25.01.2022 Warmth, innovation and good conversation We don't know about you, but we absolutely love sitting by the fire during these colder months. Watch this space for something exciting we have in the works!

24.01.2022 For our Fireside Chats event coming up on the 8th July we’re revealing our 4 panellists this week! We’re super excited to have Jay Ooi (founder of Shoes Off Podcast) join us on our first-ever panel event Jay has over 6 years in broadcast television experience, as well as years of freelance video production work telling personal stories for big and small brands. An avid listener of podcasts for over 10 years, Shoes Off is Jay’s first foray into the audio-only world. With a... successful season one exploring things from the difference between the way Chinese people use names vs white culture in Australia, to the origins of the term Asia and how we use it today, there are plenty more topics and issues to explore in season 2 and beyond. Growing up in Australia, I always had this sense that being Asian meant that I was never quite fully Australian and that I was a little bit of a second-class citizen. But when you grow up somewhere your whole life, you just kind of accept it as normal - I didn't know any better. I shied away from my Asian heritage because being Asian wasn't cool, because being Asian wasn't white. I want to change that. Register for our first Fireside chats event: https://www.facebook.com/events/264558351486847/ You can find out more about the Shoes Off podcast below: https://www.shoesoff.net/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shoesoffau/

19.01.2022 Hey everyone! We hope you're all keeping well and staying healthy. Tomorrow is R U OK? Day, our national reminder to ask our loved ones how they're doing and, are they OK? In 2020, the R U OK goal is knowing how to act or what to say after asking that initial question, and during these unprecedented times, it's so important for all of us to band together and check-in with the ones we care about. Check out the great resources on the R U OK website below.... https://www.ruok.org.au/join-r-u-ok-day We hope you're all doing OK and are working to have an event for you very soon (revolving around mental health!)

15.01.2022 Meet the faces behind The Asian Australian Project, and get to know what motivates and inspires us! Events Guru Angela Zhao shares her passion for communication, creativity and culture: "I joined the Asian Australian Project as I wanted to help make a difference and to raise awareness about the complexities of being Asian Australian. Growing up, I have found myself torn between two very different worlds when navigating my personal identity and my role in wider society. As a r...esult I wanted to create a community among Asian-Australians, where they felt understood and could connect with others with shared experiences. Hailing from a communications background, I am passionate about diversifying Asian-Australian representation in the media and creative industries, creating opportunities that improve accessibility to education and certain career paths and working to make a more egalitarian society for tomorrow. Since joining as AAP as an Events Associate then Events Director (AAP) in November, I have been honoured to help run multiple events for our member base and look forward to meeting you all!" 11.01.2022 Also joining us on our first panel is Dr Samantha Lin! Register and attend the event for a chance to have a coffee with one of our panellists: https://www.facebook.com/events/264558351486847/ Dr Samantha Lin is the principal and founder of the tuition school Shakespeare Academy, and leader of Asian Australian book club - Crazies Reading Asian , where she is committed to spreading literary love to the next generation. Her passion for writing and literature has also led to he...r becoming the lead writer on Australian iOS game series Regency Love and for her to publish her first book Lady Lavender. Growing up and attending a selective high school in Sydney, I was always interested in reading and writing but I knew I was lacking in my English studies at school and didn’t know where to get help. During my second semester of university, I took a first-year English class and started teaching myself how to write essays, and to understand the intricacies of grammar, from which I discovered my passion for studying English. This drove me to get a Master in the Arts (MA) from Durham University in England and a full scholarship to do a PhD in Shakespeare Studies. After I got my PhD, I thought back to my childhood and how much I would have benefited from some direction when I was younger. So I decided to return to Sydney, and started Shakespeare Academy which is, to my knowledge, the first Asian-run tuition centre focused on English literature. Crazies Reading Asians (https://www.facebook.com/groups/473887420063556/): a book club for reading the works of Asian writers. 09.01.2022 We're keen to hear from Shona Yoonsuh at our Fireside Chats event, just a week away! Attend the event for a chance to have a coffee with one of our panellists: https://www.facebook.com/events/264558351486847/... Shona Yang is a Korean-Australian freelance writer based in Sydney. Her primary focus is the Asian-Australian experience, shining a light on voices that are often marginalised, and sharing her passion for human rights on her blog shonasays.com. Shona champions minority voices as a contributor on SBS, Moonrise and more. Currently, Shona works as a Content Manager for a national charity, with background experience managing content channels for various start-ups in Sydney. "In terms of my journey in Asian-Australian initiatives, it stemmed from my experience feeling alienated in the Australian media, and wanting to champion voices and stories just like mine. I'd also like to emphasise the importance of collaboration in our community. " Check out more of Shona’s work below: Shona Says Twitter: https://twitter.com/shonaasays Blog: https://www.shonasays.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shonasays/

