22.01.2022 Day 2 - Beyond the Water Gate A big part of the Year 8 Beyond the Gate is giving students a range of city life experiences. The main aim is to take the fear out of what it would be like to move away from home to pursue a career or university education, as well as have some fun and meet peers from other regional and remote schools across NSW. Some of the activities included a trip to Chinatown, walking across the Harbour Bridge, seeing iconic Sydney landmarks, and gaining exp...ert water safety tips at the beach from volunteers at the Coogee Beach Surf Life Saving Club (‘green water is mean, white water is nice!’). A dip in the ocean followed for those keen to brave the chilly water and windy conditions. For all, Beyond the Gate was a welcome break from the tough conditions their communities are experiencing during the protracted drought. Thanks to all the students and their teachers for their enthusiastic participation and everyone involved in organising such a memorable event. 14.01.2022 The Gateway Winter program saw over 800 Year 12 students engage online with educational resources and participate in academic capacity building workshops to maximise their ATAR and prepare for their HSC. Thanks to Cluey Learning, we are able to provide additional academic support to 100 Gateway students, who will receive 10 hours of 1-to-1 tutoring each. We look forward to hearing how this extra assistance helps them to realise their academic and Uni goals.

12.01.2022 Day 1 - Going Beyond the Gate ASPIRE recently hosted 58 students from 14 of our regional and remote partner schools as part of Year 8 Beyond the Gate. This event is designed to build student confidence in experiencing opportunities outside their local communities as well as broaden their knowledge of university. It was a jam-packed two days involving a tour of UNSW and faculty-led activities on campus as well as time spent exploring Sydney. Students were set a task to film a...nd edit their adventures to create a personal digital story of their journey ‘beyond the gate’. Regional students also joined metro students on campus as part of the Big Day Out event. Catching up with former Condobolin High School student Maddi Waller, now a UNSW first year student studying a Bachelor of Medicine, was one of the many highlights. Seeing and touching green grass for the first time in a long time was also a memorable moment for some students! For many it was their first visit to Sydney and first time on a university campus. Our thanks to everyone involved in making Beyond the Gate a huge success. 08.01.2022 Congratulations to Liliane Utamuriza, one of ASPIRE's Project Officers who was recently presented a Champion Award for Professional Excellence and Advocacy from the organisation, Celebrating African Australians NSW (CAA). CAA celebrates the contributions of African Australians to the growth and prosperity of NSW. The event recognises individual African Australians who have excelled in various areas such as leadership, academia, sports, employment, professionalism, volunteer...ing, entrepreneurship and innovation. Liliane’s award (presented at a gala dinner!) was for securing a professional position with ASPIRE at UNSW, as well as acknowledging the initiative ‘Yes We Can’. This program focused on inspiring and motivating students in ASPIRE partner schools from African backgrounds to explore the educational opportunities available to them in Australia.
