ago. This is the story of Satan, a French Messenger Dog who saved many lives at the Battle of Verdun. Satan was assigned the dangerous task of delivering a message from French commanders that contained the words that would bring vital relief to the besieged soldiers under heavy attack by the Germans. The life-saving message read: For God’s sak...Continue reading

08.01.2022 Dirk's Tree House of Horrors

06.01.2022 This is what 7 weeks of tracking training looks like with Errol. We've moved from article indications at the start to tracking across various surfaces such as grass, dirt, concrete, asphalt, and footpaths. Can handle corners, wind, and medium contamination. Next I'll add in duration between the time I lay the track and run it, and even more challenging environments.

04.01.2022 Had a very nice float down the Murrumbidgee river recently with Errol

02.01.2022 Developing dogs for sale. I am pretty new to this part of the dog world. It started when my dog Charlie became injured. His hind left leg just cannot handle even mild training involving dynamic movement anymore; luckily we can still track. And for me dog training is more than a hobby; It gives me an outlet for my desire to train others, which I lost for a time after leaving a regular infantry unit in the Army. So when Charlie hurt himself, and I realised there's no way I co...uld keep pushing him, I didn't know what to do. So, I resolved to take on a puppy to train from scratch. A new challenge, as instead of trying to fix problem behaviours my dog Charlie came with like gun shyness, which I did fix, I took on a different challenge. I decided I would take on a puppy and go for broke - raise it to be a working dog, and if I failed find it a home that'll care for him and try again until I got it right. Through a lot of hard work, tonnes of mistakes (Jesus, you should see the terabyte of videos I have of his training), and an amazing bunch of friends here in Canberra helping me out, Dirk made it into the Australian Army. I never envisaged this for myself, raising and selling dogs, as it is hard to see them go. I am writing this as I drink a beer looking over some videos of my time with Dirk. But the reward is immense; seeing a puppy grow into a working dog is massively satisfying.
