25.01.2022 Last Thursday the Colleges 80-year history was celebrated at a wonderful Mass presided over by the Archbishop of Brisbane, Mark Coleridge. The students moved i...n procession from Glenlyon bridge up through The Tower and into the Champagnat Centre in honour of all the past students, staff and parents who are part of the Marist College Ashgrove Family. A slideshow tribute to all those who contributed so generously to the building of this great school can be viewed here - https://youtu.be/VKosCnOAD_E
25.01.2022 Letter from Old Boy Fr John Hopkinson in Bolivia Dear Friends, At this time last year in our letter I mentioned that I was entering my 75th year and if I had been made a bishop then I should start preparing my letter of resignation to the Pope as required. However no such rule applies to us priests; it is presumed that we just keep going in what we are doing. Read More: https://ashgroveoldboys.com.au/letter-from-old-boy-fr-john/
25.01.2022 FIRST XV RUGBY'S 'BIG DANCE THIS SATURDAY SET TO WIND THE CLOCK BACK 31 YEARS The words Grand Final in AIC/TAS rugby have not been heard since 1989 when the No 1 Oval witnessed that epic win by Ashgrove over Lauries. Ash had already lost twice that season to an unassailable Black and Gold machine. But on that special day, when it really, really mattered, the forwards turned on the power and the backs tackled like never before. The stuff of legend. Surprisingly, the TAS the...n consigned the GF to the history books. Forever. Until now. Three decades on, Lauries are now given the opportunity to square the ledger. The undefeated winners of the two AIC pool groups, each carrying all that history, will clash in the Big Dance. The thumping handed out by Ashgrove in the trial match a month ago counts for absolutely nothing. A fair dinkum GF Old Boys - Next Saturday September 12. Where ? - just like 31 years ago - on Queenslands premier schoolboy oval in front of the John Eales grandstand. Covid bans means it can ONLY be live streamed - NO SPECTATORS - the link will be provided closer to game day. Best of Luck boys.

20.01.2022 FIRST XV SEASON TO OPEN WITH SEVEN SONS OF OLD BOYS TAKING THE FIELD It is one thing to run on to No 1 wearing the famous Gold jersey, but it is very special when Dad is an Old Boy, sitting in the stands with a tear in his eye. 17.01.2022 KENDALL FAMILY REFLECTS ASHGROVES COMMITMENT TO ANZAC SPIRIT Ashgrove and Rosalie Old Boys share a magnificent commitment to the service of our nation. We particularly remember the 15 Sons of Marist who made the ultimate sacrifice. That commitment is reflected in the service by three generations of the Kendall family. ... Geoff (1958) was the platoon commander of 10 Platoon D Company 6 RAR at the battle of Long Tan and was awarded the Medal of Gallantry. Geoff retired as a Major. Geoffs son, Steve (1985), graduated from RMC Duntroon to the Royal Australian Artillery, served 12 years and left as a Captain. Both men were proudly followed by Steves son, Carter (2016), who is currently serving with 4 Regiment RAA in Townsville in a Joint Fires Team. This ANZAC Day we give thanks for the sacrifice and dedication of all our Old Boys who have served and continue to do so. Lest We Forget !
17.01.2022 SONS OF OLD BOYS TO GRADUATE IN RECORD NUMBERS ! THE TRADITION MARCHES ON With all the turmoil 2020 produced, it will be a grand finish to see a record number of Sons of Old Boys graduate tomorrow and join their fathers (and four grand fathers) as part of the OBA - where the friendships last for life. Just ask John Mines (1948), the great man standing out front in our pre-COVID photo.... Tomorrow night all graduating Seniors, as new members, receive their treasured Old Boys' tie, their first ever Ashgrovian and the three violets of the Marist Brothers from the OBA President, Mr Steve McAuliffe. The OBA sends their heartfelt congratulations to the entire Senior cohort and look forward to the brilliant years ahead.

