19.01.2022 Victorian members ASCTA today withdrew from the Victorian Aquatic Industry Alliance (VAIA) after participating fully over the past few weeks since its establishment. We advocated for an evidence based, scientifically informed and financially viable set of criteria for the reopening of pools in Victoria to be submitted to Government for the road map out. However, we considered that the position adopted by VAIA did not represent the needs of ASCTAs coach, teacher and swim scho...ol members. ASCTA is aligned with Swimming Victoria and co-signed a letter to VicSport regarding Return to Play which covered both community sport and learn to swim. Key elements of this proposal were a zero in water density for children under 18 and a 1 patron per 4m2 ratio for adults, both of which differed substantially from the position of VAIA. https://www.ascta.com//Letter-to-VicSport-re-return-to-pla http://www.swimaustralia.org.au//Letter-to-VicSport-re-ret

15.01.2022 Swimming pools are one of the safest environments during COVID. For all my swimming friends - Factual information is important. Engaged by Swimming Victoria, I ...was asked to fast-track a literature review on the relationship between Swimming Pools and COVID 19. With the ever-changing COVID-19 environment, I believe it is the first of its kind in Australia. Unfortunately, Swimming Pools and their operations are often a misunderstood environment. Through lack of knowledge and incorrect assumptions, decisions are being made that negatively impact a highly regulated industry. But more than anything, the review provided fascinating information. Things I am sure the industry has known all along. As international scientific evidence has acknowledged, pools are one of the safe environments. To read the full review, go to: https://bit.ly/32IUicb Lets get the Aquatic Industry swimming again, and get all swimming pools reopened. Whats your sport? 14.01.2022 Today we celebrate the birthday of the late great Terry Gathercole, seen in this image being tested by Forbes and Ursula Carlile. Terry, another Carlile coached... swimmer, was a dual Olympian who broke ten world records. Despite those magnificent achievements it is fair to say Terry’s influence on swimming exceeded what he achieved in the water. Terry coached Australia for 28 years, producing Olympic Gold medallists such as Ian Obrien and Bev Whitfield. He was also later the president of Australian Swimming. His funeral in 2001 was attended by a who’s who of world swimming and the Australian prime Minister John Howard. We don’t know what it is about November, but it is a stellar month for Australian swimming champions! #carlileswimming #terrygathercole #olypmian #forbescarlilec#ursulacarlile

09.01.2022 To anyone who doesnt think weve been doing anything, the truth is weve been flat out trying to get pools open and influence government with recommended details of reopening. Lots of industries have met with Government and provided industry plans etc and Government has not followed their advice. We are not the only industry this is happening to. We are currently a respected voice at the table and a public campaign is our last resort if Government does not act within the nex...t few days. Following our last town hall, the industry and government have broadly agreed on the following: Pools can open to a maximum of one patron per eight (8) square metre, or 40 patrons per pool (whichever is fewer), calculated against the pool surface area. Under 18s to be excluded from the maximum capacity ratio. Only active swimming participants and guardians of participants under the age of 18 are able to access the pool environment (excluding staff). Changing room facilities, spa pools, steam rooms and saunas to remain closed. For clarity, the above would allow most swim schools to reopen for all U18s without in water density quotients. Further, we are pushing hard for indoor pools to open under the above condition at Step Three. We have been involved with and/or coordinating multiple initiative to achieve this including (but by no means limited to): Meeting with a Federal senator; Letters to multiple ministers including the Minister for Sport; Discussions with the CEO of Sport and Recreation Victoria and his staff; Meetings with members of the opposition; Requests to multiple media for comment and coverage (all unsuccessful) I encourage everyone to try and get media coverage. If you are able to achieve this, key talking points that you could use include: 1. Pools are safe, get them open as soon as possible indoor and outdoor. 2. Learn to swim provides essential skills for like get kids back in the water 3. Squad swimming Kids have dreams to get to the Olympics and swimming is our most successful Olympic sport let them swim before we loose them we need squads back Supplementary information: 1. Its a week by week proposition for swim school owners, theyve had 100% reduction in income since March with exorbitant costs. We must support these local businesses who support our kids safety and development; 2. Drownings in VIC have gone up 300% in the past three months over the 5 year average; 3. Research supports indoor pools as being safer than outdoor pools regarding COVID-19; 4. Research shows that kids (u18) do not require social distancing exempt them from any density quotient (see attached); 5. LTS and squad swimming are highly managed and ready to open. I am very happy to provide extensive details on any of the above points including the research which will also be available on ASCTA Connects within the hour.

07.01.2022 Please support our Victorian Swim Coaches, Teachers and Swim Schools by signing this petition to Premier Andrews of Victoria. It seems swimming has been overlooked in the plan to open up. Swimming is not specifically mentioned in Sport & Rec and not in Indoor physical recreation facilities. Outdoor pools open in Step 2 but then there is no mention of pools after that, no mention of indoor pools and no mention of teaching swimming. Send this petition to all your families to sign. Our Victorian members need clarity of the restarting of their business and jobs. #WeALLSwimTogether

03.01.2022 An Open Letter to all members from Joanne Love - ASCTA Board Member. I have been taking note of the comments, and as many are aware, we have been fighting tooth and nail to support our industry, so that all pools can reopen as soon as possible. There is nothing more essential than saving a childs life. I am also aware many of you are working tirelessly to make our case known with local ministers and media. Thank you, and please dont stop. I understand your passion and your ...frustrations; we are all in this together. As you are aware, we are having mixed success getting all our science, our pleas and our request to reopen heard. Unfortunately, it isnt easy to provide information when the government representatives do not offer any feedback and then contradict information that they supply in meetings. Now is the time for us to come together, grow in strength and determination to be united, coordinated and focused in our fight to have pools reopened. We are all here for you, and as a Victorian ASCTA Board member, I suggest it is time for a coordinated social media blitz to highlight our case. ASCTA and Swim Australia will be initiating a post on Monday morning. We ask that you join us and add all tagged media contacts, Ministers plus any others you may know personally. Happy for you to contact me so I can hear your thoughts. Please contact me via DM, or call. Joanne Love - ASCTA Board Member
03.01.2022 From 5 December 2020, particular businesses will be required to maintain contact registers for WA Health Department COVID-19 contact tracing, if required. If COVID-19 is detected in the WA community, contact registers help to protect us all by enabling the WA Health Contact Team to quickly identify and assist anyone that may have been exposed to COVID-19. To assist, the WA Government has developed a free app, SafeWA, which will provide businesses with a digital contact regist...er system. SafeWA is an efficient and safe way to record patron and visitor contact details where they can check-in, using the app. Download the SafeWA app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store now.
