25.01.2022 One of our employees is working on shaving the world from blood cancer and has raised more than $1,500 as part of the Worlds Greatest Shave this month. ASC Engineer Gerry Higton has spent over two years growing his beard, but was happy to go under the clippers last week to raise funds to help accelerate blood cancer research, and reach the bold goal of zero lives lost to blood cancer by 2035. Shave Day took place in front of his cheering ASC colleagues during their lun...ch break at our Henderson site in WA. Well done Gerry! ASC is proud of the ongoing community spirit of our people, which is especially important during these uncertain times. Worldsgreatestshave.com.au

24.01.2022 Today we celebrate the commissioning at sea of HMAS Sydney, the third and final Hobart Class Destroyer built by ASC and the Alliance team. HMAS Sydney sailed from Osborne in South Australia earlier this year to undergo acceptance trials with the Royal Australian Navy, and todays commissioning marks the official end of yet another successful Australian shipbuilding project. It was also the first ever commissioning of an Australian warship at sea, off the coast of New South Wa...les. During the build, Sydney was the first ship to be upgraded to integrate the MH-60R Romeo Seahawk submarine hunting helicopter, and her Close-in Weapons Systems, making her Australias most lethal warship. ASC congratulates the ships inaugural crew on this very special day as Sydney officially becomes one of Her Majestys Australian Ships. Photo credit: Department of Defence

23.01.2022 ASCs number one priority is keeping Australias regionally superior Collins Class submarines available for service at beyond benchmark levels. That success is a team effort delivered by the Submarine Enterprise, made up of Defence, the Royal Australian Navy, ASC and other industry partners. So it was great to hear this statement from Defences General Manager Submarines, RADM Greg Sammut, highlighting ASCs high performance within the Enterprise.... As Australias dedicated submarine sustainment organisation, ASC is committed to the long term availability of Australias submarine fleet, as we move towards a two-class fleet in the 2030s.

23.01.2022 20 YEARS OF SUBMARINES AT ASC Brett O’Donoghue began his career at ASC 20 years ago, as a young engineering graduate working on the HMAS Rankin build in Osborne SA the sixth and final Collins class submarine to be built in Australia. A few years later, Brett relocated to ASC in WA which evolved from a couple of demountable huts on Garden Island where tammar wallabies would steal your lunch, to a world-class submarine maintenance facility employing over 400 submarine susta...iners in Henderson. Working alongside talented and supportive colleagues on a unique and technologically advanced platform means that 20 years later, Brett still finds his ASC career as rewarding as ever. ASC’s highly skilled workforce, and their performance delivering submarine availability to the Royal Australian Navy beyond international benchmarks, is unparalleled in Australia. This is in no small part due to ASC submarine experts like Brett congratulations on your 20 years of service!

It helps us create a more united Australia. #NRW2020 #InThisTogether2020

18.01.2022 ASC Engineer Dillan Wilson grew up on the beaches of Port Lincoln, dreaming of becoming an aerospace engineer. But it was complex vehicles that travelled under water, rather than above ground, which drew him later in life to become a graduate engineer for Australias dedicated submarine sustainer Adelaides ASC. Now hes on the cusp of a leading role in developing the next generation of submarine propulsion in Australia. Dillan has travelled to Melbourne to work for leading... Australian diesel engine distributor Penske - Australia and New Zealand. I think aircraft and submarines have a similar level of rigour in how they are put together and maintained thats whats exciting about working for ASC, said Dillan, aged 23. 17.01.2022 BLUE TREE SENDS POWERFUL MESSAGE ASC employees in Henderson, WA have planted a blue tree in our car park to help promote the Blue Tree Project. This aims to break the stigma attached to mental health issues, and encourage those difficult conversations with colleagues, family and friends. The blue tree was in place for Mental Health Week, where ASC’s very own house band, aptly named Sounds of Sonar played throughout the week at lunch times in the ASC canteen. Their music reminded us all that our mental wellbeing is just as important as physical safety in the workplace. #strongertogether #YouCanTalk

