25.01.2022 It was great to chat to doctors in training at Bankstown Hospital today. Thanks to all who came by + thanks to those who signed our petition to stop the wage freeze - we collected 100 signatures! Tomorrow we will be at Fresh+ Cafe at Campbelltown Hospital from 7.30am -12. Come say hi and grab a free coffee

25.01.2022 MAITLAND HOSPITAL WILL LOSE MORE DOCTORS WITHOUT URGENT ACTION The announcement that the Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP) have withdrawn accreditation and pulled their Registrars from Maitland Hospital unfortunately comes as no surprise for our Union. In September we urgently intervened at the Hospital when a group of Registrars sought Union help, and we uncovered a litany of issues including unsafe hours, inadequate supervision, support & training, and underpay...ments. We urge management to act now to implement our plan for change at the hospital or they risk losing even more doctors. MEDIA RELEASE: https://bit.ly/3lKCANV

25.01.2022 This year the ASMOF team managed over 1600 matters, and we are proud of the successes that we have been able to achieve for members, including improved conditions during COVID-19, safer working hours and rosters for doctors in training, improved office space, advocacy on parental leave and countless individual wins. We are proud to be your union, and proud to stand up for you and for our public health system. Have a safe and restful festive season!

25.01.2022 Yesterday we spoke with Assistants in Medicine at Wollongong Hospital about the importance of joining your Union during their orientation. As a Union, we are parties to your Award and have special legal rights to represent you. A warm welcome to all our AIM members. AIMs can join ASMOF for a one-off fee of $15 at https://doctorsintraining.org.au/join-asmof/

25.01.2022 The Victorian Government has now revealed that 80% of the almost 2700 healthcare workers who contracted COVID-19 in Victorias second wave did so at work. Governments need to ensure hospitals are stocked with adequate PPE, there is appropriate training around the use of PPE and fit testing of face masks is mandatory for all front-line healthcare workers across the country.

24.01.2022 2020 MEDICAL TRAINING SURVEY (MTS) OPENS TODAY! We encourage all our DiT members to complete this survey. The MTS is a confidential way to get national, comparative, profession-wide data to strengthen medical training in Australia.

24.01.2022 Our last meeting will be held TONIGHT and we are opening it up to all doctors in training! We encourage you to bring your colleagues along too- they don't have to be Union members to join.

23.01.2022 It was great to have a coffee with doctors in training at Campbelltown Hospital yesterday. Thanks to all who came by and had a chat about your rights at work! THIS MORNING we will be at High St Society at Prince of Wales and Sydney Childrens Hospital from 7.30am -12pm. Come say and hi and grab a free coffee!

23.01.2022 We were at Nepean Hospital this morning offering a free coffee to Doctors in Training. A warm welcome to our new members and thank you to all the DiTs who stopped by to discuss your rights at work and our fight against the wage freeze! Tomorrow we will be offering a free coffee to DiTs at St. George Hospital. Come and see us at Culture Bean Caf from 7:30am to 12pm If you are a DiT at Sutherland Hospital, we will be at The Street Canteen this Wednesday from 7:30am to 12pm. Share this post with your colleagues and come along for a free coffee!

22.01.2022 We had a great day at RPA on Monday meeting members and talking to RMOs and Registrars about what we do. We have lots of live issues at the moment including the wage freeze we continue to fight in the Industrial Relations Commission, RMO vs registrar pay and classification, staffing shortages, pay issues and of course COVID 19 and workplace safety. Its more important than ever to be part of your Union. Visit doctorsintraining.org.au to find out more or send us a message.

22.01.2022 This is appalling behaviour from the NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard. It is unacceptable to mock and undermine questions on the availability of PPE, which is critical for the safety of doctors, health workers and the broader community. This pandemic requires leadership. People want clarity on our supply of PPE and face masks and it is the governments job to provide answers.

22.01.2022 After meeting with ASMOF, Westmead has now agreed to replace broken and damaged pagers, without any cost to Medical Officers.

21.01.2022 1 in 5 doctors and nurses report limited access to face masks. This is unacceptable. There is no excuse for inconsistent supplies and inadequate PPE. ASMOF is pushing to ensure that doctors dont just get access to adequate PPE, but that the PPE is properly fit tested to ensure it works to keep you safe.

