10.01.2022 Coughs and Homeopathy Many coughs can often benefit from homeopathic remedies. A recent case involved a toddler with a bothersome barking cough of 3 weeks duration that was waking him and his parents frequently throughout the night. Rather than proceeding with the treatment proposed by the childs GP (antibiotics and steroids) the mother chose homeopathy as a low-risk alternative. Rather than suppressing symptoms, homeopathy works with the body to boost the natural healing r...esponse. After taking the toddlers case, a remedy was given that had an immediate benefit. In the first night the child woke just once with coughing. On the second and subsequent nights there was no more coughing. About four weeks later the child developed a mild cold and with it, the return of a barking cough. This time, the original homeopathic remedy failed to assist with the cough and the reason for this is at the heart of the homeopathic method. Although this cough sounded similar to the first, this cough was fundamentally different in one key aspect. While the first cough was worse in a warm room, the second cough was worse in the cold. This change in the nature of the cough necessitated a change in the homeopathic remedy. With more details taken, a second remedy was given and was again immediately beneficial. 01.01.2022 Why I love a good sceptic. On the weekend I met a self-confessed sceptic of homeopathy. I always welcome these encounters as it gives me the opportunity to explain some of the common misconceptions regarding homeopathy and to talk about the very biased NHMRC report that has so influenced Australian and other governments policy and consequently influenced the publics perception of homeopathy. I also welcome these encounters because perhaps my comments could be the catalyst f...or further investigation by the sceptic and even lead to a change from being a sceptic to becoming an advocate. After all, some of the greatest homeopaths in history began their medical careers as sceptics of homeopathy. One of these was Constantine Hering (1800-1880), a German physician who, while a student of medicine, was instructed to write a book to disprove the legitimacy of homeopathy. Hering may have been a sceptic, but he was a good sceptic so rather than repeat the doctrine and dogma of his University professors he thoroughly investigated homeopathy. He began by studying the work of the founder of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann, with whom he eventually met to discuss methods and cases. Hering also conducted his own trials and experiments with homeopathic remedies. When Hering injured his finger during a post-mortem examination the wound became inflamed and seriously infected. He refused the traditional treatment of the time amputation and instead turned to a homeopathic remedy, Arsenicum album, and his finger was saved. After this experience and from his prior extensive research, Hering was convinced of the efficacy of homeopathy and so he abandoned the book project and quit his University post. He went on to become one of the pioneers of homeopathy in the USA, establishing a homeopathic college, writing books, conducting provings on remedies and through his astute observation of the healing process, described what has become known as Herings Law of Cure. Constantine Hering is truly a legend of the homeopathic world! So yes, I welcome encounters with sceptics and critical thinkers. Particularly those with minds that are open to and prepared to accept evidence that may clash with mainstream ideas. We need good sceptics who will fully investigate the evidence, who will to do their own research (as Hering did) rather than following the prevailing attitudes and propaganda. Energetic, unbiased, open minded scepticism and critical thinking is a good thing for the world, while lazy, dogma-driven and perhaps fearful scepticism has never achieved anything of worth! So be a sceptic, by all means, but be a good sceptic and look at the evidence. And you never know, maybe one day youll be a world-famous homeopath like Constantine Hering!
