14.01.2022 Its that time of year again. Time to put in those last minute bulb orders in for spring. Its also time to lift the bulbs you have had in your garden, divide them by separating healthy bulbs and then replanting after adding a complete fertiliser and lots of organic matter. Bulbs generally need lifting and dividing every 3-4 years to keep them healthy and flowering. Then you will end up with a nice spring display like this one here.

14.01.2022 This is a common and seasonal problem on all citrus trees called citrus leaf miner. It has been made worse by heat, lots of rain and so lots of new growth is produced which the little miner loves. The management is prune off affected parts, spray with an oil based product like pest oil and keep the plant healthy. It won't kill the plant but will affect growth and fruiting. Any other citrus problems? ask me here.

08.01.2022 WHAT TO DO IN THE GARDEN IN SEPTEMBER. Improve your soil with organic matter, manure, compost. Mulch everywhere in preparation for summer. Fertilise everything with slow release or complete plant food.... Re-pot indoor plants to rejuvenate them. Don’t forget the fertiliser. Green manure crops can be planted now in vegetable beds you are resting. These can then be turned in as fertiliser. Eg chick peas or any of the pea family. Protect new vegetable plantings from damage. Hessian, shadecloth to keep the wind off them. Divide rhubarb and artichoke. Keep moisture consistent in the soil. Mulch will help but keep watering consistent. An hour slow soaking once a week is better than 5 minutes every day. Seaweed regularly everything. Watch for pests-aphids on the new growth on roses and citrus Citrus leaf miner will be around soon. Watch for the signs, curling leaves, white lines on leaves, yellowing leaves. The treatment is pruning and white oil. Sow lawn seed to fill bare patches in lawns. Top dress in October. Hand weed bindii See more

04.01.2022 Autumn tones of sweet gum, Liquidambar styraciflua and wisteria.

03.01.2022 G A R D E N A L E R T ! This is my early July warning, it is now time to start getting on top of bindii now before it becomes a summer problem.Particularly no...w is the time to start spraying those small bind in the lawn. If you don’t, it will flower and produce those annoying prickles that will attack your feet in summer. The only option after August is to hand remove it. While you are at it, fill in those bare patches with some soil and sprinkle with grass seed which you can buy from the nursery. Keep it damp and in 10 days you will have grass. Don’t say I didn’t warn you! Act now before its too late.

02.01.2022 These are some photos from the Alfred Nicholas gardens in The Dandenongs near Melbourne. Well worth a visit along with some other very nice gardens and plenty of great nurseries in the area.

02.01.2022 These beautiful, rich autumn tones belong to the ornamental pear. One of the best small autumn coloured trees for cool climates or coastal.

01.01.2022 Free mulch for my bird's nest fern, thanks to my maple and wisteria.
