18.01.2022 Happy Holidays from the Saturday team.

18.01.2022 School holiday are fast approaching and many of our families ask for suggestions for activities to continue with over the holiday break. There are many great apps available and Write About This, is one that we have been using to encourage writing. There is a range of premade activities and also the opportunity to create your own. https://itunes.apple.com//app/write-about-this/id601375313

18.01.2022 Does anyone get overwhelmed by the sheer number of apps available for children? How do you sift through the clutter and find the gems? And when you find those gems, how much are they going to put you out of pocket? We are going to highlight some of our favourite apps every now and then on our Facebook page to share with you. Please feel free to let us know some of yours! Today's gem: "Spellosaur". There is a free version with an upgrade for $4.99 (as of today). It has a variety of games and allows you to put in your child's own spelling words. From the feedback from kids and parents so far, it has been a hit!

15.01.2022 With National Literacy and Numeracy Week coming up early next term, it is worth thinking about the importance and complexities of learning to read. DID YOU KNOW? The Australian Bureau of Statistics quoted last year that 46% of Australian adults cannot read well enough to cope in modern society. Research shows that early intervention is far more effective than remediation when children are older.... HOW CAN PARENTS HELP? Exposing your child to reading from infancy helps your child to develop an appreciation for reading, helps develop their vocabulary and expands their thinking. It gives them the foundation skills for learning to read when they get to school. If you want more information, you can speak with your child's teacher or speech pathologist or you can visit:

02.01.2022 LITERACY... WHY DO WE KEEP TALKING ABOUT THIS??? The UNESCO website states: "Literacy is a fundamental human right and the foundation for lifelong learning. It is fully essential to social and human development in its ability to transform lives. For individuals, families, and societies alike, it is an instrument of empowerment to improve ones health, ones income, and ones relationship with the world." THE PROBLEM... A 2011 study found that Australian Year 4 students ranke...d as the lowest-performing, English-speaking country (27th out of a total 45 countries) for reading comprehension. For more on this, read: http://www.abc.net.au///wilkinson-learning-to-read/4931970 Many students aren't picking up reading and spelling skills easily in the classroom and need more explicit instructions about the relationship between sounds and letters. If your child or you know of a child who struggles with these skills in school, speak to a speech pathologist.