21.01.2022 We will be at Nepean on Monday morning 7:30am-12:00pm. DiTs can visit us at Mandesa Florist Cafe and get a free coffee voucher! We have lots of live issues at the moment including the wage freeze, RMO vs registrar pay and classification, staffing shortages, pay issues and of course COVID 19 and workplace safety. Come grab a coffee and ask us any questions you might have about your Award, pay and entitlements. ... We have multiple coffee visits over the next two weeks so keep up to date with your emails and socials for locations and times.

21.01.2022 If there was any doubt in your mind that a public sector wage freeze was a bad idea, there wouldnt be after hearing from our experts at last nights forum. Thanks to all those who joined us and if you missed it, a recording of the meeting is now online here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd_0-DXs4cU

21.01.2022 Thanks to all the doctors at Wollongong who came by to grab a coffee and meet our team. Our coffee mornings are a great way for us to learn more about local workplace issues and provide advice and support to our members. The Coffee Mornings started as an initiative for R U OK Day, but we have decided to keep them rolling with events coming up in Blacktown, Liverpool and Campbelltown. Keep an eye on this page for details!

20.01.2022 Because we are a union, we are the only organisation with the legal right to enforce your workplace entitlements, for example ensuring you are being paid correctly and working safe hours. Sign up today and join over 5000 doctors in the NSW public health system fighting for better workplace conditions: www.doctorsintraining.org.au/join

19.01.2022 Chronic under resourcing of acute mental health care and access block in our emergency departments has led to unacceptable workplace risks for doctors and health staff. This situation must be addressed by NSW Health and the state government. The Doctors Union is aware that members are concerned about security at Westmead, including that there are reports of insufficient duress alarms. Hospital management must take all necessary steps to address occupational violence at the hospital and to keep staff safe. We will be working with our members to address the issues raised with the union.

19.01.2022 We are workplace and industrial specialists. We understand how the system works and when it falls down, so we can give you the support when you need it. If you’re an intern, RMO or registrar, join ASMOF today at www.doctorsintraining.org.au/join!

18.01.2022 The 3300+ coronavirus infections that have been recorded among healthcare workers, mostly in Victoria, are completely unacceptable. More needs to be done by governments and public hospitals to improve infection control practices and ensure safe workplaces.

17.01.2022 Whilst doctors are saving lives, theyve had their wages frozen - which amounts to a cut in real terms. Doctors across the state are opposing this unfair cut. Sign our petition asking the Premier and the Treasurer to withdraw the wage freeze case in the Industrial Relations Commission here: https://actionnetwork.org/peti/stophealthworkerswagefreeze/

16.01.2022 In a letter that was sent to the SELSHD Executive earlier this month, Registrars at Prince of Wales Hospital anonymously revealed their onerous work demands, including that they were required to be on call for ‘every patient every time’, and were actively discouraged from claiming their entitlements. The Executive have now responded.

16.01.2022 Our next coffee morning is with Hesta at Blacktown Hospital- Fresh+Cafe on Tuesday November 10. All doctors are welcome to have a coffee on us between 7:30am- 1pm. We are keen to check in with our members and have a chat about current staffing and other issues at the Hospital that our Union is advocating on, and see how we can best support you.

15.01.2022 The findings of the Auditor-Generals report will come as no surprise to our members, and reflect many of the key concerns that our Union has been agitating on throughout the pandemic. The report confirmed PPE was not always available in required sizes and that HealthShare NSW placed caps on high-demand PPE items that were too low to meet requirements in some LHD's.

15.01.2022 We plan to arrange a series of LHD level meetings with members to discuss how this matter might be progressed.

15.01.2022 Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, which also coincides with #RUOK Day. R U OK is an important question but theres more to say after R U OK? Ask, then listen, encourage action and check-in. We know that doctors are at significantly higher risk of suicide than the general population. It is well recognised that unsafe hours, stress and burnout are high risk factors for depression and suicide. Weve visited multiple hospitals this week to have coffee and check-in with membe...rs. ASMOF is always here if you have an issue in your workplace affecting your wellbeing. Learn what to say after R U OK? at www.ruok.org.au

15.01.2022 A decision on the wage freeze case is expected in the coming weeks. ASMOF and other Unions maintain that there is no economic rationale for this freeze, and that the NSW Government should be supporting healthcare workers, not cutting their pay. Attend our meeting on the wage freeze on Thursday 27th August to find out more - invite will be sent to all members via email next week.