17.01.2022 The team at ASC is looking forward to the Submarine Institute of Australia Conference this week. We will be sharing our experience in developing and nurturing a world class sovereign supply chain that supports the sustainment of the Collins Class submarine fleet. 16.01.2022 As the nations dedicated submarine sustainment organisation, ASC is always seeking better ways to keep Australian submarines at sea. So it was a pleasure to welcome new research partners from Flinders University to our submarine deep maintenance operations in Adelaide recently. ASC is partnering with Flinders University, University of South Australia and Defence, to develop submarine coatings that repel the growth of algae and other marine life, making the submarine faster..., quieter and easier to maintain. The work will develop new electrically conducting carbon-based coatings to prevent the growth of unwanted organisms on marine surfaces. It is funded by South Australias Defence Innovation Partnership, under its $600,000 Collaborative Research Fund. More information can be found here - https://www.defenceinnovationpartnership.com//funding-to-d As a leader in the life-cycle Asset Management of submarines, ASC is experienced in non-destructive testing, innovative hull welding techniques and new anti-corrosion submarine coatings, and works with Defence Science and Technology (DST) and our local and international partners to support Collins Class submarine sustainment and maintenance. 16.01.2022 On Anzac Day we honour our submariners who have served our nation since Australias first submarines were commissioned in 1914. HMAS AE1 and AE2 were both deployed during World War I, but were lost during combat. HMAS AE1 was lost at sea with all hands off Papua New Guinea on 14 September 1914, and HMAS AE2 was the first Allied submarine to break through Turkish defences during the Dardanelles campaign, before sustaining damage and sinking on 30 April 1915. All hands were p...icked up by a Turkish torpedo boat and no lives were lost. A few days short of that anniversary and 105 years later, the Collins Class submarine fleet remains one of Australias most crucial strategic capabilities, and Australias submariners continue to serve our nation with distinction. ASC acknowledges them all with pride and gratitude. On Anzac Day we also recognise and honour former service men and women who now share their valuable and unique expertise as ASC employees. 16.01.2022 ASC’s Procurement Team is world class. ASC has been recognised with the Procurement Excellence Advanced Silver Award by the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS). CIPS Corporate certification is the only independent, procurement-specific assessment of its kind that benchmarks a company’s procurement function against #CIPS international standards.... In 2018, ASC became the first Australian defence company to receive the standard CIPS certification, after an extensive examination of its procurement policies and procedures. The CIPS Advanced Silver Award acknowledges the strategic alignment of the procurement function with the objectives of an organisation, and requires a procurement function to demonstrate the value it provides within the business. With hundreds of suppliers in a supply chain valued at several hundred millions dollars, ASC strives for international best practice in procurement for both its customer, the Royal Australian Navy, and the thousands of people employed in its supply chain. ASC’s supply chain continues to capture over 90 per cent Australian Industry Content (AIC) and this award demonstrates that not only ASC, but its extensive supply chain continue to meet the high standards expected in maintaining Australia’s frontline naval capabilities. #CIPS #procurement #supplychain

15.01.2022 SUBMARINE ON THE MOVE.. ASC recently welcomed the next submarine to dock at their world-class submarine maintenance facilities at Henderson in WA, for a six-month scheduled maintenance activity. HMAS Collins was lifted out of the water using the floating dock at the Australian Marine Complex, then moved across an internal road with a self-propelled transporter to rest on the ASCs hardstand. ... Manoeuvring an object that weighs more than 3,000 tonnes (3,000,000 kg) and is 77 metres long is no small task, but thanks to the skilled team at ASC it was completed safely and without a hitch, and on a perfect winters morning it was quite a sight! HMAS Collins has the distinction of being Australias first locally designed and built submarine, entering into service for the Royal Australian Navy 24 years ago in July 1996, as the first of six in the Collins Class submarine fleet.

15.01.2022 Collins Class submarines are 77m in length and weigh more than 3,000 tonnes, so when ASCs maintenance experts move them, it is slowly and with great care. Earlier this year HMAS Waller was gently shifted onto the ship-lift at ASCs deep maintenance operations at Osborne, South Australia, and lowered into the Port River. Watch as HMAS Waller re-entered the water for the first time in 18 months, as the submarine approached the finishing line of its two-year full cycle docking.... https://vimeo.com/424994038/4b0567410d.

