21.01.2022 BEFORE AND AFTER! Swipe right When life throws you bent legs ..... Dr Pete throws you screws and wires! In just 5 weeks this little guy went from wind swept (the left fore severely bending in at the knee and the right fore bowing out at the knee) to having straight legs It’s hard to believe that this is the same foal! Angular limb deformities (ALD) are part of the developmental orthopaedic disease complex, and can be congenital or acquired. The congenital form is ...most common, and results from a disparity in the growth rate between the inside (medial) and outside (lateral) regions of the growth plate in the long bones. This results in a deviation of the limb from the normal conformation, and the limb turns in or turns out. If left unmanaged it can result in crushing of cuboidal bones (small bones of knees or hocks) or permanent conformational abnormalities. Carpal or knee ALDs, are frequent in the young foal, with valgus or outward deviation at the knee occurring most commonly. In mild cases, farriery and confinement can result in resolution. In more severe cases, surgical intervention is required to temporarily arrest growth on the rapidly growing side of the limb. This allows the slower side to catch up and resolve the abnormality; resulting in ideal limb conformation. Great work Dr Pete #neversaynever #foal #foalsofinstagram #angularlimbdeformity #equinevet #equinepractice #equineorthopedics #equinesurgeon #equinespecialist #ascotequinevets #equinehospital #diagnosticcentre #excellence #integrity #compassion

09.01.2022 It’s a NEW (well technically refurbished from human medicine) Olympus 180 scope system! The tower is compatible with our old scopes and also came with 2 new scopes - which were previously used for gastroscopy and colonoscopy in people Dr Annemarie is most excited with the small scope in the photo - it’s only 9mm in diameter and will be perfect for upper airway endoscopy in foals, minis and other small ponies. Image quality is excellent in both scopes and the system has an i...n built recording system - so we can record all our in hospital scopes from now on too Many thanks to Gavin @biovetaust for the great service! #earlychristmaspresent #biovetaust #equinemedicine #equinespecialist #equineendoscopy #olympusendoscope #equinepractice #veterinarian #ascotequinevets #equinevet #equinehospital #diagnosticcentre #excellence #integrity #compassion

09.01.2022 MEET KEYWAY Keyway presented to us with colic in early March this year. Despite initial intensive medical management of his colic, Keyway’s condition deteriorated slowly over a number of days in hospital and he subsequently required life saving surgery to correct a large colon displacement and sand impaction. Keyway’s recovery from surgery wasn’t straightforward. He spent three weeks in hospital during his surgical stay and suffered from a number of episodes of colic in th...e first couple of months post surgery. He also developed an infection along his surgical incision - which is a common complication post colic surgery in horses. Thankfully Keyway’s owners didn’t loose heart and stuck by him. We are happy to report that he is now back in action and doing what he loves best! Keyway and his owner Annie have recently won their first games competition since his return to good health. Thanks for sharing this great news @angeherzer - your love and persistence has certainly paid off.
