17.01.2022 Everyone's heard of Alexander Fleming, but what about Elizabeth McCoy? This #WomensEqualityDay, find out how her contributions to industrial microbiology made t...he success of penicillin possible and helped usher in the antibiotics age. She also characterized Clostridium bacteria for use in industrial acetonebutanolethanol (ABE) fermentation - an accomplishment the New York Times covered in a 1946 story Wisconsin University Girl Wins Patent on an Industrial Solvent. McCoy was a 43-year old (full) Professor of Bacteriology at the time. And McCoy's discoveries didn't stop there: https://skyw.io/zU5CRS. Photo courtesy of Dr. Gary Roberts.

04.01.2022 Antimicrobial resistance is when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change to become resistant to medications. Resistance to antibiotic, antiviral, antifung...al, and antiparasitic medication is a growing problem in treating infections, and is often due to: Misuse: not taking prescribed medications as directed by your doctor Overuse: taking them when you don’t need to take them at all. Antimicrobial resistance not only affects humans, but also animals and the environment. If this keeps happening, some infections may become impossible to treat and there is an increased risk of severe illnesses and death. It is important to use these medications properly, and only when they are required and prescribed by a doctor. Never self-medicate with antibiotics if you are unwell, or take antibiotics that are not prescribed for you. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, get tested as soon as possible.
