25.01.2022 Excited to relaunch the @SugarFreeSmiles website after a little updating over the weekend. Still a lot more work to go but it's OK for now. I didn't get the chance to really focus on oral health advocacy in 2020, so 2021 is going to be the year! #dental https://sugarfreesmiles.com

24.01.2022 Why sugar, cheese and fast food are more addictive than heroin. Studies over the years have revealed the shocking power of sweetness. In one 1980 experiment, hu...man subjects were asked to push a button as soon as they sensed a hit of sugar placed upon their tongues. Their reactions were almost instantaneous a fraction of a second after the sugar landed on their tongues, they sensed it. The smoke from cigarettes takes ten seconds to stir the brain, but a touch of sugar on the tongue will do so in a little more than half a second, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael Moss writes in his new book Hooked: Food, Free Will, and How the Food Giants Exploit Our Addictions (Random House), out Tuesday. That’s nearly twenty times faster than cigarettes. Glucose can start arriving in the blood within ten minutes of eating something, which is as fast as snorted cocaine, Moss writes. Products that are highly refined will send our blood sugar soaring the fastest, and the faster it soars, the faster it hits the reward system in the brain. Furthermore, new research suggests that the faster a food hits our bloodstream and raises our blood sugar, the more our blood sugar crashes afterwards. That drop, Moss writes, prods the brain into making more dopamine that calls upon us to look for more food. 24.01.2022 World Oral Health Day is tomorrow, Saturday 20th March! To raise awareness of oral health, we've created this Science unit with Cool Australia that explores how... sugar increases your tooth decay risk. It explores the familiar topic of acids and bases with a social action twist, using the lens of oral health to reinvigorate the teaching. This unit also explores how high sugar consumption can damage your teeth over time, digging into the chemical reactions and acids and bases' relation. An ideal Science unit for years 9 - 10, view it here: https://www.coolaustralia.org//sugarbyhalf-science-years-/ #sugarbyhalf #coolaustralia #worldoralhealthday #oralhealthday #teachers #school #teeth #toothdecay #modern #lesson #education #science #secondaryschool #school #Curriculum #health #nutrition

20.01.2022 Infection control in out of office settings: COVID-19 changes There have been changes in infection Control Protocols since COVID-19. We have all had to adjust and change the way we work. Change has continued as we have learned more about Covid-19 over time, and as we have moved between stages 1-4 of restrictions. The particular circumstances of our location and the demographics of our staff and patients have also needed to be considered. ... Working in out of office settings with vulnerable patients, and particularly those living in communal residential settings is even more challenging. We need to weigh up the risks of providing or not providing care against the risks of potentially contracting or transmitting Covid-19. Working across disability and Aged Care Sectors means that we can be in settings where some regulations are the same but other legislative and regulatory frameworks exist. This webinar explores how to negotiate Dental Visits to out of office' settings. Program Regulatory Framework and whats changed at each different restriction level. The experience of managing patients out of the office during COVID 19 Pandemic. Whats changed in Residential Aged Care around supporting visiting clinicians. 18.01.2022 Dementia action week continues and today I have asked the fabulous Cathy Boyce to give her tips on treating patients dementia with silver fluoride How can si...lver fluoride help with the treatment of patients with dementia Excellence in the management of the dental biofilm and caries processes is difficult at the best of times, but in clients who have diminished understanding and altered motor functions (oral and dexterity issues) coupled with often their growing aversion to accepting daily oral care assistance often leads to rapid dental demise. The ability of the dental professional to medically manage the oral environment is essential and the use of silver fluorides for this has proven to be a huge bonus to many clients. The ionic silver and fluoride ions have the ability to address the bacterial activity (bacteriaocidal) on contact and offer remarkable remineralisation properties. Silver fluoride has a proven track record of being used in the aged care sector and especially in the area of managing caries in patients with dementia. The ease and safety of application coupled with the effacy of the material provides an opportunity not only for hard tissue stabilisation but with the added benefit of health improvement in the surrounding soft tissues. Those who are fortunate to be able to have access to the Australian manufactured water based silver fluoride/stannous fluoride combination have a distinct advantage because the pH is only 6.3 so the application can be applied efficiently for clients wherever they are, and held in place for extended periods of time ( even in periodontal areas) via fluoride varnish or other water impervious materials without concerns for soft tissue burns often associated with the silver diamine fluorides. Managing the oral health of patients with dementia is not easy, and unfortunately because the health decline is related to their cognitive decline, many are in a compromised place well before they begin to receive appropriate oral health care interventions. Using silver fluorides can greatly assist the clinician to offer improved health outcomes for their challenged clients. Thank you Cathy for such great tips !!!

12.01.2022 Well worth a read..

12.01.2022 In this 13-minute conversation, Dr. PJ Murphy, a UBC faculty of dentistry member shares his insights on the dental management of patients taking anti-thrombotic... drugs. These are the patients who tell us they are on blood thinners. Here are some of the key messages I took away from the conversation: 1. There are many patients taking these medications so we have to be alert; 2. Many of these patients tell us they are taking blood thinners and not much more. We need more information to management them properly in the dental care setting; 3. Some of the key questions to ask: are you taking more than one type, why are you taking these medications, have you changed medications recently; 4. Communication with the family physician of the patient may be very important especially since many of these patients are polypharmacy patients; 5. At around Minute 6, Dr. Murphy shared his screen and walked us through a slide demonstrating dental management options for patients taking the five most common anti-thrombotics (Dabigatran, Warfarin, Heparin/LMWH, Rivaroxaban, Clopidogrel); 6. This slide and other pertinent resources will be in the subsequent CDA Oasis post. We will soon develop a post on CDA Oasis (www.oasisdiscussions.ca), and other communications channels, based on this conversation. If you think this topic is important, please tell your colleagues and friends about it. Many sincere thanks.

07.01.2022 Action week for dementia continues and today I have asked the fabulous Dr Mark Wotherspoon from Dentist to your door for his top tips for treating patients wit...h dementia 5 tips. For middle to late stage dementia patients 1/ Ring guardian/ POA prior to appointment and discuss openly expectations and desired outcomes. Have the main care giver and guardian/ POA present at visits if possible as support for the patient and you! 2/ Collect a thorough dental history from the patients main care giver including daily oral hygiene ( who , how...) any signs or symptoms of dental disease, diet, ability to chew, swallow. (this is often not the family member / guardian who booked the appointment) 3/ First visit for assessment only. Gentle and slow. Get a feel for what can and cant be achieved - develop your treatment plan accordingly. Treatment visits are always way easier if planned. 4/ Be ultra-organized and rehearsed in your care delivery. From visit 1 you should already have planned your room set up , corridors of care , power points [if out of office] etc etc ............... Appointment needs to be as smooth and as short as possible. 5/ Be on time. Be on time. Be on time!
