25.01.2022 Ooh! A sale I loved baby wearing. Yes, it may be the last thing on your mind while we are hot and humid. However, cool weather isnt far away and then itll be nice to have a lovely hot water bottle nestled on you. I still have my 9yo ergo lying around. No longer used (my baby turned 4 today and I find her a bit too heavy now) but cant bring myself to part with it!
25.01.2022 Tonight I light a candle to commemorate our baby lost to miscarriage (2014) as well as acknowledge other families with babies born too soon or who were stillborn, and those children who passed away after birth. #waveoflight
25.01.2022 Putting my junior employee to work with dusting (she followed me down to the office and asked to help so isnt child labour). Since she was little, shes often chipped in to eg. empty the dishwasher and pass me the pegs. What little jobs does your child like to help out with?
24.01.2022 Just over a year ago, I got this beautiful orchid as a thank you from a client. Ive nursed it through infestation of scale but Im kind of proud to say its still alive and looking very pretty in our bathroom. Thank you K, and not-so-baby G!
21.01.2022 Until further notice, I will be suspending office or home visits to babies and infants due to the Corona virus (I dont have it). Many fellow IBCLCs are considering the same, and some hospitals have suspended home midwifery visits. Whilst I am currently well and have no contact with those who are positive or are from at risk countries, I feel this will reduce the chance of me transmitting the virus to you or your baby should I fall ill with it. Im hoping this is only for a... couple of weeks, and I will continue to ensure your safety with my normal practice of proper hand hygiene, disinfection of scales and stethoscopes or other shared equipment. I will also support current clients via phone or Skype, and this is a possibility for new clients. At this stage, I am unsure if private health will rebate remote consults, you will need to check with your fund about this. As well, we know that breastfeeding (if you or your infant is positive for COVID-19), is still encouraged with some extra precautions: Considering the benefits of breastfeeding and the insignificant role of breastmilk in the transmission of other respiratory viruses, the mother can continue breastfeeding, while applying all the necessary precautions. For symptomatic mothers well enough to breastfeed, this includes wearing a mask when near a child (including during feeding), washing hands before and after contact with the child (including feeding), and cleaning/disinfecting contaminated surfaces as should be done in all cases where anyone with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 interacts with others, including children. If a mother is too ill, she should be encouraged to express milk and give it to the child via a clean cup and/or spoon all while following the same infection prevention methods https://www.unicef.org//novel-coronavirus-outbreak-what-pa
20.01.2022 I am happy to see you in your homes again, with the following plans in place to keep us both safe: COVID screening questions will be asked prior to visiting. All household members are to be well for the visit to go ahead. I will postpone if I am unwell. Minimal people in the room if possible (eg Mum and baby only, if room is small). ... Access to fresh air if possible, via an open window/door. If time permits, health/birth history questions should be done via phone prior. Temperatures will be checked on arrival via non-contact thermometer. I will check mine prior to leaving my home too. Above 37.5 deg C, visits will be postponed. I will wear a mask during consult, unless you are hearing impaired and this impacts on you being able to hear me. You may you request that I dont in this case only. If you wish to wear a mask you can, but I dont expect you to. I will bring minimal equipment into your house, and leave the rest in my car, to be accessed if needed. I will come wearing fresh clothes, and not from my nursing job or another client without changing. At this stage I will only see one client per day - this will increase to more clients per day if community transmission remains minimal. I use the COVID safe app for contact Tracing. I have completed the COVID-19 infection control training (https://www.health.gov.au//covid-19-infection-control-trai) I regularly sanitise my hands and any shared equipment as part of my standard nursing care. Office visits remain unavailable at this stage.
20.01.2022 When often hear the old adage never wake a sleeping baby. Why then, is it sometimes necessary to do wake them? Because some new babies are very clever at conserving energy and will not ask for feeds, and instead sleep to prevent calorie expenditure. Part of my job is to help you understand when this is happening, and when it is appropriate to let babies ask for feeds once the problem is no longer an issue.
20.01.2022 With the sudden change in community transmission of COVID19 cases, it is with a heavy heart that from tomorrow, I am holding off on doing in-person visits again. I will reassess the situation on a week-to-week basis before reverting to the most recent method of visits: Eg: only seeing one client per day, intake questions done prior to the visit, screening for COVID risks, no visits if anyone is unwell, seeing you in a well-ventilated room and frequent hand washing/disinfection of equipment). The good news is, Im setting up some new equipment to do virtual consults which should be up and running in the next few weeks, in case this drags out.
19.01.2022 The downside to the crazy wet weather in our downstairs floor (which include my office). Lucky we were home to lift everything up and keep things dry, including all my files!
19.01.2022 The topic of creating a safe sleep space often comes up in consults, as so many parents unintentionally cosleep, or fall asleep with their baby on the couch because they are worried about the bed being safe (in fact, the couch is actually a big SIDS risk). In light of the recent SIDS tragedy which has happened not far from where I live, you might find this helpful to create your safe sleep space. https://rednose.org.au/news/advice-to-parents-cosleeping
19.01.2022 I love that this study demonstrates what we know happens in practice. Stress inhibits letdowns. I often talk to Mums about practicing mindful relaxation while pumping or feeding. Often we do some deep breathing cycles at a visit and see that letdown happen soon after. One of the breathing cycles I like to suggest: breathe in for 2 seconds, hold for one second and out for 3.
