23.01.2022 The pantry was set up with the aim of providing a stop gap to provide food for those experiencing food insecurity in our community, by our community. Covid-19 has caused a dramatic increase in people experiencing food insecurity. Thus, an increased use of the pantry is evident. We ask that you please be considerate to the needs of others. We understand that is a difficult time but, please remember that the pantry items need to be shared. We are here to assist you but if you ...need further assistance please contact a relevant service provider. The pantry is on the property of the Ascot Vale Church of Christ. It is also the location of a private residence. Please respect this. It is NOT acceptable to steal plants from the garden at the residence! *Please remember to not take items just because they are free. Take them because you need them. Remember that there has been a dramatic increase in people experiencing food insecurity. *Please be respectful and thoughtful towards others. *Please be respectful to the Ascot Vale Church of Christ, the private residence, the gardens and surrounds. Only take what is offered through the pantry or library. 20.01.2022 Such a pleasant evening!

18.01.2022 Almost finished....ready to start....somewhere in between?

18.01.2022 Want to start your own little free pantry? Great! Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see them dotted around in every suburb! To make sure yours is a success, here are some things to consider: ... PANTRY LOCATION Find a spot with good foot traffic A local church or similar could work well Your front garden is also an option as long as it’s placed on your land Council approval is required for all other locations including the footpath PANTRY DESIGN Will it stay dry? Adding a little roof to a pre-made cupboard could help Consider the sun best to keep it in a shady spot Will it keep possums and the like from nibbling all the goodies? Is there any chance at all that it could tip over and injure someone? FOOD SAFETY Read up on food hygiene and food safety There are no specific rules, but someone getting sick is the last thing you want! Will you accept perishables? Or non-perishables only? How often will you be able to check contents and clean it out? If you’d like more info or assistance in planning and setting up your little free pantry, please get in touch. We’re happy to send out plans and other info to help you make sure it’s safe and successful!

15.01.2022 Good evening! Signage has just been added to the pantry so that the Reverse Advent Calendar drop of spot can be located. Your treasured donations can be dropped off during daylight hours (8am to 8pm) outside the residence located behind the pantry. Just walk back along the path and you will see a 'drop off here' notice on a window. In the event of inclement weather, the boxes can be left in the porch area. You are most welcome to start dropping off your donations. Thanks!!

14.01.2022 Ahhh....feet up and a rest after today's working bee, done within the covid restriction guidelines. There were a group of volunteers participating from the 'Dwell Collective', including the Pantry, Moonee Valley Sustainability, Moonee Valley Repair Cafe, Boomerang Bags Ascot Vale and the Ascot Vale Church of Christ. One of the purposes of today's bee was to complete the wicking beds behind the pantry. The aim of the garden is to supplement the pantry with fresh produce. We we...re able to use funds from the Federal Volunteers Grant to help us achieve this. Today we planted tomatoes, silverbeet, capsicum, egg plant, zucchini, cucumber, beetroot, red spring onion, basil, lettuce and rocket! A few finishing touches are still to occur but for now it's time for our produce to be given some time to grow! (No harvesting just yet, and please don't take the plants!) Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and energy today and for all of the pre-planning to make today possible!!!

10.01.2022 A report was released on 12th October by Foodbank Australia. The Hunger Report 2020 highlights food insecurity in the time of COVID-19. In 2019 15% of Australians experienced food insecurity. In 2020 food insecurity has risen to 31% due to the effects of the coronavirus. That is 3 in 10 people are experiencing food insecurity.... The overall demand on food charities has gone up 47%. It was interesting to note that only 61% (3 in 5) of these people in need will seek help. Their reason for not doing so is that they think that someone else is in greater need, they won't accept help or they are too embarrassed. I wanted to share their findings as I had wondered just how much of an increase the pantry is being used. As we offer anonymity, it's always an observational guesstimate... And it's been busy!! https://www.foodbank.org.au/research-reports/?state=vic

06.01.2022 The pantry blackboard has been updated. We are in need of tinned items. Anything from tuna, baked beans, corn, legumes, fruit and so on...... Much appreciated! Have as great weekend!!

05.01.2022 There's lots of fresh bread in the pantry this evening! Please help yourselves!!

03.01.2022 Now that there has been an easing of coronavirus restrictions, it also means that community projects can get started again. Work has been restarted on the wicking beds. There is more work yet to be done but some plants have been purchased in readiness.

01.01.2022 There's enough for everyone!!