14.01.2022 Thank you South Australian Salaried Medical Officers Association for speaking out about this appalling situation. We are seeing the same gaps in NSW mental health services. Our doctors need support, resources and beds to be able to do their job properly, and Governments needs to step up.

13.01.2022 Thanks to all the doctors at Blacktown Hospital who came by to grab a coffee and meet our team! Members at Blacktown raised deep concerns around understaffing and patient safety, describing the staffing as ‘shocking’. We will continue to meet with members in every speciality at Blacktown to ensure the hospital is adequately staffed, and escalate our safety concerns if required. The Coffee Mornings are continuing next week: ... - On Thursday we’ll be at Concord Hospital at The Food Stop from 7:30am-12:00pm. - On Friday we’ll be at Liverpool Hospital at the Cosmopolitan from 7:30am-12:00pm. See more

13.01.2022 The drastic action taken by Obstetricians at Blacktown Hospital has exposed just how deep concerns around understaffing and patient safety run at the Hospital. Choosing to resign from your post is not an action doctors take lightly, and it reflects their grave concerns for the safety of their patients. Doctors are overwhelmed, unsafe and unsupported by a system that blames them when things go wrong.... We have been advocating on behalf of trainees at Blacktown since September, when members reported that they were struggling with unreasonable workloads, with only 1 trainee doctor covering the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department on evening and night shifts, with no consultant on weekends. ASMOF requested that locum doctors be employed as a matter of urgency to ensure patients and doctors were safe at the Hospital. Management have since confirmed that they will be sourcing more junior and senior doctors, and have committed to having two doctors on evening and nights, as well as a consultant over the weekend. Employing locums and contracting specialist services is a necessary short-term fix to this crisis but a long-term solution is needed. The Department must develop a proper staffing model which includes enough permanent, salaried doctors to reflect increasing presentations at Blacktown. ASMOF is aware that understaffing is not just limited to the O&G Department and is widespread at the hospital and across the Western Sydney Health District. Our members have described the staffing at Western Sydney as ‘shocking’. We will continue meeting with members in every specialty at Blacktown to ensure the hospital is adequately staffed, and will escalate our safety concerns if required. Both Blacktown and the WSLHD have committed to having regular Union Consultative meetings with ASMOF. The NSW Government is ultimately responsible for ensuring that our public hospitals in Western Sydney are able to meet patient demand, which is driven by a high concentration of chronic disease and socio-economic disadvantage. We need to look at the bigger picture and Western Sydney is being short changed.

13.01.2022 Every worker deserves to be treated with dignity and respect in a safe work environment. If you are experiencing bullying or harassment in your workplace, please reach out to us: http://www.asmofnsw.org.au/ContactUs.htm We provide advice, represent our members in the complaints process and act to mitigate the impact on doctors training and career progression.

11.01.2022 ASMOF has established a Safe Workplaces and Office Accommodation Working Group to help guide our industrial and organising strategies around office accommodation and safe workplaces. Please provide feedback our Position Paper and let us you are interested in participating in the Working Group.

11.01.2022 Weve been advocating strongly for months to make sure fit testing is undertaken for all health workers who wear P2/N95 masks. The Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC) have now agreed with us that fit testing is required for medical staff working in high risk areas or performing certain procedures on patients with COVID-19. This is a great union win. Our thanks to NSW Nurses and Midwives Association who did great work on this and congratulations to every ASMOF member who ca...mpaigned to ensure safety at work. If your management has not already implemented fit testing in line with these new requirements, contact ASMOF at [email protected]

10.01.2022 Do you work at Westmead hospital and want to ensure there are appropriate lactation spaces for staff in the new CASB building? This coming Monday (9/11) at 1pm to 130pm ASMOF staff will be attending the CASB to view a proposed lactation space. We want to make sure it meets members’ needs. If you’re keen to attend with us to give management feedback on the space, please get in touch with Hanna or Richard on 02 9212 6900 or [email protected] or [email protected]

10.01.2022 SafeWork NSW is seeking your feedback on a draft Code of Practice on managing the risks to psychological health.

