21.01.2022 JMRS article: New Zealand radiation therapists’ perceptions of peer group supervision as a tool to reduce burnout symptoms in the clinical setting Dungey, Gay (proxy) (contact); Neser, Hazel; Sim, Dalice https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jmrs.398 @gay.dungey Peer group supervision (PGS) may address patient-related stressors for RTs with 1-5 years of experience, they feel patient-related matters can be discussed openly during PGS which is helping to improve their practice and reduce their stress. In contrast more experienced staff are using PGS as a ‘professional support group’, rather than ‘peer supervision’, as a strategy for managing the organisational stressors associated with burnout.

21.01.2022 Survey: University of Oslo - Radiographers' assessment of imaging referrals Justification of radiological examinations has become an increasingly important issue, acknowledged by radiation protection authorities and professional societies. At the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) a research project is currently being carried out, focusing on radiographers’ role in the justification process. This PhD-project was developed along with a master's course on Justification an...d skill mix, both in cooperation with University College Dublin (UCD) and approved by IAEA, EFRS and ISRRT. So far these initiatives have resulted in a research HUB at ECR 2019, focusing on the radiographers’ competency in assessing referrals (see article: Radiographers' assessment of referrals for CT and MR imaging using a web-based data collection tool - https://login.digitalsend.com.au/t/j-l-alihkdl-jyhkkjjdiu-m/), and a forthcoming pre-conference workshop at the ISRRT conference, postponed from 2020 to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This survey aims to gain information on how radiographers can contribute to appropriate imaging. The distribution of this survey to radiographers worldwide has been facilitated by ISRRT and will close on 1 January 2021. TAKE THE SURVEY: https://nettskjema.no/a/134266#/page/1 See more

17.01.2022 JMRS article: Full field digital mammography: the 30 % rule and influences on visualisation of the pectoral major muscle on the craniocaudal view of the breast Spuur, Kelly (proxy) (contact); Strohbach, Julia; Wilkinson, Jenny https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jmrs.404 @kelly.spuur The 30% rule was first documented 26 years ago, in the film screen era, by Bassett et al., establishing that the pectoralis major muscle (PMM) was able to be visualised in 32% of cr...aniocaudal breast images. Subsequently a wide range of visualisation rates (11-48%) have been cited. This study reports that the 30% rule is not being achieved in the Australian digital screening setting. The overall visualisation rate of the PMM was 24.5% with only 14.1% of images depicting the PMM bilaterally. No significant associations between pectoralis major muscle visualisation and age, compressed breast thickness, or breast size were identified. See more

10.01.2022 #NotAllHeroesWearStethoscopes | Beatrice Tanner Why did you go into Radiation Therapy (RT)? I knew I wanted to work in health care, I loved all things science and I wanted a job with purpose and drive. I fell into RT by accident. I was lucky enough to spend a day in an RT clinic before I applied for UNI and I was still unsure. I was fortunate when I started UNI, I was surrounded by like minded people and had phenomenal teachers. I now work in the department where I first lea...rnt about RT as a year 12 student. Why do you enjoy your profession? RT is a beautiful blend of patient care and science. I am constantly using my brain, up and coming technology and oodles of physics. However, It is also an incredibly rewarding job to be involved in someone’s cancer treatment, as it is often a time when people are in their most vulnerable state. I consider my job a pleasure but also the utmost privilege. What inspires you? I’m inspired by strength and resilience. I see this in my patients and am often amazed with the courage they hold. I also see these qualities in colleagues and other MRS health professionals who dedicate themselves to their patients, careers, excellence and bettering patient outcomes. Talk us through a day in your job. A normal day could mean a few different things and often involves working alongside multiple other Radiotherapists, working closely with our Radiation Oncologists and many other health professionals. We are either operating CT scanners, Linear accelerators, treatment planning systems or Brachytherapy units. 10.01.2022 JMRS article: Comparison of Radiation Doses between Diagnostic Full-Field Digital Mammography (FFDM) and Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT): A Clinical Study Asbeutah, Akram (proxy) (contact); AlMajran, Abdullah; Brindabhan, ajit; Asbeutah, Saad https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jmrs.405 @K_University @akram.asbeutah ... @akram-asbeutah-3231b166 There are some concerns about increasing the radiation dose among women undergoing both full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT). In our study we found that the entrance skin dose (ESD) and total average glandular dose (AGD) are lower in DBT than FFDM techniques. This offers opportunities for the implementation of DBT in the breast cancer detection. " See more

04.01.2022 #NotAllHeroesWearStethoscopes | Laura Adamson Why did you go into medical radiation science? I decided to become a Radiation Therapist due to the close impact Cancer had on my family. I lost my Dad as a teenager to this disease and my younger brother is a childhood cancer survivor. I had closely seen the impacts both outcomes can have on a family and decided I wanted to be a healthcare professional working in an area of Oncology that would bring joy, care and excellence in...patient treatments. When looking into options I know that radiation therapy was the role for me. Why do you enjoy your profession? I enjoy being part of such a multidisciplinary team that makes up radiation oncology and the professional relationship we create with our patients as we come alongside patients and their family during this part of their treatment journey. I love people and its a role that is full of people interaction. What inspires you? I'm inspired by people who show excellence in the way they carry themself, and I believe that every decision and conversation I have, is driven by the want to see the best care for my patients. Talk us through a day in your job. A normal day in my job depends on where I am rostered to work, on a planning day you would see me in front of a computer working out the best possible way to produce a treatment plan for a patient. On a treatment day, you would see me working alongside another therapist treating many different patients across the day providing safe and accurate radiation treatment. On a paperwork or study day, you would see me working on project work around quality improvement projects or working on different quality assurance (QA) checks as there are many QA checkpoints within the patient pathway prior and during treatment. #ProudToBeARadiationTherapist @LauraAdamson See more
