15.01.2022 MAJOR UPGRADE FOR NO.1 SPORTSGROUND BEGINS Affectionately known as No.1 to most of us, this sportsground plays an important part in our City's history and futur...e. Situated within the 20 hectare National Park, one of the largest and oldest sportsgrounds and reserves, it was built on land previously owned by the Australian Agricultural Company, which from 1865 until the early 1900s was leased by the Newcastle Racing Club as the site of the city’s original racecourse. Designed by City engineer JF Shine in 1921, with its playing oval replicating the size of the Sydney Cricket Ground, it was originally named National Sports Ground. The original two-storey timber grandstand was completed in October 1921 and could accommodate between 200 and 300 people, with dressing rooms, stores and locker rooms in the lower level. Officially opened on 16 September 1922, with City of Newcastle changing its name two years later to Newcastle Sports Ground. In 1989 the Newcastle Earthquake caused major structural damage to the original timber grandstand, which resulted in it being almost completely reconstructed with concrete stands, which remain today. This was the last significant upgrade to take place at the ground. No.1 Sportsground has played host to top level sporting events including international fixtures covering all codes of football, hockey and cricket. But it's been more than a decade since the most recent international level match when the Australian women’s cricket team defeated South Africa in March 2009 during the group stages of the ICC Women’s World Cup. The last first class cricket match played at the ground was in February 2015, when Western Australia beat NSW by seven wickets in their Sheffield Shield clash. Other codes have also made the most of No.1 Sportsground over the years, including a rugby union clash between New South Wales and New Zealand in 1935, while the Newcastle rugby league team defeated Great Britain 23-18 in front of 22,750 fans in 1962. We've celebrated other occasions in the ground too such as Anzac Day in 1946 and a Schools Jubilee and Pageant in 1951 that saw 6,000 school children form a living map of Australia in the centre of the field (pictured), and Scottish pop-rock icons Simple Minds headlined the Newcastle 500 Supercars concert at the ground in 2018. They typically discount townhomes because of the stairs. However after listening to the market and also working closely with architects and town planners. We are seeing many more designs really tailored to the downsizer and having the dual living rooms one downstairs and one upstairs and then also the main bedroom and ensuite ...downstairs. The only reason that owner would need to go upstairs is when they have either their grandkids or friends or family over. It gives them that extra space upstairs. Right now in the current market that’s the perfect design and not every site will work with this design due to space and land etc. However I highly advise if it can be designed to that spec. 01.01.2022 Tender awarded for Newcastle Ocean Baths pool upgrade Work on the much-loved Newcastle Ocean Baths pool upgrade is set to begin in the new year, according to co...uncil. Following an official tender process, with GHD being named as the principal design consultant, Stage 1 will soon get underway. The slated transformation is a staged project that will begin with the restoration of the pool and its promenades, while consultation and assessments continue for the upper concourse and pavilion. City of Newcastle has committed to fully-fund the renewal of the baths, with the $9.5 million proceeds from the sale of three council-owned buildings, including the Frederick Ash Building, directed towards the venture. Additional money will also come from City of Newcastle. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said GHD was primed to complete final site investigations before developing initial options and concept designs for the pools and promenade for community feedback. Engagement with the Newcastle Ocean Baths Community Reference Group and broader public is an important aspect of revitalising this iconic community asset, she explained. Our discussions to date have provided an insight into what the community values most about the pools, such as retaining the iconic boardwalk and improving accessibility. This feedback will help inform the upcoming design process, with initial concepts to be provided to the Newcastle Ocean Baths Community Reference Group for feedback. This will be followed by a detailed design process, which is expected to be completed by April 2021, with construction works scheduled to begin in the new financial year following further community consultation. Stage 2 of the project will address the renewal of the pavilions and surrounding upper level public domain space. A multi-criteria needs analysis is expected to be undertaken on the site to guide conversations with the community and ensure the upgrade meets the needs of future generations. Newcastle Ocean Baths is treasured by our community, which is why we are moving ahead with the upgrades to the pools while continuing conversations with residents to ensure they have input into the improvements to the iconic pavilions, Cr Nelmes said.