16.01.2022 This Anzac Day we express our eternal gratitude to all Old Boys of Marist Ashgrove and Marist Rosalie who have served, and are serving, our nation with such great distinction. We particularly remember our 15 courageous Marist sons who made the ultimate sacrifice to secure the freedoms we enjoy today. Lest we forget.
16.01.2022 OBA WELCOMES APPOINTMENT OF LIAM BEATTY (2008) AS NEW HEAD OF PRIMARY SCHOOL Old Boys, it is no secret in education circles as to the immense talent which Ashgrove’s primary school possesses. An absolute 'jewel in the crown' where young Ashgrovians commence their journey - educated in the Marist tradition of hard work, family and the pursuit of excellence. The OBA congratulates the College on maintaining those exceptional standards by the appointment of Old Boy, Liam Beatty ...(2008), as the new Head of Primary. The Old Boys also congratulate our member, Liam, on being gifted this most important of roles and look forward to the immense contribution he will make to the Ashgrove family. Viriliter Age !

15.01.2022 MARIST COLLEGE ASHGROVE ANNOUNCES THE PASSING OF OB FATHER PAUL JACKSON (1955) The entire Marist College Ashgrove Community has been saddened to learn of the passing in Pattna, India of our beloved Old Boy, Father Paul Jackson (1955). Father Paul, a Jesuit priest, dedicated his life to the poor and was a renowned scholar in the Islamic faith. He used that knowledge and his deep faith to build bridges between Christians and Muslims. Described as a peacemaker, Father Paul had... lived in India since 1961 pursuing a life of service to others. Father remained a loyal Ashgrovian and loved to hear of news from the College. We gave thanks for the life of Father Paul. May perpetual light shine upon him.
15.01.2022 OB STEVE MEEHAN (1983) DELIVERS BBC ULTIMATE GLORY AFTER 66 YEARS FIRST AND ONLY UNDEFEATED RUGBY PREMIERSHIP FINALLY ARRIVES Look out for flying boaters when driving down Moggill Road next week Old Boys.... We usually dont report on all things GPS but this has a very special Ashgrove connection. BBCs one and only First XV Rugby title came in 1954 - but had to be shared 4 ways. Looking to secure that elusive outright title, the brains trust over Toowong way played a master stroke by bringing in an Ashgrove man as the overall Director of Rugby - OB Steve Meehan (1983). Just as OB Dean Patterson (1981) had done for Terrace in their darkest days, Steve worked his magic to help bring that coveted GPS Crown to BBC in his very first year. The 66 year wait is finally over. And undefeated - just to add some icing to that premiership cake. Congratulations to Steve and to our OB BBC Colleagues on this incredible and wonderful achievement. One to absolutely savour.
14.01.2022 ASHGROVE FIRST XV HONOURS THE ROSA TRADITION For the last decade, playing for Marist College Ashgroves First XV has brought with it one other special honour - to take to the field to pay tribute to Ashgrove's older brother, Marist College Rosalie (Rosa). Absolutely ferocious and unforgiving competitors in the 1960s and 70s, the modern era brings with it a special recognition of the tradition of the two great Marist schools. For one memorable day only, the Ashgrove boys swa...p the Blue and Gold for the traditional Cerise and Blue of Rosa but with the Ashgrove crest. This year, under the watch of the great Cyprian pavilion named in honour of the mercurial Headmaster of both schools, the Marist Boys honoured the warriors of old by recording a stunning 45-7 victory over traditional rivals SLC. Breathtaking rugby. Just that something little bit special for Rosa. The Rosa and Ashgrove Old Boys thank Coach Brendan Kiernan (OB 1984) and his Marist boys for honouring our great traditions. Age Quod Agis. Whatever you do, do it whole heartedly and well.
13.01.2022 ASHGROVE REMEMBERS After World War 2, Brother Cyprian had the Memorial Gates commissioned on which were placed the names of all Old Boys who had served. Cyprian did so not only to honour those brave men but so that students could walk past the names of their older brothers each day and be reminded of their heroism and sacrifice. The Gates stand proudly today now honouring all Old Boys who have served. Notwithstanding the current difficult circumstances, the Old Boys Association thanks the current Headmaster Mr McLoughlin, Ms Mena McLean and the current student leaders for the honour and respect which has been shown to those great men on this ANZAC Day. Lest We forget.
12.01.2022 The Old Boys Salute the Great Rod Jarrett
11.01.2022 Dear Members of the Marist College Ashgrove family, Your prayers are asked for the repose of the soul of Mr Les Brogan who passed away on Saturday as a result of an accident. He was aged 90 years. Les was known as Brother Valerius when he was a Marist Brother and was headmaster of the college from 1959 to 1962. Eternal rest grant to Les I Lord and my perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen

