25.01.2022 Did you know Woolworths has a sensory hour? Between 10:30am and 11:30am on Tuesdays the #FreshFoodPeople dim their lights, turn down music and register sounds, turn off bakery and rotisserie oven buzzers and clear the shop floor and entry ways for a more sensory-friendly shopping experience.

20.01.2022 A new groundbreaking study by Telethon Kids Institute shows early intervention through parent-led therapy improves social development, -: "The potential for what this means for our society is quite staggering. When we think about 53 per cent of all children within the NDIS have a diagnosis of autism, we start to understand how significant this finding could be," Professor Andrew Whitehouse said. 19.01.2022 We have passed our NDIS audit! A huge thank you to our families for their time in giving such positive feedback of our services, and our team across Sydney and Canberra. We want to give particular thanks to Akemi and Sumit in Canberra, who worked so well to have everything in place. Thank you also to Lynda in Sydney, and all of our Senior team, for their patience and cooperation in getting organised. And Dianne, who has done an incredible job steering this ship. Max, Admin.

14.01.2022 "People on the spectrum sort of feel like an alien being dropped in from outer space, and you can't quite connect properly. Being on stage and making a room full of people laugh, felt like a connection I hadn't been able to establish in any other environment." , , .

11.01.2022 Next up in our series breaking down some common EIBI terms for new autism parents is 'Discrete Trial Training' (DTT): Discrete Trial Training stems from Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) principles and involves conducting simultaneous learning opportunities by breaking down complex skills into more manageable steps. Often beginning with 'readiness' skills, the first steps take place using a learner’s motivation. Gradually building up skills in small st...eps, independence is encouraged to give the learner more access to fun things in their world, such as communication with friends or learning to play with new and different toys. By breaking skills down, the child gets frequent opportunities for learning and becoming competent and mastering skills relatively quickly before more complex skills are introduced. Once new skills are mastered in a discrete setting, programming for generalisation occurs. For more information, visit: https://bit.ly/2V7eFjw
11.01.2022 Person-first: Person with autism Identity-first: Autistic person While both terms are widely used in the community, most people have a preference so be sure to ask!
11.01.2022 With restrictions easing, we can finally get back to doing what we do best (second to delivering ABA services of course)! EATING TOGETHER! Happy (deep)Fryday!

08.01.2022 So important to understand how learning works. It’s not about just exposing to experiences, it’s mastering a skill and then learning the next skill. https://www.the74million.org//berens-science-shows-that-l/

02.01.2022 Dear Families, I am sure that you have been overwhelmed with the information around Coronavirus. We are no different, and we are making decisions in light of new information to keep our families, staff and our community at large safe. From Monday, we are implementing a procedure for sessions at our clinics. ... Clinic Based Sessions We please ask families that if you or your child has any sign of illness to inform us. We are asking that if you are early, please stay in your car until 5 minutes prior to your session. A clinician will come outside between 5 minutes prior and 5 minutes after your sessions start to pick up your child. This gives us the opportunity to spread out and limit entering people in our clinics. The clinician will wash/sanitise your child’s hands and their hands prior to the start of the session. No social skills with children in the same rooms will be occurring. The last task during the session is that your child washes their hands. Picking up your child, one of our administrative team members will be at the door, and will let the clinician know that you are there. Please be at the clinic 10 minutes prior to the end of the session. The clinician will bring your child downstairs and hand them over. Until further notice, we are limiting the chat at the end of the session. Please read the session/soap notes and if you have any questions, please email the clinician. Home Based Sessions All sessions that occur at home, the program manager/BSP/BT will wash their hands upon entry. Team Meetings All team meetings will be occurring via Telehealth. I have attached a consent form in both word/PDF. Please print and sign, or if you know how to sign it digitally please do so. The Program Managers will be asking and following up with you prior to your next team meeting. All families will be set up with a google drive video account, where they can upload videos. It is likely that Team Meetings are slightly shorter, for example 90 minutes but the remaining 30 minutes will be used to review video footage during that month and feedback will be provided for these videos. First Steps As much as possible we are going to be shortening, and delivering First Steps sessions via Telehealth. This means that instead of 2.5 hour sessions, the sessions can be delivered in different formats/durations. Your individual Program Manager will contact you and discuss this. For example, 40 minutes instruction via our Telehealth platform, with homework via video, followed by another hour later in the week with video feedback. All families will be set up with a google drive video account, where they can upload videos. We are continuing to provide the best services that we can under the circumstances and we appreciate your support and cooperation during this time. Warm Regards, Dianne Verstappen, BCBA