14.01.2022 ASCs national effort to deliver the full cycle docking of another Collins class submarine is almost complete, as we prepare to hand HMAS Waller back to the Royal Australian Navy. This important milestone in ASCs through life support contract with Defence, ensures Waller is ready for its sail away by the RAN later this year. Completing a full cycle docking within the two year target takes a huge team effort. ASC and its partners in the Australian Submarine Enterprise, Defence and the RAN, continue to successfully deliver submarine availability at, or above, international benchmark performance.

14.01.2022 ASC CONGRATULATES OUTSTANDING SUBMARINERS As the training provider for the Royal Australian Navy Submarine Force, ASC congratulates the recipients of the 2020 Submarine Force Awards. 13.01.2022 ASC is proud to support diversity in the workplace to help break down the perception of gender-specific roles. Fourth year fabrication apprentice, Evyenia Kontakos, is proud of being the first woman qualified to weld submarine hull steel in Australia, since starting with ASC in 2017. As she explains in todays Defence Connect, Evyenia supports a TAFE SA program to train female high school teachers in welding 101, with the aim to recruit more female high school students into... the skilled trades in the years to come. I used to think it was male only back then and my female friends were the same, she said. Having more women teaching technical classes at high school can make a difference in attracting more girls to try it out. For young women, speaking to another women can be more comfortable. ASC recently welcomed 16 new apprentices to its submarine sustainment operations, in South Australia and Western Australia, bringing the number of apprentices at ASC to 57. They joined ASCs 1,300-strong workforce across two states, delivering submarine sustainment at beyond international benchmarks for the Royal Australian Navy. Thanks to the Naval Shipbuilding College for its support in this TAFE SA endeavour. https://www.defenceconnect.com.au//5815-tafe-sa-kick-start

13.01.2022 Its exciting times at the Osborne Naval Shipyard, with the lead vessel of the Offshore Patrol Vessel program literally taking shape, as the two largest ship mega blocks in the proud history of the shipyard were brought together for the first time. Built by Luerssen Australia and ASC, the two mega-blocks were manoeuvred together by experts from shipyard owner, Australian Naval Infrastructures (ANIs) Operations Team, leaving only millimetres between them. Minister for Defe...nce, Senator the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC welcomed the milestone. It is a source of great pride to see a unified purpose among industry partners Luerssen, ASC and ANI, with defence industry continuing to show resilience to deliver during these challenging times Minister Reynolds said. Work has commenced on the second OPV and, following its completion, the remaining 10 OPVs will be built in Western Australia. 12.01.2022 ASC continues to provide Australia with a world-class submarine capability, while at the same time we are carrying out this important work by ensuring the health of our employees is protected, in step with Government policies for the management of COVID-19. Like most Australian workplaces, we are changing the way we work, with some of our people working from home, and while many of us still need to work on-site - we are doing so with key changes to the workplace that decreases risk as much as possible. Where ever we are - on site, at home, in SA and in WA, everyone at ASC remains one team, working together to do what we do bestbut looking after each other at the same time. #Covid_19australia

11.01.2022 COLLINS MOVES OUT INTO THE SUN ASC has successfully completed the planned transfer of HMAS Collins outdoors from the Maintenance Support Tower to the hardstand, in another project milestone. HMAS Collins is undertaking six month’s scheduled maintenance at ASC in WA, and the move signifies the half way mark of the project.... The operation required two Prime Movers with modified gearing that allowed them to jointly tow the 3,000 tonnes of submarine and bogie train assembly along rail track inside the Henderson facility in WA. Moving outside helps the ASC team to carry out certain maintenance jobs with more ease, including work on the mast and periscope, as well as giving the hull a fresh coat of paint. HMAS Collins’ maintenance is expected to be completed and the submarine handed back to the Royal Australian Navy by Christmas.

"Three of the six submarines are consistently available for tasking as it attends to its most solemn duty the protection of the nation and our people." ASC supports the Governments commitment to delivering regionally superior submarines for decades to come. "As the Indo-Pacific region experiences a new era of strategic competition, our submarine fleet is vital in keeping Australians safe and our sea lanes open," he said. ASC thanks each of our valued workforce in helping to make this a reality, made up of sizeable workforces in both Western Australia and South Australia.