06.01.2022 For something nice and chill next weekend we’re hosting an online movie night! A fun hangout to get to know more people in the community We’ll be updating you guys with more info soon so make sure you respond to the event below!

05.01.2022 Love seeing a Fireside Chats friendship blossom! One of our panellists from our last event, Shona, in the virtual 'coffee catchup' with Sasha. Members of the audience who'd attended the event live were able to have the opportunity to be matched up with one of the panellists for a 'coffee catch-up'. Although with the current climate, it was a virtual meetup instead! But still glad this inter-state friendship was able to form. Be on the lookout for our next one coming up very..., very soon! See the link below for a recording of the event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYVnyUodUfo&feature=youtu.be

04.01.2022 Meet the faces behind the Asian Australian Project, and get to know what motivates and inspires us! Here's outgoing Vice President Ryan, sharing his story about his journey when he joined us for a brief period while in Sydney. During his year at AAP, he helped set a strong foundation for the organisation, and his infectious energy has empowered the team to grow to the strength it has today "Throughout my life, I’ve sworn up and down that I’d never live anywhere besides S...outhern California. I’ve always built my identity on the people that I’ve grown up with, and SoCal was where those people, my people, were. Eventually, however, life throws you curveballs that force you to challenge your convictions, and when a couple of curveballs came my way in 2018, I decided I needed a change of scenery. Last year, my company offered me a position in our new Sydney office to build out the Business Development team, and that was the ticket I’d been waiting for. I was in the airport within a week, but it wasn’t until I was boarding the flight that I remembered that, on the other side, I’d need to find my people again. AAP helped me find a home away from home in a different hemisphere. The shared experiences we have as Asians growing up in western culture-dominated areas bind us to a collective motherland - one that’s neither the countries we hail from, nor the countries that the generations before us came from. There's a safe haven in a community of people who shoulder your burdens better, and revel in your victories more happily because they’ve been where you’ve been." Ryan Paul Cheng

04.01.2022 Our 4th panellist for our upcoming Fireside Chats is Mr. Pravin Silva! Pravin is a project coordinator at Asialink, a leading Australian initiative that builds cultural, civic, and business ties between Australia and the wider Asian region. As a Sri Lankan-Australian, he plays a key role in organising the Asian-Australian Leadership Summit (AALS), a national summit that addresses the shortage of Asian-Australians in senior leadership positions; also known as the 'bamboo cei...ling'. The summit is incredibly significant, as, based off data from the most recent census and the Australian National University, Asian-Australians account for 12% of the Australian population, yet just 2.4% of senior leadership in Australia. A graduate of the University of Melbourne, Pravin presently continues to coordinate various projects as part of Asialink's diplomacy team. We look forward to joining him next Wednesday to hear about his personal and professional journey as an Asian-Australian! You can find out more about these initiatives here. If you were wondering what these insights might look like, here’s a throwback to our last Fireside Chats when Jay Ooi (from the Shoes Off Podcast) covered the importance of Asian-Australian experiences being visible in media and how that can validate our identity by seeing someone like us in the mainstream! We can’t wait to hear about what our panel has to say... about mental health this coming Tuesday so if you want in on this thought-provoking discussion, register at the link below! https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/fireside-chats-you-me-and-m #asianaustralian #asianaustralianstories
