24.01.2022 SAD NEWS ABOUT SONNY... Dear Friends, Hello - I'm Melinda (Mel), Sonny's wife. I'm very sorry to be sharing sad news about Sonny.... I recognise that this is a difficult time for many, and any friends who may be feeling overwhelmed by lifes challenges right now who want to avoid being exposed to distressing news, you may want to consider not reading this post further. In a state of shock and sadness, Im deeply sorry to be sharing the news that my husband, Sonny Chua, recently suffered a major stroke and has not survived. Sonnys sudden passing has left his family and close friends in a state of shock and grief. He was 52. We know that Sonny played an important part in so many lives, and was loved and respected by many. His legacy will continue to bring joy and passion to future generations and, on behalf of his loved ones, we thank you for your connection to Sonny and to our family. Im extremely grateful to have tremendous support from our families, friends and medical staff at St Vincent's Hospital, as we navigate our way through this time of mourning and adjustment. Sadly, due to COVID, we are only permitted to have a funeral with 10 attendees, involving only family - however, we will organise a celebration of his life and music, as soon as permitted. Vale Sonny Chua 2/11/67 - 9/9/20 With love, Melinda/Mel, girls, and the Chua & Ceresoli families. (Thank-you Monique xx)

24.01.2022 This is a reminder I put up on the wall by my teacher desk about 5 years ago when I was facing a really tough year with super difficult classes. I think it appl...ies this year too. Remember that these times are not normal. Were teaching though a pandemic. Our curriculum and pacing guides need to be secondary to connecting with students in meaningful ways. The student is more important than the standard! See more

20.01.2022 A few months ago, a singer in Tasmania had a wonderful idea, as his friends and singing colleagues around the country (and world!) went into lock-down to try an...d outsmart the current pandemic. The result of this kernel of inspiration is finally here today - a virtual performance of Thomas Tallis' epic 40 part motet, Spem in Alium, made by 40 Australian singers, in their lounge-rooms from across the country. This incredible collaboration has been directed and weaved together by the exceptionally talented and driven Nick Caddick and features singers from Australian ensembles including St Mary's Cathedral Choir, Sydney, The Song Company, Allegri Ensemble, Choir of St James' King Street, Sydney, Luminescence Chamber Singers, Pinchgut Opera,Adelaide Chamber Singers, and many others, some of whom met years ago singing together at Tallis Scholars Summer Schools, and have gone on to have music careers spanning continents. In Australia, the choral music world is small, but strong. And perhaps most importantly these singers are not just colleagues for this project - but friends, and lovers of a power that unites us across seas, across centuries - that is, beautiful choral music. We hope you enjoy this video, the singing and the glorious score, and can hear the passion resonate, in this strangest of times. With hearty congratulations to Nick, and credit to Brooke Shelley for her mix and Alex Wharton Abbey Road Studios for the mastering. Thanks for listening.

17.01.2022 Welcome to Music Education Alliance Victoria. We are working for you to create a unified voice for our sector. We've established a Board and Sub-Committees incl...uding Communications, Research and Risk Mitigation, meeting weekly to action a range of measures. Board reps have met with the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) and a DET representative to raise the importance of music, our concerns with the current restrictions and our willingness to work collaboratively to create workable solutions. Our views were very well received and we are now seeking a meeting with DHHS. The Risk Mitigation team has drafted a detailed plan for a phased, full return of music education. This will be presented to DHHS and DET. The Research team has compiled a wealth of international research, reports and papers on COVID-19 as it relates to music education. Board and Sub-Committee members are actively reaching out to parliamentarians on both sides to raise your concerns. Letters have been sent to Ministers of Health, Education and Arts, and the Chief Health Officer, offering our professional expertise as music educators and researchers to collaboratively create a roadmap back to full music participation. We look forward to keeping you up to date. Please invite your colleagues to like this page and share this post widely with your network.

15.01.2022 Wow... THIS LETTER. In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write a famous author and ask for advice. Kurt Vonnegut was the only one to respond ...- and his response is magnificent: Dear Xavier High School, and Ms. Lockwood, and Messrs Perin, McFeely, Batten, Maurer and Congiusta: I thank you for your friendly letters. You sure know how to cheer up a really old geezer (84) in his sunset years. I dont make public appearances any more because I now resemble nothing so much as an iguana. What I had to say to you, moreover, would not take long, to wit: Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out whats inside you, to make your soul grow. Seriously! I mean starting right now, do art and do it for the rest of your lives. Draw a funny or nice picture of Ms. Lockwood, and give it to her. Dance home after school, and sing in the shower and on and on. Make a face in your mashed potatoes. Pretend youre Count Dracula. Heres an assignment for tonight, and I hope Ms. Lockwood will flunk you if you dont do it: Write a six line poem, about anything, but rhymed. No fair tennis without a net. Make it as good as you possibly can. But dont tell anybody what youre doing. Dont show it or recite it to anybody, not even your girlfriend or parents or whatever, or Ms. Lockwood. OK? Tear it up into teeny-weeny pieces, and discard them into widely separated trash recepticals. You will find that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your poem. You have experienced becoming, learned a lot more about whats inside you, and you have made your soul grow. God bless you all! Kurt Vonnegut

13.01.2022 Just a quick peek from the actual window into my room. I know I could put up curtains or blinds but I like leaving it open so people can see in and experience ...what we’re doing. Makes me think of that interview question If someone looked into your room during a typical class, what would they see. I also like propping up current books in the window so that kids can exclaim we read that in class! as they walk by. The books change, the things that happen in the room change, but the window remains open! See more

10.01.2022 Sonny Chua (1967 - 2020) Pianist, arranger, composer and music educator, Sonny Chua, died suddenly and prematurely from a stroke on 9 September 2020. He was 52. Sonny was born in Penang, Malaysia. During Sonnys childhood, his father introduced him to classical music through his extensive record collection. He also bought his son scores in a range of musical genres, feeding Sonnys musical interest. Even in these early years, while learning piano in Malacca, Sonny would re-ar...Continue reading
