23.01.2022 A new client was very shocked when we told them that they paid the ATO a very large amount of interest. We discovered that their previous accountant had not lodged two years of tax returns with the ATO and therefore an interest bill just keeping accumulating. They were eventually told to pay the tax but were not told that the amount they were paying included a large interest bill. The client had sent copies of their tax returns back to the accountant and they assumed that t...he returns were lodged. You must ensure that if an accountant lodges your return that you receive a notice of assessment from the ATO, this notice confirms that the return was lodged and breaks down what needs to be paid and the date due. Our process is either that the ATO send notices directly to the client or if we receive the notice we provide the original to the client and retain a copy for our records. See more
