25.01.2022 Whats the Story? Its a Morning Glory one of the most amazing meteorological sights you can see, and the Gulf of Carpentaria is the only known location on th...e planet where they can be predicted and observed with regularity. Also known as a roll cloud, the Glory forms consistently but only in the early to mid-Spring, for a few months when the unique geography of the Gulf creates a collision of two sea breezes heading in opposite directions. This eerie dawn phenomenon can be up to 1-2km in height, can span up to 1000km in length and rolls through the sky at the speeds of up to 60kms! The local Indigenous population refer to the unusual clouds as kangólgi and believe their arrival is a positive indicator there will be flourishing birdlife. Head north to the Gulf soon if you want to see this magical cloud in all its splendour. #barracentre #karumba #exploretnq #holidayherethisyear #outbackqueensland #goodtogo #morningglory

21.01.2022 A Fintastic Result! Thank you to our wonderful guests who ranked us so highly we won a TripAdvisor Travelers Choice Award. We love meeting the people who travel... to Karumba and sharing the story of how the Gulf Barramundi Restocking Association began this incredible process of restocking the rivers of the Gulf with barramundi fingerlings. The progress from humble beginnings and the efforts of a few, have now evolved into the the iconic, multi-million dollar state of the art hatchery and interpretive centre we have now. 19.01.2022 Barra and Champagne Did you know there is a petition to ensure only Australian fish can be sold as barramundi? It's because 60 per cent of fish sold as barramun...di in Australia is actually imported Asian Seabass, and Aussie fishermen just aren't buying that. Similar to champagne, which can only be called champagne if its from the Champagne region in France, Aussies want the barramundi to have the same regard for its origin. And so another battle with the mighty barramundi begins. Here is the link to the petition if you are interested. https://www.change.org/p/australian-fish-names-committee-ba Happy BarraMonday! #barracentre #karumba #exploretnq #holidayherethisyear #outbackqueensland #goodtogo

09.01.2022 The residents of Karumba and Normanton exemplify many quintessential Australian characteristics: proud of their town and community, supportive and caring of eac...h other and hard working. The Governor-General and Mrs Hurley have enjoyed spending time with the communities over the last two days, listening to people’s stories including how they have coped with the challenges of 2020 and hearing about their plans for the future. Like anywhere there are challenges, but there is also optimism and a commitment to each other and to the community. 08.01.2022 Mary-Anne Langridge captured this gorgeous Morning Glory cloud over Sweers Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland earlier in the month. The 'morning glor...y' is a type of roll cloud and can be many hundreds of kilometres long. They're generally rare, however they occur reasonably consistently across the Gulf of Carpentaria from September to November, with several normally forming during this period. The cloud is usually formed, in the right conditions, by the interaction between sea breezes on both sides of Cape York Peninsula, which results in a line of cloud. 06.01.2022 Rivers for Romance The mature barramundi in the Gulf are counting down the days till the end of the dry season when these diminishing waterholes will flood with... life giving rain that carries them to the coast to spawn. 02.01.2022 Passion Fish? Amongst its other names, those who believe an Aboriginal folk tale can also call barramundi "passion fish" for its supposed aphrodisiacal attribut...es. The name arises from a dreamtime story from before there were fish in the sea. This was when two aboriginal lovers, forbidden to wed leapt into the ocean so they could be together forever. Here they became barramundi fish with the spines on their back representing the spears thrown at them during their escape. True love is never easy. Happy BarraMonday!
