25.01.2022 VIVA LOS VARGA! Ashwood Clubbies got home again last week on the back of some excellent spin bowling from Declan Varga and Anthony Papalia. With Burnley coasting at 3/159 it looked like Ashwood would be chasing plenty. Declan and Anthony got a wicket each before Declan wiped them out by picking up four more wickets, finishing with the amazing figures of 7 overs, 3 maidens, 5 wickets for 4 runs. Burnley eventually finished with 9/179 and with Dale Healy and Abhay Mehta both making 50 (ret.) and Jack Von fersen 39 not out, Ashwood chased them down with 7 wickets and four overs to spare. 25.01.2022 It's been a tough couple of months for all Australians, but for Dave and Nicole Gallacher it's been particularly difficult. Dave joined Ashwood Cricket Club last season. However in March, his wife Nicole suddenly collapsed at home with a bleed on her brain. Nicole was rushed to the Austin where she had emergency surgery. After 8 hours of surgery, Nicole and Dave tragically lost their baby boy Ned at 22 weeks.... Nicole then spent the next few weeks on life support, where she showed incredible resilience and improvement, despite two more complex procedures. Nicole has now been rehabilitating for the last two months, but has a long road ahead of her. If you're able to support Nicole and Dave, please donate through the link below. All funds will help them manage this incredibly difficult time, both from a financial and healthcare perspective. Our thoughts and prayers are with both Dave and Nicole during this period.

21.01.2022 Vale Dean Jones (1961-2020) With a heavy heart Ashwood Cricket Club would like to express their deepest condolences to the Jones family at Dean’s sudden passing. Jones was one of Australia’s most popular cricketers and changed the way one-day cricket was played. A boyhood hero to many, he grew up just around the corner from Essex heights and trained in the local nets. If you grew up in that era you were always Deano in games of backyard cricket . ...Continue reading

20.01.2022 Good morning all we would like to share this Monash council community initiative , feel free to pass on to anyone who maybe interested. Regards Mark Edmonds President ACC... Sport and Recreation Integrated Practical Placement (IPP) program The Integrated Practical Placement (IPP) program is a partnership between Holmesglen Institute, WISE Employment and workplace partner, the City of Monash (Active Monash). The partnership builds on the success of the IPP programs at Royal Melbourne and Royal Children’s Hospital. The program provides a unique opportunity for young people living with disability, to bridge the gap between the classroom, studying Certificate I in Work Education (Sport) and finding work. Active Monash plays a pivotal role in the program by bringing the classroom to the workplace instead of on campus, students experience working life and develop on the job skills and industry qualifications needed to gain meaningful and sustainable employment in the sport, recreation and leisure industry. Students who complete the supported placement model have shown promising results, with research papers showing success rates of gaining mainstream employment up to 80%. We are excited to be collaborating with Holmesglen Institute and WISE Employment for the 2021 program commencing in February. For the sport, recreation and leisure industry this will be the first of its kind in Australia to provide targeted work related skills to young people with a disability. It will truly begin a revolution into how the industry trains, develops and recruits in an inclusive manner. Students will achieve qualifications during the year to kick-start their sport and recreation career including: Certificate I in Work Education AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Lifesaving Victoria Pool Lifeguard Award Senior First Aid and CPR Sports-based coaching and umpiring courses (TBC) Enrolments for the 2021 program open now and close November 27, 2020 If you have a young school leaver or young job seeker up to 21 years of age with a disability, and who would benefit from participating in the program, or just would like to know more, get in touch with: Shannon Stabb- Area Manager Inclusion [email protected] Matthew Haanappel- Coordinator Diversity and Inclusion [email protected] Thank you, Alexa Image Alexa Lloyd Sports Club Liaison and Development Officer Email: [email protected] Phone: 03 9518 3583 Mobile:

19.01.2022 Rock N Roll Meets Ashwood Clubbies Ashwood’s own rockstar and Nathan Bracken lookalike, Jake Murphy, had a day out with the ball playing in our Club XI last Saturday. Ashwood scored a more than respectable 6/203, with some notable Ashwood return’s in Fuji and the ultimate senior Edmonds, Mick, both making 50s. Dale Healy failed miserably with the bat and only made 47.... In reply Glen Waverley were travelling worryingly well at 3/159 with plenty of overs in hand when the ball was thrown to Jake. Jake got a double breakthrough, Mick got another and it was game on. Jake then cleaned up three more for his first ever Michelle Pfeiffer and Ashwood won by 25 runs.