11.01.2022 2020 TAKE THAT FINAL STEP TRANSITION TO OLD BOYS NOW COMPLETE Friday night’s graduation dinner saw that final step for the 2020 cohort from student to Old Boy - traditionally symbolised by the replacement of their well worn school tie with the brand new beautiful Old Boys tie (although still with some assistance from Mum).... A copy of the latest Ashgrovian is now also safely packed in the bag for some light reading during down time at Schoolies. Congratulation Boys and welcome to our wonderful, world wide Association of Old Boys. Ashgrovians for life ! Viriliter Age !
10.01.2022 BIG 5 READY TO ROAR AGAIN THIS SATURDAY 1989 GRAND FINAL COMES TO LIFE - 2.15 PM ON YOUTUBE There has never been a season like it. Nor will there be again.... Back in 1989, 'The Associated Schools' (TAS) had semi-finals, a preliminary final and a GF. Ashgrove had lost to Laurie's 8-3 in the regular season followed by another defeat 14-6 in the major semi-final. But a win over Iona in the preliminary final saw Ash return one more time to play that powerhouse Black and Gold machine in the Big Dance. SLC confidently expected not only a 3-0 whitewash but, far more importantly, to impart abject humiliation on their hated rivals. Perhaps a foregone conclusion. But that was Devery (c) and Muttukumaru (vc) leading them out; and Hoffman, the man with the golden boot; with Dixon, Wells and Lethbridge up front, and a couple of unknowns in the centres called Graham and some year 11 kid, Herbert. And PNGs Rosanowski, there to stand tall at the back one last time; and Fraser, as always, the key to the lineout. Yep. When it was absolutely all on the line, this XV were all Ashgrove men - bred a special way. And the rest, as they say, is history. https://youtu.be/lewfhRs1OOI: Old Boys 2.15 p.m. Saturday
05.01.2022 In yesterdays Courier Mail they listed Numbers 21 - 30 of the Reds rugbys golden era top 50 players between 1980 and 2000. Coming in at No. 25 is Ashgrove Old... Boy Anthony Herbert. While at Ashgrove Anthony played in the 1st XV team and then went on to play in the Australian schoolboys before representing Queensland and Australia. He was an outside centre and occasional fullback possessing a booming left foot kick, big-hitting defence and robust midfield running. Today you will find Anthony on the side of the rugby field at GPS Rugby Club where he is CEO. To view the full article please click here https://bit.ly/3efMNgC

02.01.2022 CHIEF JUDGE KERRY OBRIEN (1967) BRINGS CURTAIN DOWN ON MAGNIFICENT CAREER Australias longest serving current judicial officer (31 years), Chief Judge of Australias most highly regarded and efficient court, Former Acting Supreme Court Judge, Former President of the Childrens Court - Ashgrovian. In a farewell ceremony so packed the huge Banco Court in Brisbane required two overflow courts to meet the demand, representatives of the judiciary, the legal profession and the go...od folk of Queensland he served so well gathered in person and by live stream throughout the State to express their gratitude and to farewell retiring Chief Judge of the District Court and Old Boy, Kerry OBrien (1967). A true servant of the people who never lost his common touch. Accolades dont sit well with a man bred out of Ashgrove in the Marist tradition and known for his simplicity, modesty and humility - but we can make an exception for just one day. Old Boys, young and old, join with Donna, Matthew (2006), Michael (2007), Amelia and Emily in congratulating Kerry and wishing him the very best on his retirement.
02.01.2022 MARIST FAMILY SALUTES OUR HEROES ON REMEMBRANCE DAY A SPECIAL MEMORY FOR STJEPAN (RIC) MILOSEVIC The Marist Family give our eternal thanks for all 15 Sons of Marist Ashgrove and Marist Rosalie who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.... This year, we acknowledge a very special place at Yungaburra on the Atherton Tablelands where the magnificent ‘Avenue of Honour’ was built to honour those brave men who died in Afghanistan. Amongst them is Ashgrove’s beloved Ric Milosevic whose funeral was held at the College in 2012. May our Mother Mary and St Marcellin bless all of our special Marist Sons and may perpetual light shine upon them.
02.01.2022 Last week we had Old Boy Mick Todd (87) come and speak to our Business students. Mick spoke about being flexible and adaptable and when career planning how impo...rtant it is to have a plan A and B. Mick also mentored the Marist Men in Business group by providing advice to current students on their entrepreneurial strengths and challenges. These boys received one on one support and this will be an on-going into the future.
