20.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK ARTS | Throughout the week our students have learnt about indigenous culture with story time reading, artworks and learning about iconic indigenous role models that have excelled throughout history. One of the artwork activities was to create this giant wall mural. Students from across the school coloured their portion of the mural to then come together and form one united artwork. #AspleySpecialSchool #NAIDOC2020

09.01.2022 KINGFISHER RECYCLE CENTRE RECEIVES WASTESMART AWARD | We are so delighted to announce that our Recycle Centre was chosen as the winner of the Brisbane City Councillors’ WasteSMART Choice Award for 2020. We would like to thank Councillor Sandy Landers for nominating us to be in the running for the award. Her nomination shows recognition for the wonderful work that is done by our Co-Ordinator, Steve Buchanski, and our team of volunteers to create an environmentally responsible... facility which in turn provides a great work experience opportunity for our students. We would also like to pay homage to Harry Johnson who established the Kingfisher Recycle Centre 37 years ago. His vision and determination to see this facility come to fruition is one to be commended and applauded. Thank you Harry. The Recycle Centre couldn't function without recyclable material, so we are so grateful that we have a wonderful community who also values being environmentally responsible by donating unwanted waste products for processing. https://www.wastesmartawards.com.au/winners/ **** ABOUT KINGFISHER RECYCLING CENTRE: Recycling at Aspley Special School began in 1983 with can crushing as a work experience option. Since that time, ‘can crushing’ has been transformed into one of the largest (by volume of product recycled) school-based recycling program, processing over tonnes of recyclables and providing training opportunities for many students with disability. Students will engage in recycling-related skills training, including e-waste processing like removing computer components from laptops and desktops, can crushing, glass sorting, lid removal, stamp recovery, tree planting and mulching. All students regardless of their ability are involved. Students are expected to operate within a work-like environment and complete designated tasks, follow expectations, work within set procedures and adhere to WH&S standards. Students develop and practice valuable life and employment-related skills including staying on task, adhering to quality control measures, exhibiting safe behaviours and displaying acceptable work ethics. These skills can subsequently be refined and transferred to a range of work and supported work environments. > KINGFISHER RECYCLING FACT SHEET http://bit.ly/KingfisherRecycleCentre #KingfisherRecycleCentre #AspleySpecialSchool #WasteSmartAward2020
