25.01.2022 Cleaning the grid out to keep the stock from walking over it.
25.01.2022 6 decks of steers off to our McKinly property.
24.01.2022 And finally the last 6 decks of both weaner heifers and steers are on their way to Moorooka Station.
22.01.2022 A few photos from this morning.
22.01.2022 Most of our cattle sales occur between the first round and second round muster, so this last month has been very full on for the men. While we women make sure things are running smoothly back at home, the men have been back and forth to our McKinlay property, mustering, drafting and trucking the cattle for sale. Heifers, old cows and bullocks. Alan has sent some great photos and videos of the last of the bullocks that were trucked out this morning
21.01.2022 WATER!!!!!!! measured the flow at over 500 gls per hour. They were going to go down 1 more length to see if they could get more. I had to leave them to come home to feed the calves. They had to shift the drilling rig about 2 ft from the original site as they had problems when they hit a tree root. It was still in the area that we felt the strong pull from the wires.
21.01.2022 Mustering at Ashover
20.01.2022 Boys are all off to our McKinlay property, Moorooka, with the last of this years weaners.
20.01.2022 The reason I posted about cattle rushes last night is because the cattle rushed here, in the homestead yards, last night. We heard the sudden rumble of hooves,... which sounded like the rumble of a truck driving past the house, so went down to check they were still there. There was far too much dust to see much of anything, though the outer gates were still secure and you could see cattle bunched up against them. This morning told a clearer story. The fresh weaners, brought in yesterday, were the ones that jumped and rushed, hitting the gates between them and the weaners that were in the larger enclosure. One gate was torn completely off its hinges and the is buckled. Anyone who knows Bob, will know that all gates are straight and even. These photos show the force behind a cattle rush. See more
19.01.2022 First round mustering finished with around 800 weaners in the homestead yards to be processed. The steers will be taken to our property at McKinlay where they will grow into Bullocks. Heifers will be sorted into replacement heifers and sale heifers which will also go to the McKinlay property as our Hughenden property doesnt have enough feed for them.
19.01.2022 The only positive for extra dry conditions is to be able to clean out and enlarge the water capacity of dams that have gone dry (or nearly gone dry). This is Roses Creek dam. It is now nearly double in size so bring on the rain!!!!!
18.01.2022 Due to the continued rain, the sudden drop in temperatures and a howling wind from the tropical low, the smaller and weaker cattle are dropping. We have had to put 3 down and could lose more tonight as the wind picks up again. These are some poddies and smaller weaners that we have been hand feeding. They are waiting for us every morning, but, with this rain event, they are too cold and weak to bring themselves in. Moorooka is going to be so far worse as it is black soil and the rain has been relentless. Even healthy cattle will bog and starve as no one can get to them in a vehicle. Only way will be a helicopter but it is currently too windy for them too.
17.01.2022 2nd week mustering. Weaners and old cows being delivered to the house yards.
16.01.2022 If you can't bear to see photos of our dead cattle, then don't watch this. We didn't post them, originally, as they were too distressing and emotionally, we were at an all time low. We lost around 300 head, mostly our sale cattle at Moorooka in the McKinlay shire, but also some breeders, a few weaners and a bull from Ashover and Barenya. After the first rain event, we were flooded here at Ashover, by ex tropical cyclone Trevor. We were luckier than a lot of others as our loss was small. Here is our story.
15.01.2022 The Lime Quarry has gone Solar!!!! No more starting and stopping the diesel generator which had to be done on an average of every 3 days, depending on the season. This was erected by our own talented men...... and it works
15.01.2022 More photos from Alan
15.01.2022 The men went out to check on things here at Ashover, yesterday. They went up the main road, over the Wills River causeway and worked their way back towards the... homesteads. The Wills at the house was too high for them to cross, when they got here,so they left the buggies on the other side and came back in the loader bucket. This morning, as the river was still a little too high for the buggies, John put the forks onto the loader and secured the buggies onto them with tie down straps and brought them back across, one at a time. 12.01.2022 2nd round muster is now underway at Ashover and the first of the weaners have been brought back to the homestead yards.
11.01.2022 They won't let you live this one down Bob.
10.01.2022 John is taking the last of the weaner steers and a few old cows off to Moorooka. Heifers next trip.
10.01.2022 When the man, who constantly tells the younger ones that there is no substitute for experience gets himself proper bogged. Lead by example Bob
10.01.2022 Another 6 decks of weaner steers on their way to our McKinly property, Moorooka.
09.01.2022 More photos taken by Alan.
09.01.2022 John drove the truck back to Cloncurry and Bobby jumped into it to drive it the rest of the way home..... Oh My Gosh what a speed freak and....oh crap... didnt John start off with 3 trailers.....lol
09.01.2022 Backlining and loading the last of the weaners. If you listen carefully, you hear the Boss sweet talking to me while he waits to count the weaners onto the truck. John took 6 decks of heifers to Moorooka yesterday and today he is taking the last of the 2019 weaners to their new home. He will drop the rear trailer off in Cloncurry where Cloncurry Constructions will load our new hay shed kit onto it for John to collect on his return through Cloncurry. Cloncurry Constructions will then come out here around mid November to put the shed up for us. We will no longer need to use our truck shed for hay storage..
09.01.2022 Trying to turn dust into water. Our Garden Creek area has only dams for water supply and this is not good in times of drought as they dry up while there is still available feed for the cattle. It seems to be an area of little underground water but we keep trying. Two bore sites have produced 50 gph and 75 gph. Neither is enough to water the cattle. One more site to try tomorrow.
08.01.2022 Went for a drive around Nettle Crk, one of our McKinlay properties today.
08.01.2022 Helicopters make the mustering so much easier.
07.01.2022 On the road again. No Bobby isnt driving the truck. John is the driver and this is his second trip to Moorooka. 6 decks weaners yesterday. 1 deck weaners, 4 decks of old cows and 1 deck of calves today and 6 decks weaners again tomorrow.
07.01.2022 I was asked to post some photos of the Speckle Parks. The calves are all by Teddy but he has damaged himself so he has been replaced by Bundy. Both Teddy and Bundy are Waratah Speckle Park Bulls. They were originally bought for my dairy cross herd that are used to feed any poddy calves but curiosity got the better of Bob and he has put them into the herd to see what the result is. So far we have 4 calves out of my girls and one in out of a brahman cross cow with rather large horns. All 5 calves have been naturally polled (born with no horns) Next month should see the results of Teddy in Birds Paddock.
06.01.2022 John has arrived home with 2 trailers of hay that will be needed for feeding weaners when we start mustering.
04.01.2022 This looks promising. I would like these for my girls please.....
02.01.2022 Our Garden Creek bore is now up and running. John, Jeff and Wade have done a terrific job with erecting the solar panels, putting in the pipeline and setting up the tank and trough.
02.01.2022 The dam over the river has gone dry so it is being cleaned out before the wet season.
01.01.2022 Drillers arrived today and started on the first site that Bob and I had divined.
