22.01.2022 Steamrail Victoria's A2 986 and R711 break the dark and brooding silence around outer Ballarat township of Navigator as they rumble past with a diverted Eureka Express during a light sun shower.

21.01.2022 As the sun sets in spectacular fashion overhead, 1694 performs a photostop for the gathered passengers at Nobelius Siding. 1694, a Climax-type locomotive, is photographed hauling the Twilight Outing train from Menzies Creek to Lakeside. With a running time of 45 minutes between Emerald and Lakeside stations - an increase of the 20 minutes allowed for timetabled trains - there was plenty of opportunities for photo stops in the picturesque forest as the sun went down.

21.01.2022 Charging uphill towards Menzies Creek, 8A leads 7A over the Monbulk Creek trestle bridge and into the suburb of Selby with the first train of the day for Lakeside.

20.01.2022 The signal is set for the crew of ex-LMS locomotive no. 43106 to depart the riverside station of Hamtpon Loade with a train for Kidderminster on the iconic Severn Valley Railway.

19.01.2022 The bruised and sullen storm clouds over Lal Lal part as A2 986 leads R711 over the freight line between Ballarat and Geelong with a diverted Eureka Express tour.

18.01.2022 Dawn has only just broken, and the first rays of sunshine are still on the other side of the hills of Belgrave as Climax locomotive no. 1694 rolls into Belgrave, with the clunking sound of its gears reverberating off the forest. June 2016.

16.01.2022 14A climbs up Fielder bank on an overcast autumn day with a train for Gembrook during the Easter 2021 school holidays.

14.01.2022 Steamrail's Y164 rolls across one of the many level crossing which break up the line between Muckleford and Maldon, on the Victorian Goldfields Railway. Echoing branchline goods trains from the 1970s, the Y Class is shuttling some empty freight wagons to Maldon for a charter train.

11.01.2022 Steamrail Victoria's newest workhorse, A2 986, leads R711 downhill towards Moorabool Viaduct on the outskirts of Geelong beneath setting autumn sun. Of note is the dual gauge trackwork; between Geelong and Gheringhap, this formerly double-tracked broad gauge corridor was selected as the new mainline between Melbourne and Adelaide in the early 1990s when plans for gauge standardisation were floated. In this picture, the outermost rail on the right is for the Victorian "broad gauge" with a spacing of 5'3", with the inner rail being the national "standard gauge" of 4' 8 1/2".

08.01.2022 NG/G16 129 makes an impressive sight as it crosses the Monbulk Creek trestle bridge back in February 2020.

07.01.2022 Paying expert attention, the loco crew of R711 (with A2 986 behind) come to a stop right next to the water hydrant on platform 2, which the Steamrail volunteers would then use to refill the tenders of these giant steam locos.

06.01.2022 Proudly displaying the Steamrail Victoria headboard for all to see, A2 986 leads R711 up the tough climb out of Ballarat with the duo nearing the summit at Warrenheip. Previously a junction station, Warrenheip sees the main line to Melbourne (on the right of frame) veering off towards Bacchus Marsh while the goods line - looking decidedly unloved - continues on towards Geelong. These days, Warrenheip is little more than a passing loop on the goods line. Like many places on the Ballarat to Geelong line, the station buildings, platforms, and shelters have been demolished, leaving nothing to the untrained eye to hint at their history.

05.01.2022 Running two hours late, the Great Britain XI railtour finally made an appearance in the West Midlands beneath threatening skies, hauled by ex-LMS steam locomotive no. 45212.
