18.01.2022 Innovation is at the heart of all our youth-initiatives. Last week over two-big days, the AEF partnered with the Department of Education in Western Australia to deliver the inaugural STEMing From Asia, Digital Youth Summit. Welcoming schools from across the state, this online immersive summit aimed to develop participants' understanding of issues and opportunities emerging within South-East Asia, namely, China, South Korea, Japan, and Australia. Presented with the provoc...ation to address an emerging issue or opportunity, participants were supported to collaboratively create/re-imagine STEM solutions. As part of the Digital Youth Summit, participants had the opportunity to engage with distinguished guests including Joel Chackungal, CEO at Perdix Aero, Laurene Colin, Development Manager, Robogals Global, Gus Minto-Cowcher, Systems & Networks Administrator, Greenpeace, Dylan Sanusi-Goh, Solutions Engineer, Innovation Central Sydney and Tunnel Technology Cadet, NSW Transport; and Dr Tracey Steinrucken, Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Plant Pathology and Biological Control, CSIRO. With the knowledge and feedback from these inspiring innovators, students were guided to collaborate as they developed and refined their solutions. Team ideas included a youth suicide prevention help-line app, a domestic violence Bluetooth alarm signal, an e-waste recycling scheme, emergency services drones, and 3D printed meat substitutes. Events like this provide students and their schools with a great opportunity to develop a deeper awareness and understanding of global issues as well as an opportunity to put these skills into practice to better appreciate what it means to be an active local and global citizen. They offer students the chance to connect what they learn in class with future education and career pathways, ultimately preparing them to take advantage of the global opportunities that are increasingly part of their world. It requires educators to utilise a combination of the curriculum, context, and communicatio...n. However, the challenges go deeper, with issues raised last year highlighting the ‘politicisation of teaching Chinese language in Australian classrooms today".
