20.01.2022 Irreversible damage: Is a TUNNEL under the Blue Mountains the solution to traffic woes? WHAT are your thoughts? The SMH reports: "The upgrade of the highway through the Blue Mountains has hit a speed bump as local politicians and residents condemn the state governments proposal for a bypass around Blackheath.... The NSW government is spending $2.5 billion to upgrade the Great Western Highway between Katoomba and Lithgow and provide two lanes each way. The Blue Mountains Labor Mayor Mark Greenhill said plans to duplicate the highway will make it "far more dangerous in our view" and affect the quality of life for residents. Blue Mountains City Council last month called on the state government to abandon plans to duplicate the highway because of "grave concerns" about the destruction of native bushland, acquisition of homes and impacts on towns. Regional Roads Minister Paul Toole said last year that the cost of building a tunnel under the Blue Mountains should be examined to provide a fast link between Penrith and Lithgow. Tech billionaire Elon Musk suggested on social media last year that a tunnel would cost about $1 billion." Mikel Alonso, the head of transportation at professional services company GHD, said that was "a much lower cost than what is probably achievable using current technology" FULL story: https://www.smh.com.au//irreversible-damage-is-a-tunnel-un

12.01.2022 FEATURED LOOKOUT ~ Mount Blackheath. This is a lookout thats off the normal tourist trail and is well worth a visit. Mount Blackheath Lookout has views to the north and west over the Kanimbla Valley. Its a great spot for a picnic. The track to the lookout is dirt, so drive to the conditions. Its a popular spot for hang gliders and parasails with a modern metal launch available. ... Recently a new carpark, toilet, improved paths, and upgraded lookout have been added with work continuing. 11.01.2022 Another one for your BUCKET LIST ~ Jackson Park ~ Prime Ministers Corridor of Oaks, Faulconbridge. The corridor of oak trees has been planted at this place by each Prime Minister of Australia since Federation or a close family member. Joseph Jackson (18741961) MLA represented the state Electoral district of Nepean for 33 years. He donated the land on which Jackson Park sits to the people of the Blue Mountains in 1933 for use as a public park. At that time Jackson owned the ...former home of Sir Henry Parkes and was an ardent admirer of his. He conceived the idea of an avenue of oak trees to be planted by all the Prime Ministers of Australia or their nearest surviving relative.[1] He hoped that the avenue, growing opposite the Parkes home, would become a national memorial. Planting commenced in 1934. There are currently 25 oaks in the Corridor of Oaks. The park contains not only oaks but statues and park benches and is a common stop for a picnic. PICNIC: This is a wonderful spot for a picnic, but bring your own blanket as there are no picnic tables. Its great for travellers and even better for locals. PLAYGROUND: Opposite the park is a great playground. Just take car with kids, as it is across a fairly busy road. 360 VIRTUAL TOUR: Experience the Corridor of Oaks before you travel there. Use your finger or mouse to scroll around the images. TIP: Make small movements or itll get too confusing. :) CLICK HERE 360*: https://askroz.news/Corridor-of-Oaks-360-VR MORE info: https://www.askroz.com.au//prime-ministers-corridor-of-oaks ACCESS: W3W: https://w3w.co/smidge.drills.undulation HISTORY: https://www.bluemountainsgazette.com.au//looking-back-at-/ LOVE LOCAL: Find out more about how you can love Faulconbridge at: https://www.bmcc.nsw.gov.au//faulconbridge-linden-and-wood #lovelocal #lovelocalbluemountains #LoveNSW #faulconbridge #bluemountains #bluemtsaus #bluemountainscitycouncil #bluemountainsbusiness #arbmllfaulconbridge #corridorofoaks #faulconbridge #360VR #BlueMountains360VR #JacksonPark

05.01.2022 Volunteers plant thousands of native trees to feed sanctuary koalas after Blue Mountains bushfires The ABC reports: "Volunteers are planting about 5,000 trees in the Blue Mountains to help feed koalas at a sanctuary after critical food sources were burnt by the summer blazes. Australian Ecosystems Foundation spokesperson Allison Garoza said the volunteers were creating a wildlife corridor between two nature reserves.... Ms Garoza said the project would revegetate an area of donated farmland, near Lithgow in central western New South Wales, with various eucalyptus species. The trees will benefit native wildlife and also be suitable to feed koalas undergoing rehabilitation programs at the nearby Secret Creek Sanctuary. "The diet of the koalas is quite restrictive, there are only a few species of trees that theyll feed on," Ms Garoza said." 01.01.2022 This SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN for Sunday ~ New life in burnt gardens. The Gazette reports: The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens in Blackheath lost several hundred plants in the fires which swept through just before Christmas. But thanks to some government grants, plus generous community donations and the efforts of dozens of volunteers, to date more than 200have been planted to replace them. Happily, some which burnt have resprouted.... The gardens are at their flowering peak in October and November, although there is something in bloom virtually all year. Usually, the Lodge is open for Devonshire teas in spring but COVID-19 has stopped that. But the gardens themselves will be open, as they are 365 days a year. Entry is by donation of $5 per person (there is a donation tin near the carpark).