10.01.2022 A proud moment today for ASCs Adelaide-based submarine deep maintenance workforce, with the roll out of HMAS Waller, from the assembly hall. HMAS Waller is three-quarters through a two-year full cycle docking, and is set to be returned to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in the second half of 2020, following testing and trials. Waller was the third of six Collins Class submarines built by ASC in Adelaide. It was laid down by the then-Australian Submarine Corporation on 19 M...arch 1992, launched on 14 March 1997, and commissioned into the RAN on 10 July 1999. The Collins Class are widely regarded as regionally superior large, long range conventionally powered submarines, critical to Australias security. The fleet is about half-way through its service life, expected to be extended into the 2030s and 40s. ASC, as Australias dedicated submarine sustainer, is the prime contractor for Collins Class sustainment, life-extension and upgrade, employing more than 1,300 Australians in South Australia and Western Australia.

09.01.2022 SHEEAN TO RECEIVE POSTHUMOUS ASC applauds the decision to posthumously award WWII hero, Ordinary Seaman Edward Teddy Sheean, the Victoria Cross the first time this honour has ever been bestowed on a member of the Royal Australian Navy The Victoria Cross is Australias highest military honour and is being awarded to Teddy Sheean for bravery, after the 18 year old was killed when the minesweeper HMAS Armidale came under attack by Japanese aircraft on 1 December 1942 off the ...Timorese coast. Rather than abandon ship, he turned away from a life-boat, strapped himself to the aft Oerlikon Gun and fired at the attacking aircraft, destroying at least one and drawing the aircrafts fire away from his crewmates. Sheean was last seen, wounded and still firing the gun, as the ship sank beneath the waves. When ASC built the Collins Class submarine fleet between 1987 and 2003 the Royal Australian Navy recognised the bravery and self-sacrifice of Teddy Sheean by naming one of the boats in his honour. HMAS Sheean was commissioned on 23 February 2001 and is the only Australian naval vessel to be named after an ordinary sailor. Each of the six Collins Class submarines commemorates six members of the Navy who served their country with distinction. ASC salutes the late Ordinary Seaman Teddy Sheean and all who serve in the Royal Australian Navy https://www.abc.net.au//teddy-sheean-victoria-cro/12550210

07.01.2022 Mentoring Australia’s future engineers through the love of robots. When ASC engineers take time off from working on Australia’s regionally superior submarine fleet, some of them ‘hop’ on over to the Team RoboRoos - South Australia’s Student Robotics Club. The RoboRoos has members from 35 schools across Adelaide, and exists to excite young minds about STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), through a common interest robots!... Each year students compete in the international FIRST Robotics Competition, and some of ASC’s sharpest minds volunteer to assist the students during the ‘Feasibility Gate’ stage, where they present their concept designs and prototypes. Over six weeks, participants must design and build a functioning robot that can perform prescribed tasks, in competition with teams from around the world. Given ASC submarine experts are renowned for their problem solving skills (after all, finding engineering solutions is part of their daily working life) they are a natural fit to support and encourage these budding engineers. Thanks Chris, Nick and James, and good luck team!

07.01.2022 We celebrated an old naval tradition today with our shipbuilding partners Luerssen Australia, Defence and the Royal Australian Navy to mark the ceremonial keel laying of the second Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessel. According to the tradition, the keel-laying ceremony invites good luck in the construction of the ship and throughout her life. The ceremony involved one of ASCs youngest and oldest shipbuilders, Evyenia Kontakos, fourth year apprentice boilermaker and welder... and Larry Lavallee, OPV Block Construction Manager, in the Osborne Naval Shipyard placing a commemorative coin under the keel of the vessel, followed by Commodore Steve Tiffen wedging the coin under the keel. 04.01.2022 DIESEL ENGINE ADVENTURES Everything old is new again, with ASC apprentices re-purposing a former diesel engine from an Adelaide bank into a training platform to teach other budding submarine sustainers diesel engine basics. The engine was used for many years as a backup power source at a local bank branch. After ASC purchased the old engine, first and second year apprentices worked together on the training initiative that will now be embedded in ASC’s apprentice program. ... This was a great opportunity for apprentices to gain skills and confidence with diesel engines, before joining our Diesel Crew working on the much larger engines that power Collins Class submarines. ASC currently employs more than 50 apprentices who all receive world-class mentoring, training and work experience on the Collins Class program, one of Australia’s largest defence projects. Now that the engine is fully operational the next step is to strip it down, put it back together and get it up and running again!
