25.01.2022 Prof Clive Hamiltons resignation letter from the Australian Climate Authority yesterday. The Climate Authority was set up as an independent statutory body unde...r the climate legislation passed under the Gillard/Greens deal in 2010 (the inclusion of such a body was one of Bob Browns key demands in supporting the Gillard minority government). It was set up in imitation of a similar (quite successful) body in the UK with a combination of scientists, ethicists, economists and policy wonks to give independent expert advice about emissions targets and related policy considerations (one of its founding members was Clive Hamilton, Professor of Public Ethics at CSU). According to the legislation, the government doesnt need to follow its recommendations, but must give a public explanation of why they are not. When the Abbott government came to power in 2013, they attempted to abolish the CA but were unable to get support in the Senate. Unlike the Climate Council (which they simply disbanded), the CA is a statutory body and so required legislation to remove. Or a willingness to engage in #posttruth politics. For a couple of years, the government simply ignored the CA (failing to follow the legislated necessity of giving a public explanation for doing so - or doing so in a minimal desultory manner), allowing members to resign in frustration without being replaced until only Prof Hamilton and climate scientist Prof David Karoly remained. Later, the Coalition stacked it with fossil friendly business figures. In its first report with its new composition, it failed to discharge its legislated duties and gave advice that was disconnected from the science. Profs Hamilton and Karoly published a strongly dissenting minority report that was itself dismissed by the government (see here: http://www.smh.com.au//david-karoly-and-clive-hamilton-why). Yesterday, Prof Hamilton resigned from the Climate Authority. His resignation letter is attached. #dirtyenergydirtypolitics #nonewcoal

22.01.2022 Its important that companies consider the implications and risks of Climate Change on their business and ensure their reports address these risks.

22.01.2022 So disappointing, but so expected from this Government.

21.01.2022 Something to think about next time you grab a take-away cuppa. Bringing your own cup is such a simple act, but has such a huge impact.

20.01.2022 Our land management is incredibly shortsighted and ignorant

18.01.2022 These turtles on Christmas Island have to battle a wall of debris to reach the ocean. #OurBluePlanet

18.01.2022 Damaging storms, blackouts and a blame game. Whats happening in South Australia?

14.01.2022 Australian businesses have so many opportunities when they take climate change serioulsy

14.01.2022 This is an example of terrible short-sightedness. You cant manage what you dont measure adn once these species are gone, weve lost them forever.

14.01.2022 Using certification marks that have been rigorously tested are an important step to avoiding greenwash and building a good reputation with your customers.

13.01.2022 Consumers and retailers need to understand what rights consumers have in respect to goods

12.01.2022 I am so glad that the ACCC is taking action against the misleading claims of wipes manufacturers. They do NOT degrade. They cause massive blockages in our sewer pipes.

11.01.2022 This is a great solution which will allow clean energy, using available technology and providing cheaper energy than we now have. The government must get on side to get this going now!

10.01.2022 thats ALOT of straws. Lets refuse them!

07.01.2022 Today is earth day happy earth day everyone

06.01.2022 I was so happy to find beautiful cards made out of recycled coffee cups when looking for a card for mums birthday. Thank you, Henderson. I hope to find more of these in the future. Its so good to see some of Australias billions of take away coffee cups being recycled rather than spending hundreds or thousands of years breaking down in landfill and the oceans.

05.01.2022 Its up to everyone to consider the impacts of what we buy and how we dispose of it. Companies and governments must take a leadership role if we want to stop the amount of waste generated.

04.01.2022 The Turnbull government has axed the clean energy target; not because it will lower power prices for the consumer and against the scientific evidence and evidence backed advice. Turnbull is playing politics with our lives and the future.

02.01.2022 Buy a bracelet or 2 to help clean up the oceans of plastic, or plant trees for Earth Day

02.01.2022 Turnbulls plan fails to address whats really killing the Reef - climate change. This is nothing more than a half billion dollar distraction.

02.01.2022 Stickers on fruit and veg might not seem like a big deal, but the energy from the plastic, energy and CO2 emissions created in production start to add up! These... laser markings are currently being trialled on organic sweet potatoes and avocados, and could be a great alternative to plastic stickers. See more
