24.01.2022 Looking for a new Internet provider? Want to see how yours is performing and thinking of changing. The ACMA has released their report - it's worth a scan. Optus has the dubious title of the most outages by a long shot. Worth remembering.... 18.01.2022 Your Laptop or PC is running like a dog a very very sick dog not one running after the neighbour's kids like they were to be his last meal. What can you do? a) If someone else paid for it, ask them to replace it b) If you paid for it or the budget is tight, then try these... All of the things I am about to suggest work reliably, BUT. having a backup of your stuff will ensure you don’t lose it if something goes toes up. If you are doing this to a laptop please please plug in the power supply/charger thingy too. 1. Download and install CCleaner also from Prirform. When you run it, there is a menu down the left hand side, choose ‘Registry’ then choose ‘Scan for Issues’ and it will find the stuff left behind from updates of old programs (like Java, Acrobat Reader, Chrome) that has the potential to slow a machine down. When the scan finishes, a. Click on ‘Fix Selected items’. b. When asked say ‘Yes’ to the Backup (there’s that word again) and c. Save it to your My Documents folder d. Then click on ‘Fix All Selected Issues’ e. Depending on how many ‘bugs’ it finds it may take a few seconds or warrant you going and having a coffee break. f. Restart the machine. 2. If your machine is running out of space you may want to run the ‘Cleaner’ option in CCleaner. It will get rid of more stuff but some find it annoying when it deletes things like their most recently used list of files in Word. 3. Download and install Defraggler from Piriform. This does some housekeeping on your machine. Files stored on your machine ( Windows files and your files) get themselves in all sort of a mess and this program tidies them up. The end result is an improvement in speed for the old dog. If it’s the first time anything like this has been done, it will take forever, so check your email, update Facebook and Instagram, then start it and go on a short holiday seriously. 4. Download and install MalwareBytes free edition. This finds malware, advertising hijacks, internet hijacks and removes them. Run the scan and follow the prompts. You will then probably look at your Antivirus with suspicion at the things it has missed.

12.01.2022 Have you got the program CCleaner on your PC/Laptop/Tablet? if you have make sure the version isn't 5.33.6162. How do you Check ? In the left-hand pane click on Options look around you'll see something like v5.32.6129 The version mentioned above was hijacked and has malicious code in it. If your version is the bad one, go to the piriform website and download an updated copy and install it http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download?upgrade

07.01.2022 A recent email hijack has snared 711 million email addresses and passwords. Many of them are genuine business credentials because the email used to trap victims was quite good. There is a large number of Australian Government ones too so chances are most will have been ‘pawned’ Please 1.Click on the link https://haveibeenpwned.com (open a browser and type the address if the link doesn’t work exactly as spelt in the link) 2.Enter your email address used at your place of ...employment 3.If it reports no bad news then you’re ok 4. If it says yes, then change any passwords where you use that email address as your login e.g. Facebook, the bank.. See more

03.01.2022 When you get your new PC / Laptop / Netbook / Litebook, it will have at least one of these : 1. A set of Windows Installation CD's/DVD's. 2. A program to create the Windows Install Disks if they aren't provided. 3. License certificates for any programs like Microsoft Office that you purchased with the machine.... Losing these is one huge pain. Loose them and you have to pay for them again. If you want to see how little fun it can be, call Microsoft licensing and tell them you've lost your license certificate for Office - you'll be horrified at the response... If your machine ever needs to be rebuilt, the DVD's and license certificates are needed to bring your machine back to life. Fail to, and these are the expenses you can expect. - Windows Install DVD $75.00 US ($98 Australian) - MS Office Home & Business $298 Australian What should you Do? 1. When you take delivery of your shiny new Laptop/PC write the serial number of it on every bit of paper/CD Case/License Certificate/Manual/Booklet that came with it 2. If it doesn't have DVD's use the program provided by the manufacturer to create them. You know the one, its the thing that annoys you every time you start and says "You havent created your installation disks. Want to now??" 3. Put them all in a A4 sized envelope or Big Zip Lock bag then into a safe place. This way if you ever need to replace a hard disk in your machine, or reinstall windows after malware mishap, you wont have the added expense of paying again for what you already own.
01.01.2022 Internet Down - a few things to try before ending up in the on-hold zone for half your adult years on the phone. 1. Restart your machine 1st. 2. Restart the little black box that connects you to the internet. 3. Record details of any lights lit on your modem - support should ask you this.... 4. Grab a coffee/magazine/book to help pass the wait time away. See more