13.01.2022 Dear Ashwood Cricket Club community, This weekend will see the first games of the cricket season 2020/21 and I think it’s worth celebrating how exciting this is considering where we were only 4 weeks ago. This season the club is running 18 teams juniors and seniors combined and a blasters program for 5-9 year olds , including our all girls team season 2.0! It has tested a very hard working committees and all our volunteers to the brink however we would like to think this w...eekend will make it all worth it. I think this year is proof it truly does take a village to run a sporting club ! So I want to make a special thank you to those who have made it possible especially the committee of the juniors and seniors club. The committee below working along side others has worked tirelessly over winter in the background on what seemed an extremely daunting prospect only a few months ago to launch this season and deserve our biggest thanks. I can’t list everything they have done but it’s been incredible - Matt Clayton Jim Curnow Suzannah Hawtin Cameron Flint Chris Harris Ari Morton Tim Pape Mitch Newton Mike Sest Peter Touloupis Along side committee has been sub committees , the dozens of coaches , assistants, team managers , parents , players , our amazing loyal sponsors who we will be showcasing during season , covid officers , cleaners, line markers , pavilion preppers. I can’t list everyone but its phenomenal. So make sure you do your bit , don’t forget to thank our volunteers , before we comment or critique just think and reflect that cricket is a privilege this season and it’s taken a huge collective effort and we try our best. Please enjoy the season whether you win, lose , draw , in sunshine or rain embrace it. I hope players , kids and parents can reconnect with old friends . As soon as we can operate the social club again we will keep you posted . Thank you Mark Edmonds President ACC Your club - My club - Our club

05.01.2022 It's been a massive weekend for the Ashwood Cricket Club. We started the season with U13s on Friday night at Jingella, in a close fought game that our boys managed to win with some excellent bowling. The First XI began their first game of the season with a 1 minute's silence in tribute to Dean Jones, and then followed this up with a brilliant win featuring a great knock of 73no from Anthony Edmonds. The new scoreboard is proving to be very popular, thanks to Matt Clayton for all his efforts to get it working so we can all enjoy it. Sunday teams, both junior and senior, endured some rain early on but then a gorgeous late morning and afternoon of cricket in the sunshine. We are looking forward to many more weekends of cricket to come this season!