18.01.2022 Many parents like to swaddle their babies. Did you know about not swaddling your babys hips tightly?
17.01.2022 Yum yum, what’s cooking? PUMP PARTS! It’s great to be back visiting families. I have limited availability over the holidays, but please call/text or say hello over on my webpage to see if we can connect in person. http://aspirelactation.com.au/say-hello/
15.01.2022 Recall: Brauer Teething Gel 20g Consumers and health professionals are advised that Brauer Natural Medicine, in consultation with the TGA, is recalling one batc...h of Brauer Teething Gel 20g due to bacterial contamination. Brauer Teething Gel is used to reduce the discomfort caused by teething in babies. The affected batch is 809057 with an expiry date of September 2020. This batch has been distributed to pharmacies, health food stores and sold via the internet since 24 October 2018. Testing has found that some samples from this batch have been contaminated with Burkholderia, a bacteria commonly found in soil, water and the general environment. They are capable of causing infections in healthy hosts, but particularly affect those with compromised immune systems. These bacteria can be also spread through person-to-person contact. The initial symptoms of Burkholderia infection may be a low-grade fever, potentially progressing to much more serious conditions, including pneumonia and other lung disorders. For more information on this recall, visit https://www.tga.gov.au/alert/brauer-teething-gel-20-g
15.01.2022 Aspire Lactation was recently the recipient of a random act of kindness from a local mum in my community. I want to pay it forward. Any clients (new or follow ups) who have a consult with me during October or November will go into the draw to win an ABA membership worth $70. The winner may also choose to gift their membership in another persons name or offer to redraw for someone else from the entries in the event they are not requiring it. What do you get with ABA membership? See here https://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/membership/individual This offer is not sponsored or associated with Facebook or the Australian Breastfeeding Association. Winner will be notified by mobile in early December and must redeem by 10th December.
13.01.2022 A nice little video which shows the story of a milk donor and the lucky recipients!
13.01.2022 Can you help with this survey on work and breastfeeding?
13.01.2022 Australia is experiencing catastrophic and severe fire warnings in many areas. This information may be helpful especially as it is absent from emergency information handouts.
12.01.2022 Mamiko from Japanese Healing Massage Therapy has a great video on how to stretch out those tight neck muscles which sometimes happen with breastfeeding.
12.01.2022 Schools back, and therefore so are my regular working days, woohoo! The downside is Im off to make lunches again I hope those of you with schoolies had a good day. Mine came home happy and relaxed so I feel thats a good start to 2020.
11.01.2022 Feeding and change facilities for your baby at the Wellers Hill fete. Come and say hi!
11.01.2022 Really exciting news coming out of our state government today. Zero new COVID-19 cases, and significant slowing in numbers in the days prior to this. Today I will be looking at how best I can work with local mums, and potentially open for some home visits under strict screening guidelines. This may include shortened visiting time (eg we will do intake and history over the phone, and only weigh/assess feeds in person).
11.01.2022 After screening for COVID-19 risks and doing history-taking over the phone, I’m happy to come to your house to help you with your feeding issues. It’s been a tough time for many new Mums who have given birth recently and I am so glad I am now able to meet you in person! I have some limited bookings available for next week, please call me to discuss a time to suit you.

08.01.2022 Its PANDA week, and over the next few days of the week remaining, I want to share a few of my favourite resources for those experiencing perinatal depression and anxiety. https://www.panda.org.au/info-support/checklists I like the format of this checklist, plus there are other checklists are available for partners and expectant parents/partners.
06.01.2022 Love the variety I get living and working with families in Brisbane. My job can take me from an apartment in the city one day, to a property with these animals saying goodbye as I drive off.
06.01.2022 Unfortunately, pretty much any picture staged for advertising looks like this. Read on to understand what will be safer for your baby and items to skip.
05.01.2022 This was a nice way to end our day at the Wellers Hill SS fete. Thanks to everyone who popped in to say hello, and use the facilities! It was a pleasure helping all the mums and dads who needed to care for their babies while at the fete. Those of you who registered an interest in booking, or referred a friend today have access to the special discounts!
04.01.2022 The lucky winner of a years membership to the Australian Breastfeeding Association valued at $70 has been drawn with a random number generator, and the winner will be emailed to let her know about this wonderful prize. All clients who were seen during October and November had an entry (or more if they had multiple visits).
04.01.2022 Time for a dirty pump post again! Two mums I have seen this month were kindly given/loaned pumps from family or friends. They very nicely let me take photos for educational purposes. The pumps had lots of extras thrown in: old milk, black and white mould spores. This is why second hand pumps without backflow protectors (to stop any condensation or milk returning to the pump) are such a big no-no.

04.01.2022 I had a good giggle at this!
02.01.2022 Im here making my lunch, thinking about what it looks like and glad Im now ok with that. Once upon a time when I was a new mum, I couldnt bring myself to eat seedy mustard poo and had to switch to Dijon Did you know a breastfed infants poo can look a bit like seedy mustard?
02.01.2022 Its a good idea to ensure you have adequate sources of iodine during pregnancy and lactation for your babys development. If youre dairy-free or avoiding shellfish, it might be worth talking to a dietitian about other sources of iodine or supplements. Regardless of being dairy-free or not, in reality dairy is not really a reliable source in Australia. Iodine occurs in dairy as a result of the cleaning process of milk equipment, and this method has been mostly phased out in Australia.
01.01.2022 Were still open and taking bookings for both antenatal and postnatal consults online via FaceTime and Skype, or telephone. Whilst its not my preferred method of working, it looks like it will be the reality of how my work needs to be performed while this pandemic is going on. At this stage I am still none the wiser if private health will cover you for it not being in person, but the bonus is I am offering $10 off the price of an office booking fee, which may help with this. I encourage you to hassle the funds about covering it as you are the ones paying for extras you cannot access!
01.01.2022 I love this memory which popped up today. I mustve walked past so many people with my baby carrier flopped down, Pippas poop showing and nobody said a damn thing to me! You think with my kids getting older things the surprise stains would happen less. It doesnt. The stains just get higher up (thanks to snotfaced kids!).
