15.01.2022 Parents know the importance of fine motor control -- especially when it comes to handwriting -- which is probably why I'm frequently asked for advice on this su...bject. Here's what I say.. Put your pencils down and go play on the monkeybars. https://www.movingsmart.co.nz//M-IS-FOR-MONKEYBARS-Getting

11.01.2022 With social distancing measures and restrictions still in place we are still spending a lot of time at home and not socialising as much as we normally would. F...or teenagers, this can take quite a toll on their mental and social health. Looking after your mental health is just as important as looking after your physical health. We have put together some handy guides on mindfulness and self-care, that parents and carers can use to assist teenagers in their home.

10.01.2022 Parent engagement is about the important people in the education of a young person working together. We no longer live in a factory era. Its no longer good en...ough to drop kids at school and expect them to emerge educated 12 years later. The boundaries between school and the real world need to be bulldozed. A good start is to make learning an anywhere, anytime activity. Parent engagement is key in that process. https://lindastade.com/important-factor-childs-education/
09.01.2022 Kindergarten and early primary teachers have aired their concerns that the rise of touchscreen devices means more children are starting school not ready to lea...rn handwriting. There is a big decline in fine motor skills" among children arriving at prep and kindergarten. Children who spend too much time on touchscreens do not develop the fine motor skills they needed when they need to learn to write. It's not just handwriting, either. Many children have difficulty holding scissors, tying shoelaces or even using cutlery In a world of smartphones, does it really matter if children can't write by hand? For the moment, at least, children still need to learn to write legibly What can parents do? Parents need to make the time for hands-on activities with their children. Modelling with playdough is excellent for building finger strength, as is crafting with scissors, beads and glue.

09.01.2022 I'm hearing from a lot of parents that there have been more than the usual amount of friendship issues at school lately. No doubt that is, in part, due to the r...eturn to school and the disruption in their lives. So, although I wrote this for the beginning of the school year, I think these lessons definitely apply now. (Want to know how to respond to friendship issues? There's an article in the comments!)

03.01.2022 Dont hear me wrong: praising kids is never the problem. Its the KIND of praise that matters. Instead of praising their achievements, we should be praising the...ir work, praising their effort, their persistence, their struggle. With a simple shift in our language, a change in our own mindsets, we can help foster a growth mindset in our kids. More on shifting from FIXED Mindset to GROWTH Mindset:
02.01.2022 Some great tools and tips
02.01.2022 While the students who typed could take down what they heard word for word, people who took longhand notes could not write fast enough to take verbatim notes ... instead they were forced to rephrase the content in their own words. To do that, people had to think deeply about the material and actually understand the arguments. This helped them learn the material better.
