12.01.2022 What is behind my face mask? It's a question that many of us are asking in these crazy #covid times we find ourselves in. It's a question that is especially relevant for children - and adults too - who have difficulties connecting facial expression, emotion, tone of voice, body language and gesture. And then, of course, there's the issue of masks muffling speech and making speech discrimination even more difficult for those with auditory processing and hearing deficits. Mas...ks make the process of communication more challenging, effortful and exhausting for everyone but especially for those with speech, language, pragmatic and hearing issues. This product from ELSA support has many useful applications. Check it out along with the vast range of other ELSA Support products. https://www.elsa-support.co.uk//what-is-behind-my-face-ma/ #COVID #socialemotionalskills #askaspeechpathologist See more

11.01.2022 For those of you who missed out on joining Dr Hollis Scarborough in her entertaining and informative Q&A zoom session yesterday - or if you want to hear it again - and again - here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83tfzOFpBak

09.01.2022 Long, complicated sentences are hard enough to understand but when they can be interpreted more than one way, then they're downright confusing. This example from today's newspaper is a perfect example of how sentence complexity can inadvertently warp the meaning of a sentence. It makes a good case for keeping sentences short and simple - even for journalists! #EnglishIsTricky #readingcomprehension #whatdoesitmean #mistakeshappen #semantics #askaspeechpathologist

03.01.2022 'We thought anything that could give us more information about how our students are progressing was worth doing,' says Sandra Martin, Principal at Kingswood South Public School in western Sydney. 'We can use it to see where our children are at, and that can help our teachers plan.' She's talking about the Year 1 Phonics Check. Her school is one of 567 schools in NSW that have signed up run the phonics screening test in coming weeks. The Australian Government, through its Lit...eracy Hub, has just released this year's version of the phonics check. For the first time, parents will have access to the phonics check so they can use it at home with their own children. This is very timely for families here in Victoria who have just gone back to stage 4 #COVID19 lockdown and at-home schooling. I will post the link to the Literacy Hub's Phonics Check for Families in the comments below. #yearonephonicscheck #PhonicsCheck #phonicsscreener #phonics #literacy #teachthemtoread #askaspeechpathologist See more
