22.01.2022 This young budding author in Year 1 really wants to write, and has a lot to share with us. She is in the pre-phonetic phase and is learning the common graphemes one at a time. I showed her how to use the Easy Spelling Aid app to say her sentence, and the app converts it to text- in the Queensland Font- for her to copy into her book. The video shows the difference in her writing without the app and with it. Notice the excellent vocabulary, correct spelling and neater handwriting. Plus the benefits of reading correct spelling when reading her story to her audience. What a wonderful way to support our young writers. Preventing error is also important because every time we write a word with the wrong spelling we are reinforcing that incorrect sequence of letters in our brain. The app is available for iOS and Android.

16.01.2022 Due to the restrictions in the US, many of the conferences have had to go to an online format. Great for us Aussie teachers who only occasionally get presenters... of this calibre in Australia. This conference with leading science of reading researchers Louisa Moats and David Kilpatrick is only 30 American dollars and will be recorded so you can watch it at a later stage. It will be worth every cent. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wasatch-reading-summit-spring- See more

16.01.2022 School holidays are here! They are a good time to take it easy and rest- but they are also a good opportunity to learn something new. Help your child master touch-typing. This has become an important life-skill, required for many jobs and is much easier to learn these days with excellent software programs. Nessy Fingers is suitable for those who need some games in the mix, otherwise, Touch Type Read Spell is the #1 program. See this page for more information: https://www.atapps.com.au/atcourses/touch-typing/

12.01.2022 App update: CLICKER DOCS. Unfortunately, Crick Software, the makers of Clicker Docs, will no longer be supporting the app Clicker Docs with the new iOS system that will be released later this year. They have amalgamated all of their apps (Clicker Docs, Clicker Sentences etc) into one app- Clicker Writer App, which will cost $398. This is very disappointing because it means their wonderful writing app will be out of reach for many families and schools. The two best alternativ...es are iWordQ UK (approx. $38) from Quillsoft or Ghotit Read Writer (approx. $105). These two do not have word banks and their interface is not as user-friendly for young students as CD was, but they have good quality text-prediction, good text-to-speech, spell check and homophone support. These are recommended as good alternatives to Clicker Docs at this time. Training is available in the use of these apps from ATapps. See more

07.01.2022 "One of the biggest benefits of using digital writing instruction is that it provides teachers with an opportunity to give differentiated assessments and personalized instruction through the use of varying levels of feedback for writers. It’s an opportunity to include one-on-one writing instruction to fit the individual needs of students, which is not always available through a more traditional method of writing instruction." https://www.edutopia.org//promoting-strong-writing-skills-