10.01.2022 We had a great day at Westmead on Tuesday for a Doctors in Training lunch. Thank you to all the doctors who spoke with us, and a warm welcome to new members of ASMOF! Our industrial staff will be back at Westmead today for another site visit of the new Central Acute Services Building (CASB). We would love to hear from you if you work at Westmead and have feedback on the space and amenities provided in the CASB. Its more important than ever to be part of your Union. Visit doctorsintraining.org.au to find out more or send us a message.

09.01.2022 Need coffee to function in the morning? Weve got you covered. Tomorrow we will be at Bankstown Hospital- Operation Espresso from 7:30-12. Come have a chat to us about our investigation into trainee safety at Bankstown Hospital & enjoy a free coffee.

08.01.2022 Another understaffed hospital has reached crisis point and unfortunately it comes as no surprise to our Union. In September we urgently intervened at Maitland when a group of Registrars sought our help, and we uncovered a litany of issues including unsafe hours, inadequate supervision, support & training, and underpayments. As a result of our action Registrars who were taking exams were immediately pulled out of Maitland and rotated back to John Hunter Hospital, so they could... be prepare for their exams and be properly supervised. We have since put forward a detailed plan to Maitland hospital and the broader HNELHD to ensure patients and doctors are safer at Maitland. ASMOF will continue to work alongside management to ensure the wellbeing of doctors in training.

08.01.2022 Today we wrapped up O Week with a visit to Bankstown Hospital. We would like to thank all the doctors who spoke to interns about our Union, and welcome our newest members into the fold. In case you missed it, here is a message from ASMOF members which we have been sharing with with interns throughout O Week. We have a lot more hospital visits planned for the year- keep an eye on this page for details. And if you haven't joined your Union yet you can sign up online at www.doctorsintraining.org.au.

08.01.2022 Did any of our members watch Four Corners last night? A summary is here: https://www.abc.net.au//four-corners-mental-heal/12560686 This powerful investigation into forensic mental health found that hospitals often turn mentally unwell patients away due to bed block, which can lead to tragic circumstances. Courageous and compassionate family members have spoken out about how the mental health system failed their loved ones when they most needed help.... We are aware that our members are often put under enormous pressure from management not to admit patients at the start of a shift due to no beds being available, and there is a general reluctance of management to have skilled staff due to cost. ASMOF NSW is calling for this situation to change and has been involved in advocacy around safe psychiatry staffing levels for many years. This problem is unfortunately seen Australia-wide and the federal Doctors Union is also calling for urgent action. See our position paper here: https://bit.ly/2FP3xjf If you are a doctor facing these challenges in your workplace we want to hear from you. Please contact us at [email protected].

07.01.2022 Liverpool Hospital wants to implement a new Emergency Department (ED) security model which will reduce the amount of dedicated security services for the hospital. This model will not work at a large metropolitan hospital like Liverpool. Read more about the model and this issue below.

05.01.2022 The Inquiry into rural healthcare in NSW is now underway and is already revealing damning evidence of understaffing, under-resourcing and the downgrading of critical incidents, as reported in the Sydney Morning Herald. Due to your feedback, our submission detailed a range of proactive recommendations to ensure rural doctors have safe working conditions. The NSW Government must immediately invest in rural health to support the short-term and long-term viability of rural hosp...itals, and ensure patient care is aligned with community and medical standards. Our submission is scheduled to be published on the Inquiry website by close of business on Friday 12 February. We will keep you updated on the progress of the Inquiry. 05.01.2022 Please see the latest advice for staff employed in the NSLHD. Thank you to all doctors who continue to work hard to get us through this pandemic.

05.01.2022 Join us at 5pm today for a meeting on the NSW Governments Inquiry into health outcomes and access to health and hospital services regional, rural and remote NSW. We know that rural, regional and remote health services have been under resourced and understaffed for far too long. Come along and share your experience to inform out submission about the general provision and availability of health services in non-metropolitan areas.

04.01.2022 Consultation with WSLHD and the Health Unions has commenced regarding the transition of services to the CASB. The provision of appropriate office accommodation and other staff spaces is critical. If you are scheduled to move into a new office in the CASB and have questions or concerns, we encourage you to contact us.