01.01.2022 With a brilliant first day of spring , we shut the door on a long winter , I hope we may have turned a small corner in 2020. With our focus firmly on all things cricket and the broader role sport plays in communities and the positive impacts on your mental health. I wanted to try and give some hope and a general update on cricket season in a very fluid environment and the possible return to train and play models for cricket. What is clear is if we do get a cricket season und...eraway it will be a real privilege and one to enjoy and we will need everyone’s assistance. Behind the scenes Committee is working tirelessly attending webinars from Cricket Victoria / ECA/ MCA /ISEC to plan for a modified season ahead. It’s a lot of information but we will be taking advice and following best practice models outlined, also reaching out to friends in the uk for advice that have just successfully commenced their season. Summary of key items : - season start obviously delayed - BEST CASE scenario would be Nov start - Latest possible start is February 2021 - All games to be one day format - sanitising and social distance measures - ball management - reduced training groups - limited gatherings off field - covid officers required for all teams The aim of this season will be enjoyment and simplifying things , also anyone impacted financially this year please touch base and we will ensure no one misses out . I would like to leave you with some photos of Essex heights centre square preparation and say thanks to the Monash council for their support also. 01.01.2022 The legendary Sir Donald Bradman made an unparalleled 6,996 Test runs at an average of 99.94 to go with his 28,067 first class run at an average of 95.14. He captained Australia in the 1948 invincibles tour where they went undefeated , survived bodyline wearing no helmet on uncovered pitches. Practiced with a golf ball and a stump to fine tune his skill and was a player with no peers. Now we know Don Bradman never met our own Dale Healy but when he spoke these words below it...’s as if he was describing the man we all know simply as The athlete . Young Dale had a Bradmanesque season last year in our club xi averaging 99.25 which is pretty remarkable and whilst his training methods were unorthodox batting only with a stump and a golf ball followed by 25 laps of the oval they have certainly paid dividends. Some say after he was dismissed for 4 in last years semi final not wanting to average more than the great man they could hear him whisper ...that was for you don . Now no pressure to perform this season Dale but we are expecting another average of 99, anything less would be slightly disappointing. In all seriousness though as a club though we want to send a shout out to Dale , his son Cameron who are fantastic contributors and people to have involved , they will be playing in the club xi led by Abhay Mehta who will be making their season debut tomorrow. It was launched last season and enjoyed by all in a great atmosphere which is what it is about . Have a great day ! Mark Edmonds President ACC

01.01.2022 The Day Stocksy and Gogs Went Big Back in February 1995, in an away game against Camberwell, Ashwood’s First XI scored a club record 4/359. Our top team was playing Wright Shield (ECA’s second highest grade and two levels above the competition we will be playing this season) and was captained by former North Melbourne district player Neil McDonald. The team that day included some notable Ashwood names such as Tim Flintoff, Mike Ronchi, Steve Woodward, John Kerry, Al Walker, R...ohan Sale and of course DR Sheean and PW Stocks. Ashwood batted first and got off to a solid if unspectacular start, losing our first wicket, that of John Kerry for 12, with the score at 33. Gogs joined Stocksy and the pain started for the Camberwell bowlers. 184 runs later it took a run out for Camberwell to take a wicket, Stocksy gone for 103 made with 11 fours and one five. Gogs didn’t let the run out bother him and went on to complete his century too, finishing on 108 with six fours and five sixes. Two of those sixes came from the first over bowled by McDonnell, that will dampen your enthusiasm for bowling. Tim Flintoff (61 no) and Ryan Christie (35 no) finished the innings off with the then still teenage Ryan hitting the opening bowler Hannett for three consecutive fours. The bowlers did the job the following week with Camberwell being bowled out for 89 with Walker and Woodward taking three wickets each. 270 runs must be very close to the biggest win Ashwood has ever had in the First XI. Unfortunately our poor form before Christmas saw us miss the finals by a whisker despite winning nearly every game in the last half of the season. Definitely a missed opportunity because had we got there we would have given it an almighty shake. Questions remain. How big would Stocksy have gone if Gogs didn’t selfishly run him out?* Would Stocksy still have made a century at all without those four overthrows? Can Gogs make a comeback and score the 301 more runs he needs to pass Uncle Ivan as Ashwood’s all time leading run scorer? Were you there on the day? What do you remember? Author’s note - 184 runs is not our highest First XI partnership, that belongs to the 224 between Dale Wilkinson and Jeff Orchard in 2006/07 and not even close to the 337* in the Third XI in 1966/67 between George Saynor and Bob Munn. The Ashwood website now has all the updated player records under the history tab. http://ashwood.vic.cricket.com.au/ *Gogs didn’t really run him out, Stocksy admitted to me it was his own fault.

01.01.2022 The U10 and U11 competitions are non-competitive and introduce the kids to hard ball cricket with pads, gloves and helmets. Matches take place on Saturday or Sunday mornings and are of 20 overs per side (around 2 hours). The pitch is reduced in length and everyone bats, bowls and fields. Even if you are out you get to keep batting!
