24.01.2022 If you think your dog is whiny, can't seem to settle, jumps up or does something you would rather they not at home, here's a simple, positive way to help your dog develop behaviour you like.

23.01.2022 Its important to set our dogs up to succeed. Start where there are no distractions, then minimal distractions and build your way up from there.

23.01.2022 The importance of validating the correct behavior

23.01.2022 Do you have a fearful or anxious dog? Just like we have fears, we need to recognise that our dogs may also. Then seek appropriate assistance to help our dogs. We recommend finding a positive reinforcement trainer as the first step.

19.01.2022 Thank you Martha Hoffman for this very good advice.

18.01.2022 There has been some controversy regarding an article published by Outside Magazine. For anyone who is interested, an awesome trainer just posted a response to it:

17.01.2022 Great resource. Thanks Do no harm dog training.

15.01.2022 Puppies cost a lot to raise properly. I have found some cheaper options for some items. Kmart, Target, BigW and the cheaper shops have lots of dog items in their pet sections. Just make sure you check the quality of toys etc to make sure they are safe. These shops also have baby sections that I find invaluable. Try the fitted cot sheets as easy to clean covers for dog beds, couch cushions where the dog may sit, even as a cover for the car seat. They are easy to slip on, rem...ove and wash. I have got a set of 2 fitted cot sheets for $9. My boys actually have more sheets than me. If you want to teach your pup to wear boots you can start with the non slip toddler socks, increasing the size as they grow. This gets them use to having something on their feet and it’s much cheaper that buying 2 or 3 different sized boots. A baby bag is also great if you go out a lot with your dog. They have lots of compartments and you can leave it in the car with extra food, toys, leads and even their vet info. Great for traveling. If you have any other ideas I’d love to hear them, so comment below.

11.01.2022 We couldn't have said this any better ourselves! If your dog isnt doing as requested, stop and look at what is going on? Are you asking too much? Do you need t...o break it down to smaller steps? Are there too many distractions for them to cope? There are so many reasons why your dog might not be able to achieve what you are asking, 'being stubborn' isnt one of them. With thanks to Lynn Windell for this graphic.

10.01.2022 A handler in an Assistance Dog Facebook group posted a lovely post about another team she encountered. It made me think. If we post only negative things about other teams we encounter ‘fake spotting’ we make people so nervous about going out, which then goes down the lead and the dog is nervous to, and more likely to make a mistake. I for one would like to see more positive things. Maybe if we see an assistance dog ‘misbehaving’ we could ask ourselves a couple of questions. ... 1. Is it actually a task? Some dogs jump on their handlers to help with disassociation, or pull on the lead to take them away from a triggering situation, or bark once or twice as an alert. 2. Is the dog training? Look at how the handler is reacting to the behaviour. 3. Is the dog having a bad moment? After all it is a living being, are you perfectly behaved all the time, in every situation. 4. If it isn’t affecting my dog directly, is it any of my business? How would you feel if you were judged on every little mistake? I hope we as an assistance dog community can be more gentle with each other. Pleases share.

09.01.2022 Who here has listened to an episode and what was the biggest thing you took away from it?

07.01.2022 Over the last 2 years I have been privileged to help train a classroom therapy dog for a primary school. Layla has helped students and teachers alike, and has had a huge impact in her school. I am so proud to have played a small part in helping the children who have benefited from her presence.

07.01.2022 Moderator As someone with chronic conditions that can deplete my spoons quickly, I love using this analogy for our dogs.

06.01.2022 We hear the term 'socialisation', but what does it really mean? It's not as simple as it sounds and it does need to be done properly. Not forcing interaction, l...istening to what your pup is telling you, and understanding that often just being nearby and hearing, seeing, smelling whilst remaining calm is of benefit is often forgotten about. With thanks to R+Dogs for this reminder.

04.01.2022 Dogs communicate in many ways. Are you listening to your dog?

02.01.2022 I have just launched my new podcast, Through a handlers eyes. I am going to be interviewing Assistance Dog handlers from all over Australia. The first episode... is just me introducing myself. I have lots of interesting people lined to talk to. Its available on Spotify now and will be on Apple podcasts as soon as it is approved. See more

01.01.2022 Hi there. I have a podcast where I interview Australian Assistance Dog handlers. We don’t talk about legislation or training methods, it’s just about the Journey of the handler and their dog. I’m looking for more people to interview. I would like a mix of men and women, with a variety of Assistance Dog types. I have only had women so far, so I would love to interview some men. Have a listen and if you would be interested in being a guest email me at [email protected] I can’t wait to hear from you. https://www.buzzsprout.com/1189091 See more