04.01.2022 The report found that over a third of junior doctors were working unpaid overtime on a daily basis, and that almost 40% of the junior doctors had never or rarely received follow-up support after they were involved in a clinical incident. Dr Raj Ubeja, co-chair of the ASMOF NSW Doctors in Training Committee said: ‘This is important and concrete evidence for what we already know. Doctors in training face a lottery in terms of the safety of their workplace, and many of us won’t get access to the resources and support we need to do our job safely.'

03.01.2022 Monday 16 November is a day of action on wage cuts and we encourage our members to show their support! Join ASMOF at the ‘Scrap the Wage Cut Rally’ at noon at NSW Parliament. The public sector pay cuts are now here to stay. The ABC has reported that the NSW Government is planning for just a 1.5% wage increase in the 2020-21 State Budget, instead of the usual 2.5% increase. ASMOF stands alongside other public sector unions in opposing these cuts, and we need your support. The... pandemic has clearly shown us the value of our public health services, and we have relied on our public sector employees to navigate our way through this safely. We now need to stand up for our profession and all employees of NSW Health. If you are interested in attending the rally please email Richard Thompson at [email protected] who will be coordinating ASMOF attendance at the rally.

03.01.2022 Thanks to the members at St. George Hospital and Sutherland Hospital who stopped by earlier this week to grab a coffee and discuss your rights at work. This morning we will be offering a free coffee to DiTs at Royal North Shore. Come and see us at JM Formula anytime before 12pm!

03.01.2022 Solidarity to the 2,414 healthcare workers who have tested positive to COVID-19 in Victoria. The Victorian Government has said only 10-15% of those with COVID-19 actually got it at work. That just doesnt add up. Healthcare workers work in high-risk environments. ... Governments need to do everything in their power to ensure hospitals are safe workplaces and are stocked with the appropriate PPE and resources.

02.01.2022 TONIGHT we will be holding the first in a series of meetings for doctors in training on understanding your pay, and how you can ensure you are getting paid what you are owed. At the meetings we will: - Run you through the Top 3 errors we find on doctors' payslips so you know what to look out for. ... - Give you an update on how we are getting money back for doctors in training, with the latest on our current investigations (including Bankstown) and what we have uncovered. - Provide an overview of our auditing service - Discuss live issues at your workplace. The meetings will be held via Zoom and run from 7.30pm-8.30pm. We encourage you to bring your colleagues along too- they don't have to be Union members to join! This week' schedule: Tuesday 8 December - SESLHD/ISLHD/ St Vincents Wednesday 9 December - WSLHD/NBMLHD/ WNSWLHD Thursday 10 December - NSLHD/CCLHD/MNCLHD Your Pay Your Say https://zoom.us/j/96759408083 We hope to see you there!

01.01.2022 We are looking for members from Interns to Senior Staff Specialists to become ASMOF representatives in your workplaces. As we are run by doctors for doctors, it is important we have active members in the workplace that are proud of their Union and committed to defending and promoting doctors’ rights at work.

01.01.2022 ASMOF INDUSTRIAL STAFF STOP UNSAFE WORK PRACTICES AT BANKSTOWN-LIDCOMBE HOSPITAL On Wednesday and Thursday this week ASMOF Industrial staff formally exercised their rights under the NSW Industrial Relations Act to enter Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital to investigate suspected breaches of the Public Hospital Medical Officers (State) Award 2019 and the Work Health and Safety Act 2011. This is a right that is only available to union officials for the benefit of union members.... Read what we have found so far here: http://www.asmofnsw.org.au//asmof-industrial-staff-stop-un

01.01.2022 Violence in the workplace should never be accepted or considered the norm. It is abundantly clear that more needs to be done at the local level as well as by NSW Health in driving an improved safety culture across hospitals in NSW.

01.01.2022 ‘We in NSW were told that we provided the gold standard COVID response in terms of contract tracing and the response in hospitals.. they are disrespecting us fairly severely’ - ASMOF NSW President Dr Tony Sara spoke out against the public sector wage cuts today at the rally outside Parliament House. Doctors stand alongside all public sector workers in protesting these cuts which make no economic sense. They will exacerbate the already significant divide in working conditions... between junior doctors working in NSW and their colleagues in other states. #cutshurteverybody Unions NSW

01.01.2022 Contact us if you have any concerns about onerous and unsafe working hours.
